Concussion Suit, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It was just a bit over a week before the start of the regular season of the National Football League when a settlement was announced in the much anticipated concussion law suit brought by and on behalf of more than 4000 retired NFL players. The number represents about one-third of all retired NFL players.

Communicated Perspective-Taking During Stories Of Marital Stress: Spouses’ Perceptions Of One Another’S Perspective-Taking Behaviors, Jody Koenig Kellas, Erin K. Willer, April R. Trees Sep 2013

Communicated Perspective-Taking During Stories Of Marital Stress: Spouses’ Perceptions Of One Another’S Perspective-Taking Behaviors, Jody Koenig Kellas, Erin K. Willer, April R. Trees

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Perspective-taking has important connections to social and relational functioning, making it an important skill for marital adjustment (Long & Andrews, 1990). The current study investigated the types of behaviors indicative of communicated perspective-taking from the participant perspective as couples told stories of stressful relational events. Using a stimulated recall procedure, 68 husband and wife pairs jointly told the story of a stressful relational experience and then separately viewed their videotaped interaction and evaluated their spouses’ perspective-taking behaviors. Agreement, attentiveness, relevant contributions, coordination, positive tone, and freedom represented the categories of behaviors spouses judged to reflect …

Taking The ‘Local’ Out Of Local News: Implications For An Informed Public, Lee Hood Sep 2013

Taking The ‘Local’ Out Of Local News: Implications For An Informed Public, Lee Hood

School of Communication: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The meaning of “local” in TV news is not as straightforward as one might imagine. “Local” newscasts in several U.S. markets are outsourced to an independent company located hundreds of miles from the communities served. What are the implications of such a delivery system for coverage of local issues and the Jeffersonian ideal of an informed citizenry? This study employs a content analysis of outsourced and local newscasts, using a data set of more than 1,000 stories from more than 30 hours of newscasts to determine if differences exist on story topics and source types. Does one type of station …

Generative Models For Item Adoptions Using Social Correlation, Freddy Chong Tat Chua, Hady Wirawan Lauw, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Users face many choices on the Web when it comes to choosing which product to buy, which video to watch, etc. In making adoption decisions, users rely not only on their own preferences, but also on friends. We call the latter social correlation which may be caused by the homophily and social influence effects. In this paper, we focus on modeling social correlation on users’ item adoptions. Given a user-user social graph and an item-user adoption graph, our research seeks to answer the following questions: whether the items adopted by a user correlate to items adopted by her friends, and …

Variance In Patient Access To Support Persons By Race/Ethnicity And Language Preference: An Analysis Of Patient Survey Data, Andrew J. Jager, Matthew K. Wynia

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Regulatory and accreditation organizations have advocated open visitation policies and allowance of support persons of patients’ choosing, but it is unknown if support is allowed equitably. Data from hospitalized patients were analyzed to determine access to support persons, stratified by patient-reported race/ethnicity, language, sex, age, and education. A multivariate regression model was constructed using race and language, controlling for site and patient sex, education and age. Additionally, sites’ policies explicitly allowing support persons were correlated to reports of allowance of support persons. Among 1,196 respondents, 17% reported not being allowed a support person or being unsure. African American patients had …

Beyond The Yellow Brick Road: Queer Localization In The Age Of Anita Bryant, 1974-1980, Stewart John Van Cleve

Dissertations and Theses

Collective memories of gay rights in the late 1970s offer a conflicted portrait of Anita Bryant, an infamous anti-gay personality who inspired, organized, or funded four anti-gay referendums between 1976 and 1978. I employ J. Jack Halberstam's concept of "metronormativity" in an analysis of campaigns that failed to preserve local gay rights laws in Miami and Eugene, the first and last of Bryant's four "target cities." I use L. Frank Baum's Wizard of Oz as a metaphor to compare the beginning of Bryant's role as a leader in Miami to her subsequent role as a specter of national controversy in …

Theses and Dissertations

From 2012-2013 a mortuary analysis of Oakland-Fraternal cemeteries in Little Rock, Arkansas was conducted for this thesis. Evidence that this cemetery serves as a cultural database for the city of Little Rock and that resources like this should be preserved as Cultural Resource Management projects are presented in an interdisciplinary approach to mortuary analysis combining the disciplines of Anthropology and Rhetoric. Analysis Of Belarusian Media In 2011: Discourse, Argument Construction, And Propaganda Framing, Tatsiana Karaliova

Theses and Dissertations

The mass media system in Belarus is characterized by the coexistence of two types of mass media - state-run and independent. This study looks at the difference in characteristics of coverage in these two types of media outlets in terms of diversity of perspectives, argument construction, and propaganda framing. A significant difference in the nature of discourse on the major events in Belarus in 2011 in state-run and independent media exposed their distinct ideological viewpoints. State-run media favored a pro-government perspective and widely presented anti-opposition and anti-revolutionary opinion. Lack of plurality and rational arguments, anti-globalization and Soviet nostalgia rhetoric were …

The Drug Facts Box: Improving The Communication Of Prescription Drug Information, Lisa M. Schwartz, Steven Woloshin Aug 2013

The Drug Facts Box: Improving The Communication Of Prescription Drug Information, Lisa M. Schwartz, Steven Woloshin

Dartmouth Scholarship

Communication about prescription drugs ought to be a paragon of public science communication. Unfortunately, it is not. Consumers see $4 billion of direct-to-consumer advertising annually, which typically fails to present data about how well drugs work. The professional label—the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) mechanism to get physicians information needed for appropriate prescribing—may also fail to present benefit data. FDA labeling guidance, in fact, suggests that industry omit bene

The issue of medical marijuana is a highly political issue within today's media coverage. At the core of the debate, is the nature of state's rights issues versus federal law supremacy. But most people don't know there was a time when medical marijuana was legal and openly used by pharmacists and doctors to treat various medical conditions. This documentary will explore the medical marijuana debate from a historical perspective of how the Federal Bureau of Narcotics changed the laws and public perception of a once widely used medical treatment during the 1930s. Outsized Profit Expectations Harm Education News, Richard E. Day Aug 2013

Outsized Profit Expectations Harm Education News, Richard E. Day

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

It appears that former Herald-Leader and Los Angeles Times editor John Carroll was on to something when he predicted, in 2006, that outsized profit expectations in the newspaper industry would have a destructive effect on journalism. Seven years and several rounds of newsroom layoffs later — all in the service of maximized profits — its effects can be seen in education reporting on the [pages of the Herald-Leader].
