Flag Waving As Visual Argument: 2006 Immigration Demonstrations And Cultural Citizenship, Richard Pineda
Flag Waving As Visual Argument: 2006 Immigration Demonstrations And Cultural Citizenship, Richard Pineda
Selected Works Temporary Series
During the 2006 immigration rallies and demonstrations, hundreds of thousands of immigrants and their supporters tumed out to protest proposed immigration legislation. Flag waving was a key element of these demonstrations, in which participants employed both the U.S. flag and other national flags, most prominently Mexican flags. In this essay, we examine how flag waving functions as a visual argument that offers possibilities for establishing cultural and national citizenship and creating a visual form of refutation. Specifically, we argue that anti-immigration advocates see foreign flags as visual ideographs that represent recent immigrants' failure to assimilate, immigrants' deviant cultural practices, and …
Millennial Pre-Camp Staff Training: Incorporating Generational Knowledge, Learning Strategies And Compliance Gaining Techniques, Dana Robin Magilen
Millennial Pre-Camp Staff Training: Incorporating Generational Knowledge, Learning Strategies And Compliance Gaining Techniques, Dana Robin Magilen
Theses Digitization Project
A new generation, Millennial Generation, is currently staffing summer camp programs. Camp directors need to be aware of the differences in learning styles this generation prefers. The Millennial generation is the first to grow up with the instant accessibility of the Internet. This project was created based on suggestions from Camp Directors and ideas that have been developed from the study of this generation. A pre-camp video game training script has been created and tailored to the Millennial camp staff in order to encourage Millennials to learn and use the information needed to take proper care of campers.

The Mad Rhetoric: Toward A Rigor On Radical Creativity And Its Function In Consciousness As A Communicative Principle, Eugene David Hetzel
The Mad Rhetoric: Toward A Rigor On Radical Creativity And Its Function In Consciousness As A Communicative Principle, Eugene David Hetzel
Theses Digitization Project
This thesis explores three creative works, "The music of Erich Zann" by H.P. Lovecraft; the film "Eraserhead" by David Lynch; and the "Self-Portrait (blue)" by Vincent Van Gogh, as examples of different forms of mad rhetorics as a way in which to demonstrate the application of the theory of "mad rhetorics" and the role "radical creativity" plays in the construction of mad rhetorics by "mad rhetors" play in society.

Rules Of Interchange: Privacy In Online Social Communities– A Rhetorical Critique Of Myspace.Com, Adam W. Tyma
Rules Of Interchange: Privacy In Online Social Communities– A Rhetorical Critique Of Myspace.Com, Adam W. Tyma
Communication Faculty Publications
As online social communities (e.g. MySpace, Facebook) grow in popularity and become commonplace, these same communities also become sites of information exchange through various communication channels (eg. text, visual, aural). With these exchanges occurring either individually or collectively, sets of questions arise regarding the community, the value of information within that community, and how/what/why they choose to communicate what they do within such a space. By applying Sandra Petronio’s Communication Privacy Management theory and Michel Foucault’s discussion of the Panopticon, a rhetorical critique of user decisions regarding private information within Myspace.Com can be conducted. The knowledge uncovered adds insight into …

Learning To Model Spatial Dependency: Semi-Supervised Discriminative Random Fields, Chi-Hoon Lee, Shaojun Wang, Feng Jiao, Dale Schuurmans, Russell Greiner
Kno.e.sis Publications
We present a novel, semi-supervised approach to training discriminative random fields (DRFs) that efficiently exploits labeled and unlabeled training data to achieve improved accuracy in a variety of image processing tasks. We formulate DRF training as a form of MAP estimation that combines conditional loglikelihood on labeled data, given a data-dependent prior, with a conditional entropy regularizer defined on unlabeled data. Although the training objective is no longer concave, we develop an efficient local optimization procedure that produces classifiers that are more accurate than ones based on standard supervised DRF training. We then apply our semi-supervised approach to train DRFs …

Professional Knowledge, Professional Education And Journalism, Nora French
Conference Papers
This paper discusses general concepts and issues underlying the education of journalists. Categorising journalism education as professional education, it seeks to explore the notion of professional education, and in particular, professional knowledge, referring to the work of Schön and Eraut to define the type of knowledge required in professional practice. The curricular models associated with professional education are discussed and compared with the forms of curriculum commonly found in journalism education.

Beyond Sawsdl - A Game Plan For Broader Adoption Of Semantic Web Services, Amit P. Sheth
Beyond Sawsdl - A Game Plan For Broader Adoption Of Semantic Web Services, Amit P. Sheth
Kno.e.sis Publications
After a flurry of research activities led by the OWL-S, WSMO, SWSF, and WSDL-S groups, we now have taken the first concrete steps toward building a Semantic Web Services (SWS) based solution, in the form of a W3C candidate recommendation SAWSDL [http://www.w3.org/2002/ws/sawsdl/], associated tools and use cases, and initial applications [1]. Where do we go from here? Researchers among us may be fully convinced of the importance and benefit of adding semantics to Web services and impatient to see their research translated into technologies and adapted for real use. However, I believe we may need to be patient and do …

A Unified Approach To Retrieving Web Documents And Semantic Web Data, Trivikram Immaneni, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan
Kno.e.sis Publications
The Semantic Web seems to be evolving into a property-linked web of RDF data, conceptually divorced from (but physically housed in) the hyperlinked web of HTML documents. We discuss the Unified Web model that integrates the two webs and formalizes the structure and the semantics of interconnections between them. We also discuss the Hybrid Query Language which combines the Data and Information Retrieval techniques to provide a convenient and uniform way to retrieve data and documents from the Unified Web. We present the retrieval system SITAR and some preliminary results.

Seeking Social Support Among Female Graduate Teaching Assistants, Lisa M. Theisen, Robert A. Davilla
Seeking Social Support Among Female Graduate Teaching Assistants, Lisa M. Theisen, Robert A. Davilla
Basic Communication Course Annual
This study investigated how female graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) develop social support and the influence that these relationships have on their academic, teaching, and social lives. In-depth interviews were conducted with seven female GTAs in a Communication Studies master’s degree program at a large southern university. Results revealed that participants formed closer, more personal relationships with other graduate students, specifically other GTAs, and that these relationships influenced their academic lives, including teaching. Participants formed meaningful but more formal relationships with faculty. Relationships with faculty had little influence on their teaching but influenced their graduate coursework and post-graduate plans.

Televising 9/11 And Its Aftermath: The Framing Of George W. Bush’S Faith-Based Politics Of Good And Evil, Gary Edgerton
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
For most of the four days following 9/11, TV viewers around the world were mesmerised by unthinkable images. Television brought home to Americans especially the polarising effects of the post-Cold War world, including the backlash of Islamic fundamentalism and the imminent threat of future terrorist attacks. A formulaic narrative quickly emerged; ordinary police and firefighters took the lead as America’s national heroes, while Osama bin Laden and the rest of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rose up as villains. On September 12, 2001, U.S. President George W. Bush gave voice to this mythic small-screen storyline as “a monumental struggle of good …

Increasingly, social capital, defined as shared norms, trust, and the horizontal and vertical social networks that facilitate coordination and cooperation for mutually beneficial collective action, is seen as an important asset upon which people rely to manage natural resources and resolve conflicts. This paper uses empirical data from households and community surveys and case studies, to examine the role, strengths, and limits of social capital in managing conflicts over the use and management of natural resources. We inventoried over 700 cases ranging from conflicts between multiple resource users to supra-community conflicts between local communities concerns for better livelihoods and national/international …
