Editors’ Note: Simile Progress Report, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt

Communication Faculty Publications

As Studies in Media & Information Literacy Education (SIMILE) enters its sixth year of publication, the coeditors have identified a number of issues to be addressed in the journal’s development. This editors’ note explores how the field of media and information literacy education has grown in importance. There continues to be a need for both theory-building and empirical research data, which would strengthen conceptualization. SIMILE needs to cultivate a global sense of significance about media and information literacy education issues across many disciplines.

Creating Persuasive Messages Advocating Organ Donation, Keith Weber, Matthew M. Martin, Members Of Comm 401, Michael W. Corrigan

Elementary & Secondary Education Faculty Research

Most people state that they would be willing to be organ donors, however only a small percentage of the population has actually signed an organ donor card. These studies focused on persuasive messages that encourage people to sign organ donor cards. In the first study, people reported their attitudes and knowledge involving organ donation. Results indicated that donor card signing was related to overall knowledge about donation. When only considering those people with positive attitudes toward organ donation, their overall knowledge about donation explained their willingness to sign organ donor cards. In the second study, people read a message involving …

Curiosity, Courage Keys To Diverse Journalism, Carla Kimbrough Feb 2006

Curiosity, Courage Keys To Diverse Journalism, Carla Kimbrough

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Curiosity and courage, I said, are essential characteristics for being a great journalist and producing great journalism.
That comment apparently struck two aspiring journalists because they approached me following a recent panel discussion about diversity at Colorado State University. They wanted more.
Curiosity, I explained, allows journalists to ponder the reality of the world around them. By putting aside assumptions of knowing how life is, great journalists can spark their desires to learn or know more about people and their circumstances.
Courage enables journalists to ask about all the things they are curious about without fear. Or, to borrow somewhat …

“You’Re My Parent But You’Re Not”: Dialectical Tensions In Stepchildren’S Perceptions About Communicating With The Nonresidential Parent, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Leslie A. Baxter Feb 2006

“You’Re My Parent But You’Re Not”: Dialectical Tensions In Stepchildren’S Perceptions About Communicating With The Nonresidential Parent, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Leslie A. Baxter

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

The nonresidential parent plays a role in the lives of stepchildren and in stepfamily households. The focus of the present study was on the interaction between the nonresidential parent and his/her child who resides as part of a stepfamily household. Grounded in relational dialectics theory, the researchers performed an interpretive analysis of 50 transcribed interviews with college-aged stepchildren. Stepchildren’s perceptions of communication with the nonresidential parent were animated by two contradictions: parenting/nonparenting and openness/closedness. These two contradictions form a totality, interwoven with one another. The parenting/nonparenting contradiction reflected stepchildren’s ambivalence over parenting attempts of nonresidential parents. Stepchildren wanted nonresidential parent …

This thesis has a multi disciplinary approach. It integrates the study of virtual communities and media convergence research with a broader social milieu that is represented in two levels of research the micro level and the macro one. Among the significances of this thesis, is that it is considered to be the first academic investigation in the Arab World that tackles this theme of research.

Furthermore, the researcher triangulates both a quantitative and qualitative methods as the methodological framework for the thesis. The main research sample consists of 500 Egyptian youth, who are members of virtual communities.

Besides, while the …

Fighting Terrorism In An Electronic Age: Does The Patriot Act Unduly Compromise Our Civil Liberties?, Christopher P. Raab

Duke Law & Technology Review

The USA PATRIOT Act is tremendously controversial, both lauded by law enforcement and decried by civil liberties groups. This iBrief considers two of the Act's communications monitoring provisions, concluding that each compromises civil liberties to a greater degree than is necessary to combat terrorism. Accordingly, Congress should revise the USA PATRIOT Act, bringing it into line with the Constitution.

On Sport and Society

I think it was Wednesday. I was cruising the channels when suddenly I was brought to a complete stop by what I saw. There it was, live, football practice for the Senior Bowl. I have seen a lot of dreadful non-events on ESPN through the years, but this one represented a new low. Cheerleading competitions are considerably more interesting, and indeed more significant.
