Horn-SHIQ has been identified as a fragment of the description logic SHIQ for which inferencing is in PT_IME with respect to the size of the ABox. This enables reasoning with larger ABoxes in situations where the TBox is static, and represents one approach towards tractable description logic reasoning. In this paper, we show that reasoning in Horn-SHIQ, in spite of its low datacomplexity, is E_xpT_IME-hard with respect to the overall size of the knowledge base. A Framework For Schema-Driven Relationship Discovery From Unstructured Text, Cartic Ramakrishnan, Krzysztof Kochut, Amit P. Sheth

We address the issue of extracting implicit and explicit relationships between entities in biomedical text. We argue that entities seldom occur in text in their simple form and that relationships in text relate the modified, complex forms of entities with each other. We present a rule-based method for (1) extraction of such complex entities and (2) relationships between them and (3) the conversion of such relationships into RDF. Furthermore, we present results that clearly demonstrate the utility of the generated RDF in discovering knowledge from text corpora by means of locating paths composed of the extracted relationships.

Lean manufacturing has certainly been a hot topic lately for flexo printers and converters. It is rare to attend a conference or look through a trade magazine without seeing the subject as a central focus. Lean seems mysterious, almost Zen-like, partly because we use Japanese terms like muda, kanban, and kaizen instead of just using English translations. For many, we are just getting familiar with the concepts of Lean. Waste identification and reduction are certainly primary themes. Cèsar Chàvez's Rhetorical Use Of Religious Symbols, Joseph Zompetti

Cèsar Chàvez's has been studied and praised as one of the twentieth century's greatest orators. One of his strengths as a rhetor, however, has consistently been overlooked—his use of religious themes and images to identify and reach-out to his audience. This paper analyzes several speeches by Chavez to understand how he used religious themes and images. We find that the religious elements in Chàvez's rhetoric signify the use of particular strategies as well as how he embodied religious themes and principles in his everyday life

The Soul Of Politics: The Reverend Jim Wallis's Attempt To Transcend The Religious/Secular Left And The Religious Right, Bohn David Lattin, Stephen Underhill

Preacher and social activist Jim Wallis has written and spoke out against what he identified as the polarizing effects between the Religious/Secular Left and the Religious Right. His first hook The Soul of Politics: A Practical and Prophetic Vision for Change (1995) reveals Wallis's attempt to create a rhetorical vision that transcends the polarizing political ideologies of the Left and Right. An analysis of Wallis's rhetoric reveals that while his rhetorical goal was laudable the message, built in the form of a jeremiad, lacked consistency and failed to transcend the Frames of Acceptance of both the Left and the Right.

Logic programming has always been a major ontology modeling paradigm, and is frequently being used in large research projects and industrial applications, e.g., by means of the F-Logic reasoning engine OntoBroker or the TRIPLE query, inference, and transformation language and system. At the same time, the Web Ontology Language OWL has been recommended by the W3C for modeling ontologies for the Web. Naturally, it is desirable to investigate the interoperability between both paradigms. In this paper, we do so by studying an expressive fragment of OWL DL for which reasoning can be reduced to the evaluation of Horn logic programs. …

Compulsive Talkers: Perceptions Of Over Talkers Within The Workplace, Jason R. Axsom

Compulsive talkers have been the focus o f limited communication studies, and those that have been written addressed the need for defining and identifying those considered to be over communicators. To date, no recorded studies has investigated the potentially negative impact compulsive talkers could have on those that work with them. The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions and reactions of interactants with compulsive talkers in the workplace. Interviews with coworkers of compulsive talkers were conducted to determine their perceptions of these over talkers and their attributes. From these interviews, four distinct patterns emerged. Late nineteenth century modernity forced reformers in Great Britain and the United States to embrace a new sense of immediacy in their strategies. These new strategies, however, rarely extended to black people who were often subject to violence and discrimination in the period of high imperialism. Instead, when most reformers discussed the problems black people faced all they could offer were traditional promises of religious-based protections or “uplift.” The violence of lynching in the 1890s forced reformers to address the problems of white supremacy in a direct fashion, while promoting an understanding of the connection between the plight of African …

In recent years, the product placement industry has seen a significant boom. The growth of product placement continues as media seeks funding and branded products vie for increased audience attention. Because of the increased product placement, there are many studies that examine the attitudes towards product placement, the experiences and interpretations of brands post-product placement, the effects of product placement, and memory of product placement.
