Public Opinion, The Media, And Environmental Policy: Agenda-Setting, Framing, And Maintaining The Status Quo, Jonela Rae Estes May 2005

Public Opinion, The Media, And Environmental Policy: Agenda-Setting, Framing, And Maintaining The Status Quo, Jonela Rae Estes

Dissertations and Theses

Contributing to the research on the topic of the media, public opinion, and public policy, this research investigated the question: Given the environment's relatively bipartisan backing and the public's support for a stronger environmental protection agenda, how can an environmental policy direction apparently incongruent with public opinion be maintained?

The method of answering this larger question was to examine the dynamic among public opinion, the media, and environmental policy, focusing specifically on the media's agenda-setting and framing functions. This dynamic was explored through a three part methodology: by looking at the amounts of environmental policy media coverage over the last …

Presence And Image Quality: The Case Of High-Definition Television, Cheryl C. Bracken May 2005

Presence And Image Quality: The Case Of High-Definition Television, Cheryl C. Bracken

Communication Faculty Publications

Previous research has demonstrated that form variables can increase television viewers' sense of presence. The current broadcasting of high-definition television (HDTV) programming makes testing this relation between form and presence possible in a new context, image quality. In this experiment, television viewers watched either HDTV or standard-definition television images and then rated their viewing experience on a pencil-and-paper questionnaire. The results demonstrate that HDTV provided viewers with a greater sense of presence than the current standard, thus providing empirical evidence for the claim that improved image quality will lead to television viewers' experiencing presence. Additionally, the results suggest that with …

The Adventures And Challenges Of Teaching Overseas, Bonnie Garson

Organization Management Journal

As business professors become more immersed in global strategies, knowledge of foreign cultures and stereotypes will help further thinking and debate. This article explores the impact of culture on the process of adapting to living in a foreign country and teaching business principles in a Muslim society. Additionally, the report hopes to continue the discussion regarding the portability of American theories to foreign countries.

Spirituality: A Way To Alternate Subjectivity?, Mihaela Kelemen, Tuomo Peltonen

Organization Management Journal

This paper emphasizes the contribution of Michel Foucault and Pierre Hadot to discussions of workplace spirituality. It is argued that their understanding of spirituality differs significantly from the mainstream management contributions: they view spirituality as a distinct form of post-modern subjectivity in organizations and regard the subject as continuous flow emerging and being constructed not so much at the crossroad of institutions and macro-structures but from within, with the help of self-formation practices. We term the latter spirituality and argue, firstly, that there are strong (albeit controversial) connections between spiritual practices, the history of Christianity, and the philosophy of antiquity. …

Backwoods Brewing Company: Learning To Tolerate Ambiguity, Elizabeth Mccrea, Elizabeth A. Cooper, Kristin Backhaus

Organization Management Journal

Backwoods Brewing Company is an experiential exercise that provides a challenging, reality based business situation, requiring students to create a conclusion based on limited information. It is designed primarily for upper-division management students. A tolerance for ambiguity scale is administered, the debriefing of the exercise helps students develop a better understanding of their tolerance for ambiguity and teaches them some concrete tools to be used when dealing with ambiguity.

Should Critical Management Studies And Organization Development Collaborate? Invitation To A Contemplation, Maxim Voronov May 2005

Should Critical Management Studies And Organization Development Collaborate? Invitation To A Contemplation, Maxim Voronov

Organization Management Journal

In this article, the author argues that despite important differences between Critical Management Studies (CMS) and Organization Development (OD), there is enough common ground to make a dialogue worthwhile for both fields and for management practice. The author outlines some major "objectives" of each field, noting some important but frequently overlooked similarities and complementarities between them. Power and empowerment are offered as examples of focal topics around which the two disciplines could have a productive discussion, suggesting that such an exchange would help CMS’ important insights about power to have more of an impact on organizational practice while enhancing OD's …

Lasting Impressions: Parental Persuasion And Its Permanence In A Child's Development, Kelcey Newton May 2005

Lasting Impressions: Parental Persuasion And Its Permanence In A Child's Development, Kelcey Newton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The questions of parents are never fully answered due to the plethora of factors involved in raising children. However, a different angle of research has uncovered some new techniques that provide renewed hope for the longevity of parental impact. Many people understand that parents—and people in general—use and are daily impacted by persuasion. This research shows that if parents can more completely understand positive persuasive tactics, their values can potentially follow children from the bubble of the home to their adulthood. An important component of this parental persuasion is the use of inoculation techniques to help children not only live …

"When The President Says 'Democracy'": Examining The Relationship Between Presidential Discourse And Democritizatsiia In Kazakhstan, Elena Pak May 2005

"When The President Says 'Democracy'": Examining The Relationship Between Presidential Discourse And Democritizatsiia In Kazakhstan, Elena Pak

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Many expected that the fall of Soviet communism would result in the democratization of its successor states. The majority of the post-Soviet republics announced democracy as their new way of development; however, very few have evolved into democratization processes. Kazakhstan's democratization has resulted in the formation of authoritative presidentialism, though with limited liberalization (Cummings, 2002, p. 9). Kazakhstan has neither established the anomalous democracy as its most influential neighbor in Eastern Europe, Russia, nor has become the extreme sultanism like its Central Asian fellow, Turkmenistan. According to Cummings (2002), Kazakhstan has shaped "a hybrid, transitional regime of part-authoritarianism" (p. 5). …

Confessions Of Journalism's Old Gray Lady: Deceptive Reporting At The New York Times, Jace Lux May 2005

Confessions Of Journalism's Old Gray Lady: Deceptive Reporting At The New York Times, Jace Lux

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In May of 2003 one of the most respected periodicals on the planet, The New York Times, ran a front page 14,000 word apology in the Sunday Times, for fallacious reporting conducted by Jayson Blair. In his four year tenure at the Times, Blair falsified sources, lied about conducting interviews, and erroneously reported on important details of some of the nation's top stories. After a widespread investigation into Blair's stories by other Times reporters, journalism's old grey lady was forced to face the public and provide them with answers, an explanation, and an apology for this breach of trust. This …

An Ontological Approach To The Document Access Problem Of Insider Threat, Boanerges Aleman-Meza, Phillip Burns, Matthew Eavenson, Devanand Palanswami, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Verification of legitimate access of documents, which is one aspect of the umbrella of problems in the Insider Threat category, is a challenging problem. This paper describes the research and prototyping of a system that takes an ontological approach, and is primarily targeted for use by theintelligence community. Our approach utilizes the notion of semantic associations and their discovery among a collection of heterogeneous documents. We highlight our contributions in (graphically) capturing the scope of the investigation assignment of an intelligence analyst by referring to classes and relationships of an ontology; in computing a measure of the relevance …

Glycomics is one of the many research efforts currently underway in the biosciences domain, which is characterized by high throughput data generated at multiple experimental stages. For example, analysis of N-glycosylation encompasses stages from cell-culture to peptide identification and quantification. Research groups across the world use diverse cell cultures, separation and spectroscopic techniques, and data identification, correlation and integration methodologies. Thus, data generated at different phases of the process by multiple groups are both structurally and functionally heterogeneous.
