Three Steps To Landing Your First Journalism Job, Carla Kimbrough Jul 2005

Three Steps To Landing Your First Journalism Job, Carla Kimbrough

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Four. Five. Maybe even Six. The number of years it took to earn your ticket to the big time.
You've donned your cap and gown and celebrated. Now, it's time to take life more seriously. Your parents warn you that soon you will be responsible for your own livelihood. Student (loan lenders remind you that you have only six months before you'll pay the piper.
You decide it's best to start applying for jobs. You apply to the places you've always wanted to live or the papers you read about during school. You hear nothing, or at least nothing encouraging. …

Social Network Discovery By Mining Spatio-Temporal Events, Hady Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Hwee Hwa Pang, Teck-Tim Tan Jul 2005

Social Network Discovery By Mining Spatio-Temporal Events, Hady Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Hwee Hwa Pang, Teck-Tim Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Knowing patterns of relationship in a social network is very useful for law enforcement agencies to investigate collaborations among criminals, for businesses to exploit relationships to sell products, or for individuals who wish to network with others. After all, it is not just what you know, but also whom you know, that matters. However, finding out who is related to whom on a large scale is a complex problem. Asking every single individual would be impractical, given the huge number of individuals and the changing dynamics of relationships. Recent advancement in technology has allowed more data about activities of individuals …

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this study were (a) to discover ethical dilemmas faced in the media and how they affect society; and (b) to determine what new ethical principles need to be established for media to gain back trust from today's society. Book Review: Breaking Into Baseball, Scott D. Peterson Jun 2005

Book Review: Breaking Into Baseball, Scott D. Peterson

Communication Faculty Publications

Ardell's book might very well be subtitled “The Seven Faces of Eve” as she argues for goddess worship theories for baseball's origins and then organizes the rest of the chapters around the seven ways in which women can interact with the game of baseball: as fans (both in and out of the stands), as players (both amateur and professional), as umpires, owners, and members of the media. Baseball's gender barrier (a first cousin to the game's now obsolete color barrier) provides a consistent and compelling undertone to the book as so many of the women that Ardell writes about (perhaps …

Annika Sorenstam, Richard C. Crepeau Jun 2005

Annika Sorenstam, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

There is a philosophical puzzle that poses the question, if a tree falls in the forest and there is no one there to hear it, does it make a noise? Although it is not quite the same thing, that line did come to mind last weekend as Annika Sorenstam waltzed to victory in the second major of the year. In fact, Sorenstam has been waltzing all over everybody, everything, and everywhere in the last few years on the LPGA tour. Over the past few months, she has been torrid, and last weekend she moved halfway towards her goal of winning …

Having accrued most of the power in baseball unto himself over the past several years, "Bud" has shown, at times, some insight and leadership only ultimately to disappoint.

Web Service Semantics - Wsdl-S, Rama Akkiraju, Joel Farrell, John A. Miller, Meenakshi Nagarajan, Amit P. Sheth, Kunal Verma

Kno.e.sis Publications

Web services have primarily been designed for providing inter-operability between business applications. Current technologies assume a large amount of human interaction, for integrating two applications. This is primarily due to the fact that business process integration requires understanding of data and functions of the involved entities. Semantic Web technologies, powered by description logic based languages like OWL[1], aim to add greater meaning to Web content, by annotating the data with ontologies. Ontologies provide a mechanism of providing shared conceptualizations of domains. This allows agents to get an understanding of users’ Web content and greatly reduces human interaction for meaningful Web …

In Memory Of George Mikan, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

He made the number 99 on his jersey famous decades before Wayne Gretzky wore it on his hockey sweater. George Mikan, the 6'10" center of the Minneapolis Lakers died on Thursday at the age of 80. He was the first big man in professional basketball, the first in college basketball, and he was a key reason the NBA succeeded when other leagues had failed. Leonard Koppett in his history of the NBA called the first eight years of league existence the "The Mikan Era." That is certainly how I remember those years as a boy in Minneapolis.

Certainly, the House of Representatives' hearings on steroids come to mind in this context.

Reaching Critical Mass In Nigeria's Telephone Industry, Chukwuka Onwumechili Jun 2005

Reaching Critical Mass In Nigeria's Telephone Industry, Chukwuka Onwumechili

Department of Strategic, Legal, and Management Communications Faculty Publications

The sudden and rapid growth in access to telephones in Nigeria has certainly raised major questions for telecommunications scholars. Access to telephones in Nigeria had been marginal by the end of the twentieth century with the teledensity rate well below 1:100 for a country of estimated 130 million persons (Ajayi, Salawu and Raji 1999). Today, over 10 million Nigerians have access, improving the teledensity to 13:100 in barely five years! Growth rates are cur- rently over 100 percent per year. What happened? How was the industry turned around? Has critical mass been reached? Has the rate of growth become self- …
