While it is important for teachers of religion to consider how television portrays marriage, it may be even more important to consider how we use television and how we help people engage the media with critical perception. People of faith need to do a cultural intervention, providing a deep and sustaining vision of what marriage can be over time and in connection with community.

Therefore, these organizations must learn about and utilize less expensive techniques to increase awareness and gain support for their institutions and ideas. The present thesis project has been created to help managers and personnel of nonprofit organizations gain a better understanding of those promotional tools and public relations activities most accessible to them.

Indigenous identity can only be located within . a framework of historical dislocation from where white notions of assimilation are shattered. Therefore Indigeneity can only be defined in relation to the black experience within colonialism's hegemonic structures. I will argue this by looking at constructions of Indigenous Australians in the feature film Radiance (1998) directed by Rachel Perkins, and the documentary Sissy (2000) directed by Debbie Carmody (previously known as Debbie Gittins), which was made as part of this thesis. The events of September 11th, the volatility of the stock market, and the reactions of the American people to these events show a real change in the cultural atmosphere. Undergraduate students enrolled in three sections of a basic speech course over a period of three semesters were surveyed regarding their evaluations of the video streaming of their speeches on the Internet as a method of feedback. Streaming video refers to motion video with accompanying audio that is delivered live or asynchronously and is available at the click of a mouse on a website. By adopting an ethnomethodological approach to the analysis of focus group interviews with undergraduate students enrolled in and teachers of the introductory course in speech communication, this essay demonstrates that we understand to be a stable, objective aspect of reality--i.e., the inevitability of educational failure--is in fact a human accomplishment, the result of concerted, through unreflective, social action. This paper explores the ways in which students' and graduate teaching assistants' espousal of educational rituals may create and sustain their (or their students') risk of educational failure. This essay sketches out the complications of a performative pedagogy in the context of a basic communication course, specifically examining how the course negotiates and constitutes what communication scholars have called "educational risk." To do this, a collage of narratives are provided--a series of images which, when seen in totality, might generate a conversation about how communication studies could address the intersections of risk, critical performative pedagogy, and the classrooms of our basic communication courses. This study examines the impact of high school public speaking skills training and public speaking experiences on college overall communication apprehension (CA) and public speaking context CA. The results show that public speaking skill-training in high school is significantly related to lower CA levels or students upon entering a college-level basic speech course. In addition, students who report more public speaking experiences both in high school setting and outside the high school setting, tend to report lower overall CA and lower CA in the public speaking context.

For this paper the author researched Iowa's immigration history and modern day Postville, a small town that represents a tossed salad of cultural, religious, and linguistic diversities. The author analyzed the current effect of immigration as well as the process of integration and assimilation into the small town through the eyes of its immigrants. The major emphasis is placed on Postville located in northeast Iowa. For 150 years Postville was an all-white, all-Christian farming community of 1,000 souls, most of European ancestry. During the Spring 2001 semester I had the opportunity to conduct an ethnography of Dr. Karen Mitchell's course "Texts and Contexts: Performance and Social Change" at the University of Northern Iowa. This course is designed to link performance with social change issues, by utilizing personal narrative and Augusto Boal' s Theatre of the Oppressed techniques: forum theatre, image theatre, and invisible theatre. Sympathy, empathy and compassion have been widely studied in many different disciplines but there has been little agreement among researchers. Studies often address the process of giving sympathy but little has been done with the process of receiving sympathy or the complex intersection of the two. This paper is an autoethnography that explores the relational way we develop an understanding of sympathy and compassion. I use an introspective process to study how I have come to understand compassion and sympathy in care giving for my mother. The New Economy is closely associated with computing & communications technology, notably the Internet. We discuss property rights to, and trade in, the difficult-to-define intangible assets increasingly dominating the New Economy, and the possibility of under-investment in these assets. For a realistic analysis we introduce a Schumpeterian market environment (the experimentally organized economy). Weak property rights prevail when the rights to access, use, andtrade in intangible assets cannot be fully exercised. The trade-off between the benefits of open access on the Internet, and the incentive effects of strengthened property rights, depend both on the particular strategy a firm employs to …

Hierarchy of effects models have underpinned the advertising industry for over 100 years. These models are based on an underlying pattern of cognition => affect=> behaviour, in other words: think=> feel=> do, and suggest that consumers process advertising in a linear fashion, in stages. The thesis explores the process of developing and managing brands. Particular emphasis is placed on how small enterprises gain recognition and acceptance for brands, the obstacles they encounter and how they surmount these obstacles.

The subject of this thesis is the potential role of ICTs as a means of addressing social exclusion. ICTs have been recognised for their double-edged promise: while they may open opportunities in work, education and social practices, their benefits may be inaccessible to disadvantaged members of society. The Dual Paths Of A Political Movement: Convergence And Divergence In Contemporary Conservative Public Address, Lyman Davis Hunt

This study examines the rhetorical choices made in public addresses by members of the contemporary conservative movement in the United States during the 1990s. The contemporary conservative movement in this instance is defined as a post World War II phenomenon. Specifically, it is argued that the popular notion of a unified conservative ascendence in America is but an illusion. Rather, two distinct tribes of conservatives, the economic and the traditional conservative, participate in a rhetorical homology that serves to hide significant ontological differences beneath the dialectical God terms freedom and order.
