The Effectiveness Of Using Computer Assisted Instruction In Teaching English As A Foreign Language In A Japanese Secondary School (Fukuoka, Japan), Robert Guy Chartrand

This paper examines the history and the current state of computer-assisted language teaching and learning to provide a context for the present study. A discussion of teaching English using computer-mediated communication in japan is also described along with the explanation of the courseware used. The study involved one hundred eighty-six high school students learning Oral Communication 1 in a traditional classroom environment and in a computer classroom environment using Dynamic English 1 courseware. The participants were assessed quantitatively and qualitatively before and after five lessons to determine their progress and attitudes towards CALL. The students’ results were analyzed and compared. …

Declarative semantics in logic programming and nonmonotonic reasoning are often defined via fixed points of semantic operators. While many relationships between different semantics known from the literature have been studied, a uniform treatment is still missing. In this paper, we provide uniform operator-free characterizations for some of the most important semantics, more precisely, for the stable, the well-founded, and the Fitting semantics, for the weakly-perfect model semantics, and for the least model semantics for negation-free programs.

Diversity training programs are increasingly being incorporated into organizations as a strategy to meet moral standards and legal challenges. Unfortunately, little research as been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of these programs. This study describes an effective diversity training program as one that changes a member of the organization's negative attitude about racial differences toward a positive attitude.

The Fixed-Point Theorems Of Priess-Crampe And Ribenboim In Logic Programming, Pascal Hitzler, Anthony K. Seda

Sibylla Priess-Crampe and Paulo Ribenboim recently established a general fixed-point theorem for multivalued mappings defined on generalized ultrametric spaces, and introduced it to the area of logic programming semantics. We discuss, in this context, the applications which have been made so far of this theorem and of its corollaries. In particular, we will relate these results to Scott-Ershov domains, familiar in programming language semantics, and to the generalized metrics of Khamsi, Kreinovich, and Misane which have been applied, by these latter authors, to logic programming. This study attempts to understand the differences in activity among an emergent television/Internet audience. The Internet has provided a new entertainment opportunity for producers of television programming. Those television viewers who have also reached out to their favorite television show websites have resulted in a new audience. Examining the programming genre of reality television, two constructs were developed and a written survey administered to a convenience sample of college freshmen. The construct "dual users" was created to examine the television audience that also visits television programming websites. By associating meaning with content, the Semantic Web will facilitate search, interoperability, and the composition of complex applications. A recent Scientific American article described the Semantic Web as 'an extension of the current Web in which information is given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation.' Not long ago, researchers at a Stanford University symposium predicted that this second phase of the Web would be as revolutionary as the Web itself.

The authors introduce a new analytical instrument, the Scene Function Model, as an expansion of Seymour Chatman's theoretical classification of story events into kernels and satellites. The Scene Function Model is designed to examine the narrative function of television scenes and provide the user with a clearer understanding of the structure of the television narrative.

Monstrous Youth In Suburbia: Disruption And Recovery Of The American Dream, Kristen Hoerl

Although the American Dream myth idealizes youth who grow up in suburbia as culturetypes of imminent success, the Columbine High School shootings demonstrated that all not suburban youth will grow up to succeed. The extensive news media coverage of the tragedy reflects broader anxieties about the declining status of the suburbs in American society. In the wake of the shootings, the news media created a myth of monstrous youth in suburbia that functioned to repair suburbanites’ waning faith in the myth of the American Dream.

This paper explores the problem of predicting specific reading mistakes, called miscues, on a given word. Characterizing likely miscues tells an automated reading tutor what to anticipate, detect, and remediate. As training and test data, we use a database of over 100,000 miscues transcribed by University of Colorado researchers. We explore approaches that exploit different sources of predictive power: the uneven distribution of words in text, and the fact that most miscues are real words. We compare the approaches’ ability to predict miscues of other readers on other text. A simple rote method does best on the most frequent 100 …
