Bending The Rules Of “Professional” Display: Emotional Improvisation In Caregiver Performances, Jayne M. Morgan, Kathleen J. Krone
Bending The Rules Of “Professional” Display: Emotional Improvisation In Caregiver Performances, Jayne M. Morgan, Kathleen J. Krone
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
Organizational norms of emotional expression are open to negotiation through improvised performances, as employees may bend or break emotion rules to gain more leeway in expressiveness and participate in the development of their own role identities in the workplace. In this ethnographic study, a dramaturgical perspective is used to analyze the processes and outcomes of emotional improvisation as observed among nurses, technicians, and physicians in a cardiac care center. It was found that the emphasis on maintaining a “professional” appearance in caregiving largely constrains actors to perform along their scripted roles. Results are discussed in terms of practical implications for …

Knowledge Discovery In Biological Datasets Using A Hybrid Bayes Classifier/Evolutionary Algorithm, Michael L. Raymer, Leslie A. Kuhn, William F. Punch
Kno.e.sis Publications
A key element of bioinformatics research is the extraction of meaningful information from large experimental data sets. Various approaches, including statistical and graph theoretical methods, data mining, and computational pattern recognition, have been applied to this task with varying degrees of success. We have previously shown that a genetic algorithm coupled with a k-nearest-neighbors classifier performs well in extracting information about protein-water binding from X-ray crystallographic protein structure data. Using a novel classifier based on the Bayes discriminant function, we present a hybrid algorithm that employs feature selection and extraction to isolate salient features from large biological data sets. The …

Profile Combinatorics For Fragment Selection In Comparative Protein Structure Modeling, Deacon Sweeney, Travis E. Doom, Michael L. Raymer
Kno.e.sis Publications
Sequencing of the human genome was a great stride towards modeling cellular complexes, massive systems whose key players are proteins and DNA. A major bottleneck limiting the modeling process is structure and function annotation for the new genes. Contemporary protein structure prediction algorithms represent the sequence of every protein of known structure with a profile to which the profile of a protein sequence of unknown structure is compared for recognition. We propose a novel approach to increase the scope and resolution of protein structure profiles. Our technique locates equivalent regions among the members of a structurally similar fold family, and …
Do Teacher Opinion Leaders Impact Other Teachers, Annette Eyman
Do Teacher Opinion Leaders Impact Other Teachers, Annette Eyman
Student Work
The purpose of this study was to determine if there were identified opinion leaders among teachers and how those opinion leaders may have influenced teachers’ acceptance levels of the standards and assessment implementation for the language arts curriculum. Three phases of research were conducted. Twenty-four secondary language arts teachers and 109 elementary classroom teachers in the Papillion-LaVista School District were first surveyed to determine their level of acceptance of the standards and assessments for language arts. Each of the respondents was then asked to identify the opinion leaders, or those they turn to and trust regarding the standards and assessment …

Enhanced 911 Technology And Privacy Concerns: How Has The Balance Changed Since September 11?, Aaron Futch, Christine Soares
Duke Law & Technology Review
E911 technology allows for the location of a cellular phone to be determined by the wireless service provider within several hundred feet. As a consequence, privacy groups have been extremely resistant to the implementation of E911. In the wake of the September 11 tragedies, however, the balance between privacy concerns and national security seems to have changed for many American citizens. This iBrief will explore the nature of the E911 technology, the FCC implementation requirements, the concerns of privacy groups regarding its implementation, and how the environment surrounding E911 has changed since September 11.
