Energy, Education, And Media Use: A Panel Study Of The Knowledge Gap, Robert J. Griffin
Energy, Education, And Media Use: A Panel Study Of The Knowledge Gap, Robert J. Griffin
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
A three-year panel study found education related to knowledge gain, and to some maintenance of a knowledge differential, in regard to the energy issue. Use of various public affairs media was stronger among the more highly educated, although use of energy communication media was about equal across education groups. Reading of newspaper energy stories bore the most consistent relationships with energy knowledge among the more highly educated, and viewing of energy commercials bore the most consistent relationships with energy knowledge among the less educated.

Evaluation Of The Junior Leader Organization In Southwestern Indian, Amy Manning
Evaluation Of The Junior Leader Organization In Southwestern Indian, Amy Manning
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Samples from three groups--Junior Leaders, 4-H members, and Non-4-H members--were compared to determine the effectiveness of the Junior Leader organization in Southwestern Indiana. Each sample in the three groups was given the Michigan Leadership Scale and a background information sheet. Comparisons were made between the groups and within each group. The study indicated that the Junior Leader group did not show a significant difference on enough of the variables in the study to conclude the members' skills could be directly attributed to the organization. The Junior Leader group was found to be significantly higher on some of the variables and …

The Nonreader Problem: A Closer Look At Avoiding The Newspaper, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz
The Nonreader Problem: A Closer Look At Avoiding The Newspaper, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz
Communication Faculty Publications
Why do some people avoid reading newspapers? Are their reasons different from those of regular readers? Findings from a survey suggest responses to a sample of avoidance statements by readers are more clearly defined than those nonreaders. This study also raises questions about distinguishing between "regular" and "casual" readers, as findings provide only limited support for the use of "casual" readers in future research. Further development of avoidance gratification theory might help newspapers convert nonreaders to future readers.

Trotter Review
Many people in the black community (I among them) strongly object to the "Frontline" documentary, "Street Cop," which was shown on Channel 2 on March 31. But I have even stronger objections to Ed Siegel's review of "Street Cop," which commends the show as "street smart" and dismisses all the serious criticisms of the show from the black community as "not convincing." I am not exactly sure why "street smart" has such a sterling quality for Siegel, but it is disturbing that such a criterion would take precedent over the criticisms that the program stereotypes blacks and Hispanics and misrepresents …

"Street Cop" Is Not Street-Smart, Kirk A. Johnson
Trotter Review
"Frontline," the award-winnnng WGBH-TV series, is airing a nationally televised special on the war against street drugs. The show, called "Street Cop," takes viewers to Boston's inner city for fifty minutes of heart-pumping violence. We see the police take a sledgehammer to an apartment door in search of drugs as the women and children inside scream in wide-eyed terror. We watch police officers wrestle a young man to the pavement over a suspected drug deal, and we feel the tension mount during a domestic argument until in the confusion a woman is arrested for throwing what an officer thought was …
