An Analysis Of The Elements Of Style In The University Sermons Of John Henry Newman, George Robert Cripe

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Syntax, word usage, and paragraph development form the substance of the analysis of the Apologia. The use of subordination, repetition, and antithesis in sentence construction; the choice of words to produce rhythm and prove mood, as well as the implied metaphor; and careful blending of these elements into an organic unity which reflect not only the personality of the man, but his very thought process; these are the common elements identified by critics of the Apologia. To what extent these elements exist in the prose of the university sermons, and what other elements of style are identifiable in these sermons …

An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Personal Proximity Upon Selected Aspects Of Conversational Content, Ronna S. Loewen

Proxemics is an area of study devoted to the interrelated theories of man's use of space as a special elaboration of culture. Edward T. Hall, an anthropologist, has begun to draw these theories together in his work dealing with proxemics.

It is the purpose of this study to determine whether certain dimensions of interpersonal conversations vary with the distance between the conversants. Three distances were used as experimental variables. Intimate distance was set at nine inches, personal distance at three feet, nine inches, and social distance at eight feet. A Rhetorical Analysis Of Robert F. Kennedy's Speaking On The Issue Of Peace In Vietnam, As Revealed In His Kansas Address, "Conflict In Vietnam", Jeanine I. Rishel

Many Americans have marshaled their rhetoric to support or to denounce the Vietnam war. One of the most insistent voices heard was that of Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

The Educational Radio Media, James L. Tungate '69 Jan 1969

The Educational Radio Media, James L. Tungate '69

Honors Projects

The undeniable affect of radio on the nation's economy, social structure, attitudes and behavior, not to mention marketing, business and industry, and the entertainment field has been great. But the modern broadcaster has a rather unique problem-- a problem of communication. All of the national effects of radio have caused the broadcaster to constantly review and update his knowledge in legal and social areas of developaent, as well as technical advancement. Since change occurs so rapidly and so often in all three, the communication problem becomes even more acute. Broadcast texts of five years ago , for instance, only predicted …

American Intercollegiate Debate: A General Survey With Emphasis On Past & Present Controversies, 1892-1968, Carolyn Harrison Aug 1968

American Intercollegiate Debate: A General Survey With Emphasis On Past & Present Controversies, 1892-1968, Carolyn Harrison

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Since its inception, intercollegiate debate has not only survived storms of controversy and periods of great change but has grown and matured into a vital part of almost every speech department across the country. Today, tournaments are more numerous than ever; the debaters are more plentiful and just as enthusiastic (even if spectators are not). Even though intercollegiate debate has withstood the struggles of its beginning and the ensuing growing pains, maturity has not brought an end to the problems and controversies. Many present day controversies--such as the value of debate, the value of the tournaments, and the type of …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Political And Legal Speeches Of Robert B. Crosby, Gilbert Frank Nykodym Ii May 1968

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Political And Legal Speeches Of Robert B. Crosby, Gilbert Frank Nykodym Ii

Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

I first saw Robert Crosby as a lawyer defending Duane Pope in November 1965. I was intensely interested in the Pope trial for a number of reasons. I was interested because, first, as a law student I found the legal points of interest, second, one of my law professors, Wallace Rudolph, was serving as an assistant defense counsel in the trial and, third, having a bachelors degree in speech I wanted to see what part speaking played in this trial.

As I began graduate work in speech I took a course entitled Rhetorical Criticism under Dr. Donald O. Olson. I …

A Proposed Equipment Development Plan For Closed Circuit Television As It Relates To The Existing Curriculum At College Of Southern Utah, Don Lee Blanchard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A study of closed circuit television systems was made which could be utilized to supplement conventional teaching methods at College of Southern Utah.

A basic, but complete studio installation for production work and radio-television class room instruction in addition to four, individual, self-contained installations are recommended for regular classroom use. All equipment is to be compatible and provide for complete interchangeability of tapes within the system.

Present costs of distribution systems indicate that video tapes produced in the classroom, in the field, or in the studio and played back in the classroom would provide better utilization of available funds. It …

The purpose of this thesis was to survey facilities at Utah State University and the Uintah Basin Center, develop teaching utilization models which would operate in given situations, and identify problems and recommend areas for further study.

The investigator found the facilities presently used by the Uintah Basin Center adequate or nearly adequate for the use of instructional television. There are also classrooms and auditoriums at Utah State University which can be adapted for the use of television. However, equipment must be purchased in both localities. The Uintah Basin Center also must have a trained technician responsible for the equipment. …

An Interpreter's Guide To Rainer Maria Rilke, Joseph A. Leese '68 Jan 1968

An Interpreter's Guide To Rainer Maria Rilke, Joseph A. Leese '68

Honors Projects

"Interpretation is the art of communicating to an audience a work of literary art in its intellectual, emotional, and aesthetic entirety." Charlotte Lee's definition of interpretation seems to be the logical starting poin in the formulation of an interpreter's guide. Miss Lee has stated that the oral interpreter of literature must communicate a work creatively in thesame spirit with which it was written. By this we understand that the interpreter is responsible for much more than the mere oral reading of words; he must discover and be able to elicit the intellectual and emotional meaning of the words and of …
