Recipes for traditional Kentucky foods collected by Professor Donald Knight “D.K.” Wilgus while teaching folk studies classes at Western Kentucky University. Most of the recipes are from south central Kentucky and northern Tennessee. Some recipes give specific directions and measurements, while others are much less specific, giving measurements such as “a handful,” “a pinch,” and “a teacup full.” Some of the recipes are for food preservation, rather than food preparation

This collection consists chiefly of video documentation related to the preparation of burgoo, a stew generally consisting of vegetables and wild game. Several of the videos included were filmed at Claylick United Methodist Church in Anderson County, Kentucky. The collection also includes slides taken at a burgoo dinner at Claylick Church as well as a professionally produced DVD titled “Burgoo!: Mythical Stew of Kentucky.” Lawrenceburg, Kentucky is the site of the annual Anderson County Burgoo Festival.

Transcripton of an oral interview done with James Ashby, b. 1915, as part of a project entitled "A History of the Civilian Conservation Corps at Mammoth Cave National Park" (FA 81). Ashby discusses his experiences as a CCC worker first in Trigg County, Kentucky and then at Mammoth Cave, where he was a cook. He mentions recreational and social activities at the camp. He also discusses his experiences growing up in Drakesboro, Kentucky and Cave City, Kentucky. There are two transcripts for this interview; the second shorter transcript is attached as supplementary material.
