MANY ASPECTS OF Chacoan prehistory remain unclear due to the inaccessibility of unpublished excavation records and photographs for the earliest excavations and explorations. As a result, key unanswered questions about the nature of Chaco itself and individual Chaco villages and towns—small- rather than large-scale issues—have become more, rather than less, significant over time. Despite the magnitude of the excavations at Pueblo Bonito and Pueblo del Arroyo and the amount and range of materials recovered, our knowledge of why these sites were built and how they were used remains remarkably uncertain or, at best, highly contested. • Archival research continues. Arrangements finalized for August 2006 visit to the Lost City collections housed at the Western Archaeological Conservation Center (WACC) in Tucson, Arizona.
• Arrangements completed to have the known Lost City skeletal remains analyzed (non-destructive analysis only) by Dr. Jennifer Thompson and Dr. Debra Martin, UNLV Department of Anthropology, prior to their repatriation as required by NAGPRA.
• Submitted an abstract for a paper on the Lost City skeletal remains to be presented at the Great Basin Archaeological Conference in October 2006.
• Hired students to work on the Lost City field school for the upcoming academic year.

Cultural Site Stewardship Program

• The Cultural Site Stewardship Program now has 229 enrolled site stewards, a 6% increase this quarter and an increase of 674% since program inception.
• One training class was held this quarter and generated 13 new site stewards.
• Seventeen significant cultural site impacts were reported during the quarter. Site Stewards reported 49 significant impacts during the 9 month period compared to 18 impacts during the same period last year.
• Two sets of Volunteer Regional Coordinators were appointed, for a total of 4 teams to cover Clark County.

As the object of my scientific study, I’ve chosen coprolites. It’s not a common choice, but to a paleonutritionist and archaeoparasitologist, a coprolite—a sample of ancient feces preserved by mineralization or simple drying—is a scientific bonanza. Analysis of coprolites can shed light on both the nutrition of and parasites found in prehistoric cultures. Dietary reconstructions from the analysis of coprolites can inform us about, for example, the origins of modern Native American diabetes. With regard to parasitology; coprolites hold information about the ancient emergence and spread of human infectious disease. Most sensational, however, is the recent role of coprolite analysis …

Located in today’s southern Israel, Tell el Hesi provides archaeologists with important clues to political and social changes in the ancient Near East. Zooarchaeological and stable isotopic analyses were conducted to evaluate shifts in animal husbandry practices during changing socioeconomic and sociopolitical conditions in the southern Levant.

During the Early Bronze Age, Tell el Hesi thrived as an agricultural grain producing center for the southern Levant. The acropolis served as both a storage and redistribution center for the inhabitants of Tell el Hesi. This thesis is an investigation of the ceramic assemblage recovered from the Fly Creek Kiln site (1BA226) in Fairhope, Alabama. This large assemblage was recovered from limited excavations in a waster pile and provides insight into the range of vessel forms manufactured at the site, as well as the technological process of salt-glaze ceramic manufacture in the nineteenth century along the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. In order to place the site in context, the history of designs and firing methods used by nineteenth-century potters in the southeastern United States are reviewed.
