Community-engaged scholarship, learning, and service are becoming important parts of university missions, ensuring that academic projects do not just “take” but also give back in meaningful ways. For Native American communities and archaeologists who come from and work with them, this kind of research sensitivity and community accountability is fundamentally important. Methodology: I lived in two Ashanti farming villages, Senchi and Okaikrom, for a total of eight days with four additional day trips. I also commuted to two other rural communities in the Sekyere East district. In these villages I conducted a total of 28 formal interviews of three headmasters, four primary teachers, 10 JHS teachers, nine JHS students, and two nurses. Within the schools I conducted a few group interviews and polls to gain quantitative data about student interest and education aspiration. Conceptualizing Community Identity Through Ancient Textiles: Technology And The Uniformity Of Practice At Hualcayán, Peru, Marie Elizabeth Gravalos

The goal of this thesis is to investigate a single textile assemblage from on site is homogeneously produced. In order to evaluate this, I looked at a sample of textiles and cordage recovered at the site of Hualcayán in the north-central highlands of Peru (ca. 1-1000 CE). Through a technical attribute analysis of metric traits I evaluate the degree of variability present in the overall sample. Making use of a "community of practice" approach, in which a group of individuals are engaged in participatory learning and share a common enterprise, I argue that homogeneous textiles represent a uniformity of practice. …

Thin Section Petrography Of Pottery From Ambergris Caye, Belize, Elizabeth Haussner

Anthropology

Petrography is a valuable tool in which ceramics are studied at a microscopic level, revealing structures, features, and compositional information undiscernible at the macroscopic level. This study uses petrography to investigate Coconut Walk Unslipped (CWU), a pottery type prominent at Late Terminal Classic Mayan archaeological sites on Ambergris Caye, Belize. All CWU sherds in this study are tempered primarily with quartz sand grains although the grains vary in roundness. They also contain small amounts of microcrystalline sparry calcite features. These findings are similar to those of the 1999 study by Iceland and Goldberg on ceramic sherds of a similar age …

Building And Maintaining Plankhouses At Two Villages On The Southern Northwest Coast Of North America, Emily Evelyn Shepard

Plankhouses were functionally and symbolically integral to Northwest Coast societies, as much of economic and social life was predicated on these dwellings. This thesis investigates both plankhouse architecture and the production of these dwellings. Studying plankhouse construction and maintenance provides information regarding everyday labor, landscape use outside of villages, organization of complex tasks, and resource management.

This thesis investigates three plankhouse structures at two sites, Meier and Cathlapotle, in the Lower Columbia River Region of the southern Northwest Coast of North America. Methods consisted of digitizing over 1,100 architectural features, creating detailed maps of architectural features, and conducting statistical and …
