Knife River Indian Villages Archaeological Program: An Overview, F. A. Calabrese Jan 1987

Knife River Indian Villages Archaeological Program: An Overview, F. A. Calabrese

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

The Knife River Indian Villages are located in North Dakota near the confluence of the Knife and Missouri Rivers, just north of the contemporary town of Stanton, North Dakota. They lie within the area between the Garrison Dam to the north and the Oahe Reservoir to the south, the last remaining unflooded segment of the Missouri River valley in the Dakotas. Within the area are river floodplains, terraces, dissected breaks and upland rolling terrain. Forests occur on the floodplain and lower terraces with a variety of native and exotic grasses found on the breaks and uplands. A number of relatively …

Archeological Inventory And Monitoring Plan, Catherine J. Smith Jun 1985

Archeological Inventory And Monitoring Plan, Catherine J. Smith

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The personnel of Dinosaur National Monument, a unit of the National Park Service, are responsible for the protection of natural and cultural resources within its boundaries. While natural resources have received much attention in Dinosaur, cultural resources have not received the treatment they are due. A Cultural Resource Management Plan (CRMP) is currently being designed in Dinosaur to aid in the preservation and protection of cultural resources. Prior to this time, there has been no specific management plan for cultural resources within the monument. As an adjunct to the CRMP, an archeological inventory and monitoring plan has been developed by …

Log Structures: Criteria For Their Description, Evaluation And Management As Cultural Resources, Margaret L. Glover

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis discusses mining cabin sites from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as cultural resources. Special attention is given the concept of "description" in regards to discussion of the resource category, history, and physical attributes of the sites. Evaluation and management suggestions are presented for this particular resource category. To aid in the process of identification of log cabin notching, a typology of notches is developed and presented within the context of the thesis.

Post-Mazama Aboriginal Settlement/Subsistence Patterns : Upper Klamath Basin, Oregon, Frances Marie Philipek Jan 1982

Post-Mazama Aboriginal Settlement/Subsistence Patterns : Upper Klamath Basin, Oregon, Frances Marie Philipek

Dissertations and Theses

A study was conducted in the Upper Klamath Basin, south-central Oregon, to test Luther s. Cressman' s hypothesis characterizing prehistoric Klamath Basin culture as having, from an early date, a marsh/riverine subsistence focus with long-term stability and a slow rate of internal change emphasizing intensification of the existing marsh/riverine utilization pattern. A subsistence/ settlement pattern model was developed to predict aboriginal site occurrence in the upper Klamath Basin.

Frontier Subsistence: An Example Of Nineteenth Century Fur Trade Food Procurement, Leslie A. Perry May 1981

Frontier Subsistence: An Example Of Nineteenth Century Fur Trade Food Procurement, Leslie A. Perry

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

The area of Frontier subsistence strategies holds considerable potential for explaining Euroamerican adaptation in North America between A.D. 1500 and 1900. This thesis examines the interrelationships between food procurement activities of a nineteenth century northern Plains fur trade post, Fort Union, and its environmental and economic settings. The subsistence strategy identified from ethnohistorical, archival, and archeological data illustrates the way in which inhabitants of the fort coped with a variable local environment and the demands of the fur trade. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the post's subsistence strategy indicates that both the subsistence strategy and the economic base of the …

Aboriginal Exploitation Of Marine Food Resources, Alan J. Osborn Jul 1977

Aboriginal Exploitation Of Marine Food Resources, Alan J. Osborn

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

Anthropological interest in human exploitation of resources has increased considerably during the last decade. Archaeological and ethnological literature concerning man's utilization of the world's oceans is relatively abundant and there are now several on-going anthropological research programs, e.g., Aleutian Islands, Pacific Northwest Coast, California, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Ecuador, Chile, and Southern Africa which focus primarily on maritime adaptations. The purpose of this study is threefold: (1) to suggest that anthropological assumptions regarding marine food resources and their use are inadequate; (2) to examine marine ecosystems with respect to structure and dynamics, primary productivity, ecological efficiencies, distributional and quantitative …

Contributions To Tualatin Ethnography: Subsistence And Ethnobiology, Henry B. Zenk Jun 1976

Contributions To Tualatin Ethnography: Subsistence And Ethnobiology, Henry B. Zenk

Dissertations and Theses

There is a considerable amount of unpublished source material on Kalapuyan ethnography. This consists primarily of manuscript field notes from three linguistically trained scholars: Albert S. Gatschet, who collected Kalapuyan linguistic and ethnographic data during a visit to Grand Ronde Reservation in 1877, Leo J. Frachtenberg, who worked with a number of Kalapuyan informants from 1913 to 1915, and Melville Jacobs, who worked with the last surviving speakers of Kalapuyan languages during a number of sessions between 1928 and 1936. Data from these three authorities, plus other available data, reveal many details about aboriginal Kalapuyan life ("aboriginal" here referring to …

The aim of this article is to describe an aspect of Ye'kwana (Makiritare) technology, basketry, in its overall cultural context. We will not only describe basketry as technology per se but the role it plays in Ye'kwana symbolism, ecology, economy and social organization. Also, we will discuss its role in inter-village and inter-ethnic trade and how this role has implications for understanding socio-cultural change in the immediate area of the Padamo River Basin, Territorio Federal Amazonas, Venezuela.

The Ethnohistory Of Baker Cabin, A Clackamas County Pioneer Site, V. Claire Woodward May 1975

The Ethnohistory Of Baker Cabin, A Clackamas County Pioneer Site, V. Claire Woodward

Dissertations and Theses

Baker Cabin, a pioneer log structure, is located on privately owned property near the community of Carver, Oregon. According to traditional accounts the cabin has existed continuously on this site since its construction in 1856. Archaeological excavations of the cabin's foundation and the surrounding area uncovered date-able artifacts and a second foundation with an associated well. Analysis of the artifacts associated with the present cabin foundation indicate a post-1870 construction date those associated with the second foundation and its well indicate an 1850’s occupation.

Four hypotheses that are explored in this paper can be derived from the interpretation of all …

The Significance Of Fluted Points In North American Archaeology, William B. Roosa May 1956

The Significance Of Fluted Points In North American Archaeology, William B. Roosa

Anthropology ETDs

Since publication of the first report on the Folsom site in 1927 much has been written on the subject of Folsom and other fluted points. There is, however, no current synthetic of information on fluted points. This paper is an attempt to synthesize the existing data on this subject. An effort will be made to show the significance of fluted points and their place in North American archaeology. Previous efforts dealing with this subject will be discussed with emphasis on terminology used, typologies established, and distribution studies made. Criteria for establishing types of fluted points with be discussed. Published and …

A Re-Evaluation Of The San Juan Basket Maker Culture And Possible Relationships To Non-Ceramic Group, Charles H. Mcnutt Jun 1954

A Re-Evaluation Of The San Juan Basket Maker Culture And Possible Relationships To Non-Ceramic Group, Charles H. Mcnutt

Anthropology ETDs

During the past few years of study, several of the many problems of Southwestern archeology have come to my attention. That which seems perhaps more interesting then any other concerns the early Anasazi horizons which are variously described as "the Basket Makers," "Basket Maker II and III,” and "the Basket Maker culture." For this reason there is here submitted a discussion of the general Basket Maker concepts.

The Direct-Historical Approach In Pawnee Archeology (With Six Plates), Waldo R. Wedel, Jade Robison , Depositor Jan 1938

The Direct-Historical Approach In Pawnee Archeology (With Six Plates), Waldo R. Wedel, Jade Robison , Depositor

Nebraska State Historical Society: Transactions and Reports

The direct-historical approach in archaeology assumes the existence of an analogous relationship between historic accounts and prehistoric data, serving to establish cultural identity under the basis of cultural continuity. In this article, Dr. Waldo Wedel uses the direct-historical approach to review some preliminary findings of archaeological investigations undertaken as part of an early effort to study the Pawnee culture of eastern Nebraska. The University of Nebraska Archeological Survey was established in 1929, led by Dr. W. D. Strong, in an attempt to better understand prehistoric Pawnee culture. Previous evidence existed in the form of A. T. Hill’s artifact collection and …

The Identification And Distribution Of The Ceramic Types In The Rio Puerco Area, Central New Mexico, Dorothy Louise Luhrs Jun 1937

The Identification And Distribution Of The Ceramic Types In The Rio Puerco Area, Central New Mexico, Dorothy Louise Luhrs

Anthropology ETDs

The present study was begun with the aim of determining what ceramic types are present in the Rio Puerco valley of the East, with consideration of their source, extent, variations and contributing factors. Due to the limitations of time the investigation was confined to the south-central portion of the area. Because the region is approximately one hundred and forty miles in length, from the northern headwaters of the Rio Puerco to the junction of the Rio Grande and Rio Puerco, it was considered best to limit the survey to a portion of the valley large enough to yield sufficient data …
