A Functional Analysis Of Recorded Pre-Contact Archaeological Sites On Lopez Island, Washington, Julia Kunas

Lopez Island, Washington has been the subject of archaeological study for over a century. Through an evolutionary archaeology framework, this thesis uses a functional analysis of recorded precontact sites on Lopez Island to determine how previous sampling and research strategies have influenced what is known about the island’s archaeology. Knowing what is currently known about the island’s archaeology shows how recorded sites can be further investigated to address regional Salish Sea research questions. I developed and applied a paradigmatic classification to 54 sampled sites from the Washington DAHP’s WISAARD database by their level of previous research, microenvironment, and archaeology. This …

The Llanos de Mojos of the southwestern Amazon region of Bolivia once supported large Pre-Columbian indigenous populations who were regarded as skilled farmers, and whose agricultural pursuits are still documented on the landscape through tens of thousands of raised fields. Nevertheless, the plants that were cultivated on these fields that contributed to a large part of the local cuisine are not well understood. Microbotanical analyses using starch grains and phytoliths of food residues were conducted on 55 archaeological ceramic fragments from four forest islands in Mojos where people resided recurrently from cal BCE 1200 to cal CE ~1430. North African youth who join their parents in Spain in childhood or adolescence face challenges unlike those of the older generation. Moving through institutional spaces and processes, from public school to post-secondary training and work, first-generation youth exercise cultural and linguistic bridging capacities while facing continual challenges as representatives of a racially stigmatized minority. This study develops a theoretically informed method and technique to compare variability between pre-contact riverine and hinterland Mesa archaeological resources of the mid-Columbian River Basin in Central Washington. I observed the behavior of 17 chacma baboons (Papio ursinus) in order to understand the relationship between rearing history, dominance hierarchy, and social behavior. The Centre for Animal Rehabilitation and Education (C.A.R.E.) has utilized hand-rearing in the past and is currently using a surrogate-rearing method. Hand-rearing involves one or more primary caregivers attending to an infant for 6 – 12 months. Surrogate-rearing involves one individual being the primary surrogate for the first 3 months of the infant’s life prior to bonding her or him to an adult female baboon before integrating both back into the surrogate’s troop. Archaeologists have struggled to combine remotely sensed datasets with preexisting information for landscape-level analyses. In the American Southeast, for example, analyses of lidar data using automated feature extraction algorithms have led to the identification of over 40 potential new pre-European-contact Native American shell ring deposits in Beaufort County, South Carolina. Such datasets are vital for understanding settlement distributions, yet a comprehensive assessment requires remotely sensed and previously surveyed archaeological data. In 2017, John Walden led an excavation of the Tutu Uitz Na intermediate elite center, found in the Maya site of Lower Dover, Belize. He and his team uncovered two burials, designated SG1-BU2 and SG1-BU3. Their initial report claims that there were three individuals, all sacrificially bound and killed within an eastern triadic shrine. In 2019, Dr. Kirsten Green-Mink and Justine Bye, both of the University of Montana, re-analyzed the Tutu Uitz Na burials and performed a comprehensive bioarchaeological analysis. Many young Filipinos are using a wide array of ‘chemicals’ that structure, and are structured by, their everyday lives. These chemicals - cosmetics, supplements, narcotics, beverages - range from local to foreign, cheap to expensive, licit to illicit; orally ingested to topically applied, and are used for different reasons in a variety of contexts. Shotgun metagenomics applied to archaeological feces (paleofeces) can bring new insights into the composition and functions of human and animal gut microbiota from the past. However, paleofeces often undergo physical distortions in archaeological sediments, making their source species difficult to identify on the basis of fecal morphology or microscopic features alone. Here we present a reproducible and scalable pipeline using both host and microbial DNA to infer the host source of fecal material. Coprolites have been a source of study for archeologists due to several reasons: they not only provide information on the life and nutritional habits of ancient individuals but also on their health. In this paper, we processed 10 coprolites collected at La Cueva de Los Muertos Chiquitos (600–800 CE), Rio Zape, Mexico, with acetolysis solution for pollen analysis. The number of pollen grains/gram of each coprolite sample was quantified along with the macroscopic remains of these samples. The main food item ingested by the population was maize, followed by Agave. Squash blossoms were also part of their food source …

Pinworms infected Ancestral Pueblo populations since early periods of occupation on the Colorado Plateau. The high prevalence of pinworm found in these populations was correlated with the habitation style developments through time. However, in previous studies, Turkey Pen Cave, an early occupation site, and Salmon Ruins, a late occupation site, exhibited prevalences that were anomalously low, suggesting that these sites were outliers. Alternatively, it is possible that the previous quantification method was not successful in detecting the real prevalence and eggs per gram, which led to inexact interpretations. งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลไกการหลอกลวงเครื่องสําอางปลอมในกลุ่มพริตตี้ โดยศึกษา พฤติกรรมการเลือกเครื่องสําอางของพริตตี้ที่แตกต่างในแต่ละกลุ่ม เพื่อให้ เกิดความรู้ ความเข้าใจว่าเหตุใด เครื่องสําอางปลอมยังคงเป็นที่นิยมอยู่ในสังคมไทย และเหตุใดในกลุ่มพริตตี้ มีการใช้เครื่องสําอางปลอมเหล่านี้ และให้แนวทางป้องกันการตกเป็นเหยื่อของพริตตี้จากกลไกการ หลอกลวงเครื่องสําอางปลอม งานวิจัยชิ้นนี้เป็นงานวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ โดยใช้เทคนิคการเก็บข้อมูล สัมภาษณ์ แบบเจาะลึกในพริตตี้ทั้งหมด 15 คน โดยแบ่งประเภทผู้ให้สัมภาษณ์ออกเป็น 2 กลุ่ม กลุ่มละ 7 คน และอีก 1 คน โดยกลุ่มแรก เรียกว่า กลุ่มพริตตี้ที่ใช้เครื่องสําอางปลอมเป็น ประจำ กลุ่มที่สองเรียกว่า กลุ่มพริตตี้ที่ไม่ใช้เครื่องสําอางปลอมเป็นประจำ และอีก 1 คน คือ พริตตี้ที่ไม่เคยใช้เครื่องสําอางปลอม จากการศึกษาพบว่า กลุ่มพริตตี้ที่ใช้เครื่องสําอางปลอมเป็น ประจำมีความเสี่ยง และมีผลกระทบมากที่สุดเมื่อเทียบกับกลุ่มอื่น โดยจาก กลุ่มตัวอย่างกลุ่มนี้ 7 รายมีผลกระทบเกิดขึ้น 4 ราย ในขณะเดียวกันกลุ่มที่ไม่ใช้เครื่องสําอางปลอม เป็นประจำ มี ทั้งหมด 7 คน แต่ได้รับผลกระทบ 1 ราย ดังนั้นหากพริตตี้มีการใช้เครื่องสําอางปลอมเป็นประจำ ความเสี่ยงก็จะมีมากขึ้นในส่วนของผลกระทบที่จะเกิด นอกจากนี้ จากการศึกษาพบว่า กลไกการหลอกลวง ในเครื่องสําอางปลอมเกิดจากปัจจัยเหล่านี้ 1. การใช้ค่านิยมของสังคม 2. การใช้สื่อโฆษณาชวนเชื่อ 3. การพิจารณาจากบุคคลต่างๆ เช่น ผู้มีชื่อเสียงในสังคม หรือการให้ความเห็นจากบุคคลอื่น 4.การเชื่อถือบุคคลรอบข้างเพื่อน บุคคลใกล้ชิดโดยเป็นส่วนสำคัญอย่างมาก ที่ส่งผลต่อกลุ่มพริตตี้ยังคงเป็นเหยื่อในเครื่องสําอางปลอม
