The collection consists of Dr. Bryant’s professional and organizational files, biographical data, correspondence, and speeches. Most of the material relates to her publishing efforts, her work as a faculty member at Brooklyn College, and her involvement with professional organizations, especially the New York branch of the American Association of University Women. Most of the material extends form 1950-1975. A list of the more prominent individuals who corresponded with Margaret Bryant has been included as an appendix to the inventory. In September of 1894, John Hyrum Koyle, Jr., said that he was shown in a dream or vision a large, rich deposit of gold and an underground storehouse of artifacts hidden by people of Ancient America. This dream was the beginning of a mining venture which has never produced anything of value, has been opposed vigorously by both officials of the LDS Church and the State, yet has claimed supporters numbered in the thousands.
The mine has profoundly affected (and continues to affect) the lives of many families who have come into the sphere of its influence. The lore of …

A Folk History Of The Manti Temple: A Study Of The Folklore And Traditions Connected With The Settlement Of Manti, Utah, And The Building Of The Temple, Barbara Lee Hargis

For some time I have been collecting folk material of the pioneers of Sanpete County, Utah, and their subsequent building of the Manti Temple. A few of the county's senior citizens witnessed part of the construction in the late 1870's and 1880's and the dedication in 1888 of the Temple. Many more are descendants of men and women who were directly involved in the building of the Temple and in the early work done there after its construction.
The stories that these people tell are significant. A collection of them represents a rich folk history of a religious, pioneering people …

The Influence Of The Southern Nevada And Southern Utah Folklore Upon The Writings Of Dr. Juanita Brooks And Dr. Leroy R. Hafen, Pansy L. Hardy

Since no writing is entirely objective, it is the contention of this thesis that Dr. Juanita Brooks and Dr. LeRoy R. Hafen, the most authoritative writers of the Southern Nevada and Southern Utah region, were greatly influenced in their writings by the folklore of the region and of the people. The two aspects of folklore which are most prominent in their writings are, first, those which treat the supernatural aspect of divine intervention, and, second, those which surround the struggle for survival.

It has been well established that the cultural features of a society are reflected in its folk tales. Boas first presented his views on the cultural significance of folk tales in a series of papers on North American Indian mythology (Boas 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8), and he published detailed demonstrations of the possibility of reconstructing the culture of a tribe from its mythology, using Tsimshian (Boas 4) and Kwakiutl (Boas 7) material.
