Analysis Of Historic Glass In Kittitas Valley Sites, Minori Muramoto

The purpose of this project was to investigate a sample of the historic glass artifacts from three excavation sites in the Kittitas Valley: the Grissom Site (45KT301), the Robber's Roost Site ( 45KT800), and the Sorenson Site (no site number). I addressed five questions about the glass artifacts: 1) what was the minimum number of vessels, 2) what functional types of glass were found, 3) what technologies were used to manufacture them, 4) when, where, and which company made this glass, and 5) what Ellensburg stores or companies are represented in the sample. The Chipped Stone Tool Industries Of Blackman Eddy, Belize, Matthew Patrick Yacubic

One of the most significant finds at the site of Blackman Eddy, Belize, is a series of superimposed structures that date between 1200 B.C.-A.D. 600 (calibrated). Because it was continuously occupied for over 1800 years, this site provides a unique opportunity to examine long-term socio-economic changes in the eastern Maya lowlands. This thesis is a diachronic study of the chipped stone tool artifacts of Blackman Eddy using technological, attribute, and use-wear analysis. This thesis explores how boarder guards limits the amount of knowledge an anthropologist really can obtain doing research. The research is based upon a concrete case study in Egypt where local and national government bodies "border guard" how knowledge is gained within a development project. This research shows how although anthropological knowledge and research provide a body of theory within which policy is created the policy should come with a "health warning". Field research undoubtedly give more information than so called "armchair" research, but it is far from giving the policy makers the full picture of the society, or project …

We argue that the specious justification for the invasion of Iraq -- a war based on a pretext of anticipatory self-defense -- necessarily exacerbates the inherent tendency of war to dehumanize and humiliate the enemy. This tendency is particularly evident in the variant of anticipatory self-defense that we have denominated as "capacity preemption," a type of claim that by definition depends upon characterizations of the opponent as utterly inhuman.

Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson's 1938 study of a Iatmul-speaking village in the middle Sepik River, Papua New Guinea, remains an anthropological efflorescence. At the very least, this collaboration resulted in a well-known fieldwork photo: Mead and Bateson in the famous "mosquito room." Ironically, little is actually known about the 1938 undertaking, which remains, however famous, sadly obscure. Towards correcting this misjudgment, I have two objectives. First, I want to provide a selective overview of the 1938 project, focusing on its unique outlook, tone, voices, morality, and theoretical perspectives. The 2005 edition of Standards and Guidelines has been designed as an advisory framework for archaeological fieldwork and reporting in the state of South Carolina. It offers guidance to project archaeologists, administrators, and other interested parties who prepare reports and case studies like those initiated or conditioned by Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended. While this edition of Standards and Guidelines focuses on archaeological concerns, readers should note that Section 106 of the NHPA also requires the consideration of buildings, districts, structures, and objects. Evidence Of Pre-Clovis Sites In The Eastern United States, Albert C. Goodyear

Over the past 25 years, a number of archaeological sites in eastern North America have manifested evidence of human occupations dating earlier than 11,500 RCYBP. These sites include Meadowcroft Rockshelter, Penn.; Cactus Hill, Va.; Saltville-2, Va.; and Topper, S.C. Except for Topper, pre-Clovis (earlier than 11,500 RCYBP) remains were encountered incidental to conducting normal research. Topper was intentionally tested for the possibility of pre-Clovis remains. This paper is a brief review of the geological contexts, dating, and artifactual evidence of these sites. Collectively, they indicate a late-glacial time range of approximately 12,000 to 16,000 RCYBP. Technologically, Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Cactus …

Contextualizing Histories: Our Rotuman Experience, Alan Howard, Jan Rensel

Alan conducted fieldwork on Rotuma in 1959—1960 and did not return until 1987, this time with Jan. Together, we have returned nine times since, for visits ranging from one week to six months. During this period the "field" has changed. About four-fifths of Rotumans now live abroad. We have visited Rotuman communities in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the U.S. mainland, and Europe, and we keep in touch with Rotumans via the Internet. Prolonged involvement has resulted in a shift away from a scientific generalizing viewpoint to one emphasizing context and personal histories. It has also forced us to reexamine our …

Gender And Cosmos Emplaced: Women's Houses And Men's Houses In Bariai, West New Britain, Papua New Guinea, Naomi Mcpherson

Pacific Studies

In Papua New Guinea, the men's cult houses are dramatic examples of vernacular architecture that have overshadowed the importance and symbolic meanings of the domestic dwelling, or women's houses. This essay is an ethnography of house forms, specifically women's houses and men's cult houses in Bariai, West New Britain. The focus is on relationships of articulation between the built environment and gender concepts within the framework of Bariai cosmology, which show how gender concepts and relations are emplaced and the built environment is gendered.
