Co-Wife Conflict And Cooperation, William R. Jankowiak, Monika Sudakov, Benjamin C. Wilreker
Co-Wife Conflict And Cooperation, William R. Jankowiak, Monika Sudakov, Benjamin C. Wilreker
Anthropology Faculty Research
Conventional wisdom holds that the polygynous family system is as sexually and emotionally satisfying as a monogamous one. Ethnographic accounts of 69 polygynous systems, however, provide compelling evidence that the majority of co-wives in a polygynous family prefer pragmatic co-operation with one another while maintaining a respectful distance. Moreover, there often is a deep-seated feeling of angst that arises over competing for access to their mutual husband. Co-wife conflict in the early years of marriage is pervasive, and often marked by outbursts of verbal or physical violence. Co-wife conflict may be mitigated by social institutions, such as sororal polygyny and …
Christians Against Globalization In The Philippines, Kathy Nadeau
Christians Against Globalization In The Philippines, Kathy Nadeau
Anthropology Faculty Publications
This paper focuses on the Basic Christian Communities in the Philippines that work to counter human and environmental rights violations resulting from macro-economic development processes. While not every activist-led and mass-based people's movement includes critical environmental issues on their agendas for social change, this paper directs its attention to the progressive Basic Christian Community movement that incorporates an environmentally concerned and team-oriented approach to problem solving at the local level. This movement is part of an international bottom-up effort to counteract some of the negative effects of global capitalism (e.g., the fragmentation of close-knit communities that were once based on …

South Carolina Standards And Guidelines For Archaeological Investigations, The Council Of South Carolina Professional Archaeologists, South Carolina Department Of Archives And History, State Historic Preservation Office, South Carolina Institute Of Archaeology And Anthropology--University Of South Carolina
Faculty & Staff Publications
The 2005 edition of Standards and Guidelines has been designed as an advisory framework for archaeological fieldwork and reporting in the state of South Carolina. It offers guidance to project archaeologists, administrators, and other interested parties who prepare reports and case studies like those initiated or conditioned by Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended. While this edition of Standards and Guidelines focuses on archaeological concerns, readers should note that Section 106 of the NHPA also requires the consideration of buildings, districts, structures, and objects. While this manual therefore provides an overview of the …
Evidence Of Pre-Clovis Sites In The Eastern United States, Albert C. Goodyear
Evidence Of Pre-Clovis Sites In The Eastern United States, Albert C. Goodyear
Faculty & Staff Publications
Over the past 25 years, a number of archaeological sites in eastern North America have manifested evidence of human occupations dating earlier than 11,500 RCYBP. These sites include Meadowcroft Rockshelter, Penn.; Cactus Hill, Va.; Saltville-2, Va.; and Topper, S.C. Except for Topper, pre-Clovis (earlier than 11,500 RCYBP) remains were encountered incidental to conducting normal research. Topper was intentionally tested for the possibility of pre-Clovis remains. This paper is a brief review of the geological contexts, dating, and artifactual evidence of these sites. Collectively, they indicate a late-glacial time range of approximately 12,000 to 16,000 RCYBP. Technologically, Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Cactus …

Changes In Income Distribution Patterns, Wealth, And Poverty Among New York City’S Racial/Ethnic Groups Between 1999 And 2004, Laird W. Bergad
Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies
Introduction: This study examines demographic and socioeconomic aspects of the Latino population of the New York City area between 1999 and 2004.
Methods: Data on Latinos and other racial/ethnic groups were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey, reorganized for public use by the Minnesota Population Center, University of Minnesota, IPUMSusa. Cases in the dataset were weighted and analyzed to produce population estimates.
Results: The most striking differential when household income patters are examined is that among Latino households there was almost no increase in median household income between 1999 and 2004. Among whites, African Americans, and Asians …
