The Symbiotic Circle Of Community: A Comparative Investigation Of Deviance Control In Intentional Communities, Zachary Rothenberg
The Symbiotic Circle Of Community: A Comparative Investigation Of Deviance Control In Intentional Communities, Zachary Rothenberg
Cleveland State Law Review
With each community considered, I will try to paint a picture of the many collectivizing factors at work: (1) the history or tradition of the community; (2) its underlying ideology, belief and value systems, and/or common interests or goals; (3) the nature of its communalism; (4)the nature of its isolation from the outside world; and (5) its decision-making and governance structure. Finally, I will look to its "gate-keeping" or circumference-drawing functions-how the community controls deviance and maintains unity within, while distinguishing itself from the chaos without. In Section I, I will consider two extreme examples of community (the Oneida Community …
Low-Saturated-Fat Soybean Oil Reduces Saturated Fat In School Menus, J. M. Mahnken, S. F. Lutz, C. J. Anders, W. R. Fehr
Low-Saturated-Fat Soybean Oil Reduces Saturated Fat In School Menus, J. M. Mahnken, S. F. Lutz, C. J. Anders, W. R. Fehr
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
This study evaluated the impact of using low-saturated-fat soybean {Glycine max (L.) Merr.} oil on the saturated fat content of school menus. Seventy-six weekly menus were obtained from the Iowa Department of Education during School Meals Initiative reviews for the 1996-1997 school year. Three modifications were performed on school menus using the Nuttikids computer program: Low-saturated- fat (LSF) soybean oil replaced traditional vegetable oil in menu items; LSF soybean oil was substituted for traditional vegetable oil, solid fats, and egg yolks in recipes; and a menu simulation was conducted where oils and solid fats used in menu items were …

Out Of Africa: Origins Of The Taenia Tapeworms In Humans, Eric P. Hoberg, Nancy L. Alkire, Alan De Queiroz, Arlene Jones
Out Of Africa: Origins Of The Taenia Tapeworms In Humans, Eric P. Hoberg, Nancy L. Alkire, Alan De Queiroz, Arlene Jones
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications
Phylogenetic and divergence date analyses indicate that the occurrence of Taenia tapeworms in humans pre-dates the development of agriculture, animal husbandry and domestication of cattle (Bos spp.) or swine (Sus scrofa) Taeniid tapeworms in Africa twice independently colonized hominids and the genus Homo prior to the origin of modern humans. Dietary and behavioural shifts, from herbivory to scavenging and carnivory, as early Homo entered the carnivore guild in the Pliocene/Pleistocene, were drivers for host switching by tapeworms to hominids from carnivores including hyaenids and felids. Parasitological data provide a unique means of elucidating the historical ecology, foraging behavior …
Fame And Latter-Day Saint Youth: Value Conflicts And The Interpretive Audience, Shellie M. Frey
Fame And Latter-Day Saint Youth: Value Conflicts And The Interpretive Audience, Shellie M. Frey
Theses and Dissertations
Fame is a paradoxical issue: a phenomenon that is both embraced and shunned simultaneously in American culture and particularly within many religious institutions. Leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), for instance, discourage its members (particularly the youth) from seeking out fame as well as famous individuals as role models. Yet they also incorporate positive rhetoric about fame as well in terms of famous LDS people, landmarks or groups. Furthermore, various aspects of the LDS Church (worldwide televised conferences, widely distributed books written by Church leaders, etc.) are highly mediated, thus, integrated with a public venue …

The Emergence Of Dialogic Identities: Transforming Heteroglossia In The Marquesas, F.P., Kathleen C. Riley
The Emergence Of Dialogic Identities: Transforming Heteroglossia In The Marquesas, F.P., Kathleen C. Riley
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Te 'Enana 'the people' of the Marquesas, French Polynesia, have been engaged for some time in the dialogic negotiation of their heteroglossic identity. Based on an ethnographic study of language socialization in the Marquesas, this dissertation examines how communicative forms are acquired within a changing socio-cultural matrix, as well as on how cultural habits and beliefs are produced and reproduced via verbal interaction.
My first two months of fieldwork were spent in Tahiti (the capital of French Polynesia), living and studying the language use and cultural patterns of an 'enana family. Subsequently, I spent ten months in a village in …
The Tombs Of Aperlae In Ancient Lycia: A Catalogue And Discussion, Justine Adele Hobbs
The Tombs Of Aperlae In Ancient Lycia: A Catalogue And Discussion, Justine Adele Hobbs
Theses : Honours
In June of 2000 I was fortunate enough to become a member of a small team of Edith Cowan University students lead by Dr William Leadbetter participating in archaeological fieldwork in Turkey. The site, known as Aperlac, is a fortified industrial site located on the southwest coast of Turkey, in an area known in antiquity as Lycia. The Edith Cowan team was originally asked to study and record the inscriptions that had been found up on the many sarcophagi present up on the site. Up on reaching the site and reviewing the existing data concerning the tombs up on which …

This piece consists of an early 21st century whimsy, a dialogue that borrows and blends history and humor to illustrate some puzzles of copyright law in the context of digital technology (with references to Folsom v. Marsh and Abbott & Costello).
School Liability For Peer Sexual Harassment After Davis: Shifting From Intent To Causation In Discrimination Law, Deborah L. Brake
School Liability For Peer Sexual Harassment After Davis: Shifting From Intent To Causation In Discrimination Law, Deborah L. Brake
Articles
This essay seeks to explain the Davis v. Monroe County Board of Education case as an interpretation of discrimination that notably and correctly focuses on how institutions cause sex-based harm, rather than on whether officials within chose institutions act with a discriminatory intent. In the process, I discuss what appears to be the implicit theory of discrimination underlying the Davis decision: that schools cause the discrimination by exacerbating the harm that results from sexual harassment by students. I then explore the significance of the deliberate indifference requirement in this context, concluding that the standard, for all its flaws, is distinct …

Conversational Borderlands: Language And Identity In An Alternative Urban High School, Betsy Rymes
Conversational Borderlands: Language And Identity In An Alternative Urban High School, Betsy Rymes
Betsy Rymes
This groundbreaking study of an innovative charter school is the first to look closely at adolescent identity by analyzing the language of narratives told in school. The author helps us to understand why adolescents sometimes make choices that seem incomprehensible to the adults who work with them. This unique book links issues of school reform with close analysis of language and interaction within a school to help us understand the needs and desires of some of today’s diverse adolescent students. Both compelling and illuminating, this important book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the human effects (and not …
Serum Leptin Levels And Anthropometric Correlates In Ache Amerindians Of Eastern Paraguay, Richard G. Bribiescas
Serum Leptin Levels And Anthropometric Correlates In Ache Amerindians Of Eastern Paraguay, Richard G. Bribiescas
Richard G. Bribiescas
Leptin is a recently discovered peptide hor- mone secreted primarily from adipocytes in humans and other mammals; it is a reflection of fat stores, and has been associated with reproductive function. However, few leptin measurements are available from nonindustrialized popula- tions, including contemporary hunter/gatherer communities undergoing the transition to sedentary agriculture. This in- vestigation reports single-sample serum leptin measure- ments in healthy Ache Amerindian males (n 21; average age, 32.8 3.4 SE) and females (n 12; average age, 31.3 4.3) in eastern Paraguay. Ache leptin concentrations were much lower than in industrialized populations, although significant sexual …
