Licuala Palms In Brunei Dusun Ethnobotany, Jay H. Bernstein, Roy F. Ellen
Licuala Palms In Brunei Dusun Ethnobotany, Jay H. Bernstein, Roy F. Ellen
Publications and Research
Several species of Licuala occur in the Merimbun area of Tutong district, Brunei Darussalam. One kind of Licuala, called benjiru by the local Dusun population, is often collected for sale as a vegetable. While Licuala is not generally considered an important economic plant, overharvesting in the Merimbun area suggests that conservation measures may be needed to protect it from local extinction. Besides benjiru, other kinds of Licuala recognized by the Dusun are called silad and ukang. The three kinds of Licuala do not have one overall name in the Dusun language, but constitute a covert category at the "intermediate" ethnobotanical …

Gender Patterns In Science Course Enrollment And Course Drop Patterns In An Iowa Senior High School, Sandra L. Stephen, Elizabeth D. Riesz
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
In order to ascertain whether local patterns corresponded to the national trends, which show fewer female and minority students enrolling in and completing high school physical science courses, the Cedar Rapids Community School District studied the course enrollment and drop patterns of seniors in one of the District high schools. Male students predominated in physics and AP Chemistry, and the proportion of males in AP Physics was significantly greater than the proportion of females. The proportion of females in chemistry was significantly greater than their proportion in the senior class. Course dropping patterns revealed a statistically significant relationship between gender …

Curing Our Tunnel Vision: The Representation Of The Ohlone In Bay Area Museums, Amy C. Raimundo
Curing Our Tunnel Vision: The Representation Of The Ohlone In Bay Area Museums, Amy C. Raimundo
Research Manuscript Series
Representations of culture, cultural empowerment and the politics that accompany these issues are currently at the center of debates regarding anthropological museum displays. Contemporary museology has come under fire recently because of the narrow, one-sided or slanted views that some groups feel museums have presented to the public in the past. Many museums are recognizing this misrepresentation and are trying to look into ways of creating partnerships with the people whose histories and cultures they present to the public (Herle 1994:2). The anticipated result is that a more balanced representation of a culture will emerge.
Viewing museum displays is a …
Review Of Kalinga Ethnoarchaeology: Expanding Archaeological Method And Theory, Luann Wandsnider
Review Of Kalinga Ethnoarchaeology: Expanding Archaeological Method And Theory, Luann Wandsnider
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
In the 1960s, several practitioners (James Deetz, James Hill, William Longacre, and Robert Whallon) of what was eventually called the "New Archaeology" used ceramic stylistic elements to support claims about the postmarital residence of prehistoric populations. In particular, Hill and Longacre argued for two post-A.D. 1000 pueblos in Arizona that the observed lack of variation in ceramic stylistic elements was owed to the practice of matrilocal residence. Anthropologically informed common sense grounded their assumptions that females, schooled by their mothers, were responsible for ceramic production. These interpretations especially the under-supported assumptions---were criticized on many counts.

The Ethnobot Any Of A Mestizo Village, Christina A. Pereira
The Ethnobot Any Of A Mestizo Village, Christina A. Pereira
Nebraska Anthropologist
The study of ethnobotany examines the role plants play in a society. In many
subsistence-based agricultural societies plants provide a variety of resources for the subsistence of the people, including food, medicine, tools, and adornment. This paper examines the manner in which members of a Mexican mestizo village utilized local plants in their daily lives. Data is drawn from an ethnographic field school rsearch during the summer of 1995 in the ejido Emilio Carranza, near the town of Los Rayon in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon. Residents classified plants in four broad categories, and maintained many of the most …

Survey Of Hematozoa And Intestinal Helminths Infecting Green-Winged Teal In Guthrie County, Iowa, Rick Klann, Bryan Hellyer
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Five helminths and one sporozoan were recovered from 21 hunter-killed green-winged teal collected from Lakin Slough in Guthrie County, Iowa during October and November of 1991. The sporozoan, Leucocytozoon simondi, was identified in blood smears from all 21 teal. The helminths recovered from the alimentary tract included three trematodes, Cotylurus flabelliformis, Echinostoma trivolvis and Zygocotyle lunata; a hymenolepid tapeworm; and one acanthocephalan, Corynosoma constrictum. The ecological factors associated with infection by these parasites are discussed.
