Introduction Of "War Among The Yugoslavs" (Special Issue), Joel Halpern

Emeritus Faculty Author Gallery

This issue presents American and West European anthropological perspectives on recent events prior to the outbreak of war in former Yugoslavia. Included are articles by anthropologists from Croatia and Serbia which deal directly with the war and its impact on their respective societies. The first group of essays should be understood as background to armed struggle involving violent death, destruction, and bereavement and those tragedies still in the making. The horrors associated with these events in this Balkan setting are unparalleled in Europe since World War Two. They do not have precise parallels elsewhere but bring to mind the sufferings …

103-Report Of The April 1993 Archaeological Survey Of The Little John Site (20ae344) In Allegan Township, Allegan County, Michigan, Arthur J. Desjardins

Reports of Investigations

In the Fall of 1992, Mr. Mark Horn contacted the Anthropology Department at Western Michigan University regarding property he owns in Allegan County, Michigan. In his assessment, this property exhibited a significant amount of prehistoric cultural material on the surface, and he felt that it might warrant formalized archaeological investigation. Additionally, Mr. Horn, a school teacher in Allegan, asked about the possibility of including his stndents in any future fieldwork that might be conducted on his property. This information was recieved by Dr. William Cremin of the Anthropology Department, who took the matter under consideration as a potential undertaking for …

Hawaiian Flag Quilts: Multivalent Symbols Of A Hawaiian Quilt Tradition, Joyce D. Hammond Jan 1993

Hawaiian Flag Quilts: Multivalent Symbols Of A Hawaiian Quilt Tradition, Joyce D. Hammond

Anthropology Faculty and Staff Publications

As researchers have amply demonstrated, quilts are a rich source of historical information. Quilt makers' beliefs, concerns, and emotions are often embodied in quilt motifs and names. Quilt making, bestowal, and use can reflect interpersonal ties and social conventions. Quilts can also convey economic circumstances, political convictions, and social commentary. In every aspect of their creation and use, quilts provide invaluable insights into peoples' lives and a society's history. Among Hawaiian quilts, one tradition in particular has much to tell about Hawai'i's past - the Hawwaiian Flag quilt.

Deciphering The Grand Village Of The Illinois: A Preliminary Assessment Of The Grand Village Research Project, Lenville J. Stelle, James A. Brown, Charles L. Rohrbaugh, Thomas E. Emerson, Robert Jeske

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

On April 24, 1987, Thomas Emerson at the State Historic Preservation Office received a telephone call from a Chicago lawyer who wanted an answer to a simple question: "Are there any laws that protect old Indian villages and graves that are on the National Register?" Unfortunately, the answer was a simple “no.” At the time, Emerson did not suspect that this question would initiate a more than four-year struggle to save one of the most important historic sites in the country. The site, known variously as the Zimmerman site, the Grand Village of the Kaskaskia, Old Kaskaskia Village, the Grand …

Assessing Animal Well-Being: Common Sense, Uncommon Science, David Fraser Jan 1993

Assessing Animal Well-Being: Common Sense, Uncommon Science, David Fraser

Assessment of Animal Welfare Collection

The scientific assessment of the well-being of an animal involves finding indicators of three broad criteria: 1) a high level of biological functioning; 2) freedom from suffering in the sense of prolonged fear, pain, and other negative experiences; and 3) positive experiences such as comfort and contentment. The tools available to assess animal wellbeing include a mixture of common sense and cutting-edge science. Measures of animal productivity can help to assess an animal’s level of biological functioning, but they need to be used with care. Among veterinary approaches, pathology detects breakdown in biological functioning, while epidemiology identifies the circumstances under …

Animal Welfare And Individual Characteristics: A Conversation Against Speciesism, Marc Bekoff, Lori Gruen Jan 1993

Animal Welfare And Individual Characteristics: A Conversation Against Speciesism, Marc Bekoff, Lori Gruen

Animal Welfare Collection

It seems impossible for a human being not to have some point of view concerning nonhuman animal (hereafter animal) welfare. Many people make decisions about how humans are permitted to treat animals using speciesist criteria, basing their decisions on an individual's species membership rather than on that animal's individual characteristics. Although speciesism provides a convenient way for making difficult decisions about who should be used in different types of research, we argue that such decisions should rely on an analysis of individual characteristics and should not be based merely on species membership. We do not argue that the concept of …

"Parting Friends": Southeastern Kentucky Funeral Customs. 1880-1915, Sue Lynn Mcdaniel (Mcguire) Jan 1993

"Parting Friends": Southeastern Kentucky Funeral Customs. 1880-1915, Sue Lynn Mcdaniel (Mcguire)

SCL Faculty and Staff Publications

At the turn of the twentieth century, southeastern Kentucky remained a sparsely settled region where traditional values abounded. Throughout society, funeral rites and changes in them evince values of family, community, and religion. Visitors to the area, whether settlement-school teachers, preachers, or researchers, vividly described deathbeds, burials, and funeral occasions which illuminate local values.

Reflecting the writers' urban prejudices, these Journals and publications along with contemporary newspaper accounts provide insight into southeastern Kentucky mourning customs during the years 1880 to 1915. Although the turn of the twentieth century brought change in the way urban dwellers dealt with mourning, their mountain …

Behavioral Sex Differences In Children Of Diverse Cultures: The Case Of Nurturance To Infants, Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This chapter draws on the data from the Children of Different Worlds study (Whiting & Edwards, 1988) to consider the origin of sex differences in children’s behavior worldwide, in particular: (1) how different kinds of social behavior are elicited by different contexts of socialization (defined by the sex, age, status, and kinship of social interactants, ongoing activities, and other potent dimensions of setting); (2) how these contexts of socialization are distributed across cultures and associated with various adult subsistence strategies, family structures, household patterns, and forms of social networks; and (3) how boys and girls of each age in diverse …

Review Of The Origins Of Agriculture And Settled Life By Richard S. Macneish. Norman And London: University Of Oklahoma Press, 1992. 433 Pages., Alan J. Osborn

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Excerpt:

Following a brief review of the "environmentalist's" (e. g., Ratzel, de Candolle, Childe, Braidwood, and Flannery) and the "materialist's" (e. g., Marx, Vavilov, D. Harris, Binford, and Cohen) accounts, MacNeish presents his "trilinear theory." It consists of "three hypothetical models and three hypotheticaI sets of causes" for the development of plant domestication and sedentism. This "trilinear theory" is a world culture history similar to the multilinear developmental frameworks proposed "by Julian Steward (The Theory of Culture Chtange: The Methodology of Multilinear Evolution, 1955). MacNeish's multilinear scheme is cross-cut by three developmental stages, i. e., food collectors, transitional …
