The South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology received a grant from the South Carolina Wildlife and Marine Resources Department and the South Carolina Department of Archives and History to conduct a statewide assessment of the cultural resources of the state. This report details the results of this one-year study to establish a representative sample of the archaeological and historical resources of the state of South Carolina, to be used by the South Carolina Heritage Trust as a planning tool for the possible acquisition of such sites as Heritage Preserves. We have been studying the migrations of the descendants of nine men who came to Massachusetts before 1650 and have compiled a computerized database that includes all the people born before 1860 in the patrilines. Thus we have what the nine genealogists who studied these families thought was close to a complete list of family members alive in 1850. Here we focus on our attempts to find these individuals on the 1850 federal census.

One Hundred Years Of Investigations At The Linn Site In Southern Illinois, Charles R. Cobb

The Linn site represents one of the major Mississippian occupations in the Mississippi River floodplain of southwestern Illinois. The multiple mound center has received sporadic professional attention over the years dating from Bureau of Ethnology investigations in the latter part of the nineteenth century; however, little work by modern standards has been conducted at the site. Consequently, very little is known about the Linn site and its relationship to other Mississippian traditions in surrounding regions. This study synthesizes data from past research on the site, the results of which indicate that the Linn site likely played a major role in …

The Old Santee Canal Sanctuary encompasses the last vestiges of a once great industrial enterprise, a scant mile or more of a 23 mile long canal, the first of its kind in America. When this archaeological project was first contemplated it was not expected to yield much in terms of resources and data.
Part I of this project, the archaeological survey of Biggin Creek and the canal, revealed the existence of an extremely rich resource - the tide-lock, several vessels, earthen works and the remains of the tide-lock gates.

The Santee Canal Sanctuary - Part I, Joe J. Simmons Iii, Mark M. Newell

A proposed recreational and environment and historical interpretive park has been planned by the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism (PRT) jointly with the Santee Cooper Public Service Authority for the land along the west side of the Tailrace Canal extending between US Route 52 and Stoney Landing in Berkeley County, South Carolina. The Santee Canal Sanctuary, as it has been named, encompasses the southernmost ca. 2.0km (1.25mi) of the abandoned Santee Canal and Biggin Creek which essentially bisect the property longitudinally.

Anthropological Studies

Traditional research into the Late Archaic period in the Southeastern United States has focused on matters related to subsistence and procurement, carried out under such paradigms as Cultural Ecology, Optimal Foraging Theory, and settlement/subsistence studies. The Landscape Archaeology approach is able to unify a number of these traditionally separate avenues of research into a holistic approach, while incorporating recent revisionist models such as Social Territories, Boundary/Center studies, and the dialectic between the physical/cultural landscape and individual perceptions of it. When the Landscape Archaeology approach is operationalized through Geographic Information Systems methodology, a truly powerful theory and method may be applied …

In May of 1987, the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology was informed that human remains were being unearthed by road construction in a private residential development on Folly Island, South Carolina. This information led to a two year investigation of the 1863 winter camp of the Federal Army, used during its siege of Charleston. During the investigations a black military cemetery was salvaged (site 38CH920), and three areas of the Federal camp were examined as part of a data recovery project, and a later research effort (sites 38CH964, 38CH965, 38CH966).
