The southeastern United States has long been of interest to students of the North American Paleoindian period because of the abundant and diverse lithic remains found there. Several thousand fluted and unfluted lanceolate points have been found throughout the southern states. Despite the high archaeological potential of this region, few concentrations of Paleoindian artifacts have been found that would lend themselves to archaeological excavation. Most Paleoindian points have been found on the surface, often as isolated finds. Geological conditions during the late Pleistocene-early Holocene did not produce deeply buried sites over much of the Southeast, particularly on the intertluvial surfaces. …

To Settle Is To Conquer: Spaniards, Native Americans, And The Colonization Of Santa Elena In Sixteenth-Century Florida, Karen Lynn Paar

Sixteenth-century Spaniards believed that “to settle is to conquer,” and they brought this tradition established during the Reconquest of the Iberian peninsula from the Moors to their conquest and colonization of the Americas. The Spaniards’ multi-faceted approach to settlement proved remarkably enduring as shown by the mid-1560s effort of Pedro Menendez de Aviles to claim La Florida, which then included much of the present-day southeastern United States. Within this territory Santa Elena, now known as Parris Island, South Carolina, came into the focus of French and Spanish monarchs as the political and religious battles raging in Europe in the mid-sixteenth …

A Historic Context Statement For A World War Ii Era Black Officers' Club At Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, Steven D. Smith

Research Manuscript Series

This report provides a historic context statement for Building 2101, a WWII period Black Officers' Club located at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, that is still in active use. The best historical evidence indicates that the building, a standard A-12 temporary classroom building, was designed as the club for black officers stationed at Fort Leonard Wood sometime between June 1942 and January 1943. Later in 1943, it was expanded with an addition. The building was built as part of Fort Leonard Wood's initial construction and used as a Personnel Adjutant's Office for the Engineer Replacement Training Center, 7th Training Group (Colored), …
