South Carolina Naval Wreck Survey, Christopher F. Amer

From 1998 through 2003, the Maritime Research Division (MRD) of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology (SCIAA) at the University of South Carolina (USC) conducted research into the presence of US Navy shipwrecks in South Carolina waters. The US Navy claimed 96 shipwrecks in the state. However, historical research confirmed that, in fact, only 47 Navy-owned vessels met their demise in state waters. The remaining shipwrecks include, US Army transports, vessels owned by the Confederacy at the time of their sinking, and a number of vessels that flew foreign flags. Finding Historic Shipwrecks In The Dynamic Coastal Environment Of Winyah Bay: A Geoarchaeological Approach, Christopher F. Amer

This presentation discusses a collaborative research project between the University of South Carolina’s South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology-Maritime Research Division, the College of Charleston, and Coastal Carolina University’s Marine Science Department, interfacing historic coastal zone paleoreconstructions with an archaeological marine remote sensing survey to locate, assess, identify, and conduct preliminary documentation of the Spanish Capitana. The Capitana, one of six vessels used in a failed settlement attempt by the Spanish Crown to gain a foothold in the New World, was lost in 1526 when it grounded and sank approaching Winyah Bay, South Carolina.

Occasional Papers – Southeastern Paleoamerican Survey

This monograph, by Douglas A. Sain, is based on his master’s thesis research on the organization of Clovis blade technology. This second monograph of the Occasional Papers series of the Southeastern Paleoamerican Survey closely follows the first in terms of the meticulousness of the study, and the new information it provides about the Topper Site. Detailed studies of Clovis material are eagerly sought by Paleoindian archaeologists, enthusiasts, and particularly by lithic analysts. Sain provides a well-rounded literature review for these groups, and an innovative approach to identifying technological blades. The presentation describes whaling by the Basques, both before and during their operations in the area of Red Bay (Canada), as well as the land-/maritime-based archaeology which began in the 1970s in the Red Bay area to reconstruct the Basque operations there. The location of the wreck of the Basque whaler, San Juan, was found, artifacts recovered, and much was learned about whaler design and construction.

Technological advances in DNA recovery and sequencing have drastically expanded the scope of genetic analyses of ancient specimens to the extent that full genomic investigations are now feasible and are quickly becoming standard1. This trend has important implications for infectious disease research because genomic data from ancient microbes may help to elucidate mechanisms of pathogen evolution and adaptation for emerging and re-emerging infections. Here we report a reconstructed ancient genome of Yersinia pestis at 30-fold average coverage from Black Death victims securely dated to episodes of pestilence-associated mortality in London, England, 1348–1350. Although investigations of medieval plague victims have identified Yersinia pestis as the putative etiologic agent of the pandemic, methodological limitations have prevented large-scale genomic investigations to evaluate changes in the pathogen's virulence over time. We screened over 100 skeletal remains from Black Death victims of the East Smithfield mass burial site (1348–1350, London, England). Recent methods of DNA enrichment coupled with high-throughput DNA sequencing subsequently permitted reconstruction of ten full human mitochondrial genomes (16 kb each) and the full pPCP1 (9.6 kb) virulence-associated plasmid at high coverage. Defining The Williamson's Plantation: Huck's Defeat Battlefield, Michael C. Scoggins, Steven D. Smith, Tamara S. Wilson

This report presents the results of historical and archaeological research to define the Revolutionary War battle of Williamson’s Plantation (Huck’s Defeat), located in York County, South Carolina. Analysis of historic documents, metal detector survey, and archaeological excavations at Historic Brattonsville revealed the location of the battlefield (site 38YK564) although there appears to be very little archaeological remains associated with the Williamson plantation house. Survey surrounding the site indicates that site 38YK564 is the only remaining remnant of the battlefield.
