Some archeological sites in Java, Bali, and Sumatra do not have historical data. This is because during the research, there has not been found any documents relating to the existence of the artifacts. The reconstruction of the relation between the sites and their history were made through analyzing the folk stories and local beliefs about the artifacts. Some of the artifacts are in the forms of temples, gates, water springs (source of holy water during the Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms in Java), stairs, caves for meditation, and layers of stones, such as found in Candi Bima (the Bima temple), Goa Jaran (the …

What Do Students Need To Know? How About The Idea Of Progress ?, David Pickus
What Do Students Need To Know? How About The Idea Of Progress ?, David Pickus
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Studying Archeology needs an understanding of the idea of progress. The concept of progress was popular in the 1920s, and it was not for Archeology alone, but it became a new intellectual understanding of the world. “The idea of progress is one of the fundamental notions grappled by civilizations with a historical sense“. “Does this change in the use of metals equal development?,” reminds us to the Xuanyuan era where stone was used to make weapon, whereas jade in the time of Huangdi, and bronze in the time of Yu. This shows that Archeology is related to history and some …

Dinamika “Timur” Dan “Barat” Dalam Tokoh Boonyi Kaul Noman Dalam Shalimar The Clownkarya Salman Rushdie, Chysanti Arumsari
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
As the concepts of “West” and “East are not only recognized in area studies, they are also known in the study of culture. Both concepts represent a culture, of which they are not always in agreement, but are often opposition, one against another. Shalimar the Clown, a novel by Salman Rushdie presents “West” and “East” using India for its main background. The research analysizes Boonyi Kaul Noman, one of the main characters, who shook the dichotomi of West against East within the paradigms of Orientalism and Occidentalism. The discussion on the construction of East defines the relationship between the locality …

Existentialism By Soren Aabye Kierke Gaard: Indiana In Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade As A Representation Of An “Authentic” Human Being, Chintia Asmiliasari
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Existentialism of Soren Aabye Kierkegaard is a study focusing on the individual existence as an authentic creature. Existentialism can only be achieved by an individual’s boldness and belief to commit responsibly to a decision he has made. The decision made by each individual should be based on his subjective truth and should not be influenced by the collective truth called the objective truth. The subjective truth will later lead each individual to his way finding an absolute truth, although despair and uncertainty haunt every decision he has made. A totality of believing in making decision and holding the commitment into …

Analysis Of Audience Reception On Youtube Towar D Gender Construction In The Music Video If I Were A Boy By Beyonce Knowles, Ria Avriyanty
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Youtube is one of the favorite sites to share videos. Moreover,it facilitates the users to give a free and direct comment toward the videos they watch. The research examines the music video entitled If I Were a Boy (2010) by Beyonce Knowles as well as the authentic responses from the viewers in Youtube. I argue that this music video creates a conventional gender construction which perpetuates the patriarchal norms in the society. As an attempt to give a new perspective on the similar kind of research, I do not stop at this point. Applying the concept of encoding-decoding by Stuart …

Thoughts On Music Ethnography In Urban Indonesia: From Yogyakarta Recordings To Translocal Popular Culture In The Melayu Borderlands, Max Richter
Antropologi Indonesia
Previous studies on Indonesian music focused on cultural heritage and traditional preservation or western-style modern music such as pop and rock music. Both were perceived as separate genre, even modern music often downplayed traditional one. The author argues analysis of hybrid genre like keroncong and dangdut would provide more complicated picture than such dichotomy. He explained long history of cultural exchanges in various parts of Indonesia which showed these two genres influenced each other. As a case study the author presents urban music as main character of urban social lives in Indonesia. This article depicts street music and campursari in …

Contestation, Negotiation And Culture In The Reconstruction Of Riau's Identity, Lugina Setyawati
Antropologi Indonesia
This paper explained the issue of inequality which appears in the process of democratization through the analysis of contestation, negotiation, and the reconstruction of Riau’s identity. Ideally, democratic principles respect equality; however, identity expresses inequality because it defines who is dominant and subordinate in a certain social group through ethnic category and gender identity. It separates the insiders and outsiders with different rights through cultural idioms. Moreover, the identity is not merely applied in the private domain, but also in the public sphere. This paper resulted from research conducted in Riau Province in a periode of decentralization process. The findings …

Death can be understood merely as a transition from one life to the next or simply as an end of life. These two conceptions are established due to our lack in knowledge about what will happen to us after we die. In order to make any sense, both conceptions require an understanding of death (and also life) as individual matter, that the only death (and life) I experienced is always my own. Nevertheless, in the first conception death does not exterminate one’s self, while in the second conception death exterminate one’s self. However, nonexistence of any access to the first-person …

Otetnografi: Mempelajari Kasus Pribadi Peneliti, Semiarto Aji Purwanto
Antropologi Indonesia

Selo Soemardjan Sang Penerjemah: Subjektivitas Dalam Asal-Usul Cara Berpikir Sosiologis Di Indonesia, Geger Riyanto
Antropologi Indonesia
This paper was written against a background of interest to trace the formation of sociological ways of thinking that tend to legitimize power in Indonesia. During the preparation, I found problems in the perspective commonly used in researching the formation process of knowledge; knowledge is considered a form of power. Such approach is problematic because it denies subjectivity – which includes cognitive activity and experiences that are owned only by the existence of the related – absolute in the process of both producing and reproducing knowledge. Yet this criticism isn’t easy to elaborate because the question is, how do we …

Their resistance resulted in loss of human life as well as the destruction of religious buildings, educational institutions, and other public facilities, which are believed to have historical connections to their opponents, i.e. Muhammadiyah or its leader, Amien Rais. The Tapal Kuda community shares typical cultural characteristics such as Maduranese, Muslim, “remain traditional”, based on Ulama, and made their kiai (religious leader) as the highest role-model. Petani Dan Pedagang: Perubahan Ekonomi Dan Agama Di Buton, Blair Palmer
Antropologi Indonesia
This article examines a dispute over proper religious practice in an all-Muslim village in Buton, Southeast Sulawesi. Traditionalists and modernists disagree over whether agricultural ceremonies involving offerings for territorial spirits should be allowed to continue. Local views on this dispute are explored with reference to the historical context of religious practice in the village, and processes of social change over the past several generations. It is argued that key social, political and economic dynamics which are relevant to the current religious dispute include the decline of agriculture in the village, the eclipsing of the Butonese Sultanate and integration into the …

Antropologi Indonesia
This paper is an autoethnographic exploration which would like to show that culture is always in the process of constructing those that are present in various track events. Through the exposure of various stages of life and moments of encounters with Others, the author wants to confirm his argument on how culture is an arena of discourses that is continually constructed, in which also involves power relations between Self and Others. Using Abu Lughod’s approach and several contributions from philosophical thinking, the author would like to state that the theoretical journey and life trajectory is a continuity which shows the …
Agama, Kebudayaan, Dan Kekuasaan: Catatan Teoritik Dari Seorang Salafi, M. Belanawane
Agama, Kebudayaan, Dan Kekuasaan: Catatan Teoritik Dari Seorang Salafi, M. Belanawane
Antropologi Indonesia
Theoretical shifts in anthropological studies in recent decades has given way to renewed recognition of looking at issues of identity, namely that the sociall life, the arena in which the identity plays in, must be fundamentally understood as negotiating meanings. This is where Clifford Geertz’s interpretative approach becomes important yet problematic. Important because Geertz offers a humanistic approach which examines how meanings and symbols become important in the view of the community itself. Therefore, he argues, cultural interpretation requires a more in-depth analysis, also more intelligent and complex in which its purposes and those complexed cultural forms that can not …
