The Beads From Oudespost I, A Dutch East India Company Outpost, Cape, South Africa, Karlis Karklins, Carmel Schrire

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

The site of a provisioning station operated by the Dutch East India Company near the Cape of Good Hope during the late 17th and early 18th centuries produced a variety of European beads of several materials. A "typical" Dutch bead assemblage of the period, it is significant because it comes from one of very few independently dated bead-producing sites in southern Africa and, as such, will be instrumental in the formulation of a chronology for the beads found in this part of Africa.

This report documents the excavation and analysis of a large, isolated ceramic vessel discovered in the spring of 1988 in the Hite Marina area of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Utah Project #89-NA-051N. Several college students from Western State College in Colorado (Dean Brian, Matt How, Cathy Arvey, and Mike Donaldson) were hiking in the area when Dean Brian discovered the pot. Aware of the possible significance of such a find, Matt How immediately contacted Park Archaeologist Kris Kincaid and informed her of the vessel's location. My thesis rests on the notion that, because of the increase of freedoms in the Soviet Union today, many republics are demanding that their autonomy be restored and that this nationality crisis, an unforeseen and unwanted byproduct of recent reforms, has grown into such a disaster that it is now actually impairing the whole reform movement in the Soviet Union as civil unrest and strife are beginning to threaten the stability of this huge empire.

This thesis draws from research done in a particular urban setting, and illustrates the foundations of a type of social structure called "respite community". "Respite community" is a specifically urban phenomenon which can be defined as temporal, ad hoc, face to face, an aggregate of people who seek temporary relief from social stresses and support through socialized interaction.

Survey Research And Ethnographic Research: An Appraisal Of Two Research Methodologies, V Suchitra Mouly

IIMB Management Review

This paper highlights the differences between survey research and ethnographic research, in terms of goals and perspectives, research design and method, nature of the relationship between researcher and the community studied, and the nature, presentation and use of findings. While spelling out the inherent strengths and limitations of each approach, the Paper argues that to study the life of a community “from the insider's point of view”, an ethnographic approach is more appropriate.
