Crowd Scenes: Pacific Collectivity And European Encounter, Vanessa Smith Mar 2004

Crowd Scenes: Pacific Collectivity And European Encounter, Vanessa Smith

Pacific Studies

This essay looks at the phenomenon of the Pacific crowd as registered within eighteenth-century voyage accounts. The experience of the crowd on the beach-an experience of being overwhelmed-was integral to European encounters with Pacific islanders. However, the impact of the crowd has been neglected within Pacific scholarship, which has not accessed the insights of crowd theory within analyses of contact. Concomitantly, crowd theory ignores the peripheral crowd scene. The crowd has been theorized as a predominantly metropolitan phenomenon and historicized in the context of (primarily industrial) urbanization. Through close textual analysis of a number of European voyage texts, particularly Bligh's …

Elections On Guam, 1970-2002, Donald R. Shuster Mar 2004

Elections On Guam, 1970-2002, Donald R. Shuster

Pacific Studies

Guam, taken as a spoil of the 1898 Spanish-American War, has since been an unincorporated U.S. territory in the western Pacific. Although U.S. citizenship was conferred on the island people by the 1950 Organic Act, the chief executive was not popularly elected until 1970. This article describes electoral politics and parties on Guam: candidates, campaigns, results, and analyses. The first seven gubernatorial elections are surveyed, and the contests of 1998,2000, and 2002 are described in detail. The 1998 race, an especially contentious one, was finally settled by a U.S. Supreme Court decision. The 2002 governorship contest pitted media power and …

Research Notes: Empty Nests And Parental Well-Being In An Asian-Pacific Population: An Exploratory Test, Thomas K. Pinhey

Pacific Studies

Guided by theories of role loss and role stress, this study explores mental health outcomes for parents in Guam's Asian-Pacific community whose last offspring has left the family "nest." In contrast with findings reported in studies of U.S. mainland populations, the results of analyses of data from Guam's 1991 Behavioral Risk Factor Survey (N = 398) indicate that the launching of the last offspring from family homes results in role loss and significantly greater emotional trauma for Asian-Pacific women, thus suggesting that parenting may be less stressful for women in Guam. I present a discussion of the implications of the …

Research Manuscript Series

The following report , brought together with great skill and insight by editors Russell K. Skowronek and Margaret A. Graham , provides a rich trovel of valuable information about what has been found there archaeologically and what it means. Some of this meaning reflects the kinds of lives people were leading in ancient times where students now cross over the Alameda Mall, and the very different kinds of activities people were conducting in those ancient times. Part reflects how these discoveries have already affected present-day consciousness, and what some of the changes have been in regard to public appreciation of …

"Where Will You Sleep Tonight?" The Samo Longhouse, A Metaphor Of Spatial And Social Structure, R. Daniel Shaw Dec 2003

"Where Will You Sleep Tonight?" The Samo Longhouse, A Metaphor Of Spatial And Social Structure, R. Daniel Shaw

Pacific Studies

The juxtaposition of physical space and social interaction among the precontact Samo people of Papua New Guinea's east Strickland Plain is analyzed through a rich cultural metaphor reflecting on where people habitually sleep. Where a person sleeps establishes individual status within the collectivity of a household, which is identified as both a dwelling and an interactive group of family-oriented people. A longhouse was typically built on a ridgetop amid gardens, sago-lined swamp, and surrounding forest, together creating an economic environment that, in effect, fed the community. Similarly, social space was created through the reciprocal exchange of female siblings that enabled …

Celebrating Mother's Day In A Melanesian Village Church, Deborah Van Heekeren Dec 2003

Celebrating Mother's Day In A Melanesian Village Church, Deborah Van Heekeren

Pacific Studies

Christianity dominates village sociality in the Hula villages of Papua New Guinea's southeastern coast to the extent that the United Church has appropriated and indigenized the Western custom of setting aside a day to celebrate motherhood. In the process Mother's Day has been transformed into an expression of local Christian values to which women should aspire. In many ways the events that take place invert gender roles, but we also find that certain things are always left to women. The events related here, through the perspective of the United Church Women's Fellowship (UCWF), also comment briefly on Adventism in Irupara …

Offshore Gambling In Pacific Islands Tax Havens, Anthony B. Van Fossen Dec 2003

Offshore Gambling In Pacific Islands Tax Havens, Anthony B. Van Fossen

Pacific Studies

This article analyzes offshore (including Internet) gambling in Oceania-particularly its uneven development in Vanuatu, the Cook Islands, Norfolk Island, and Palau. Offshore gambling's evolution and future prospects are examined in terms of tensions between (1) the drive by entrepreneurs and regional taw-haven promoters to increase the volume and variety of gambling among the array of services that Pacific Islands tax havens provide and (2) the growing moves by metropolitan countries to curb taw avoidance and evasion, economic loss, money laundering, and other forms of crime and deviant behavior associated with offshore gambling.

The Church As Embodiment And Expression Of Community On Ujelang And Enewetak, Marshall Islands, Laurence Marshall Carucci Dec 2003

The Church As Embodiment And Expression Of Community On Ujelang And Enewetak, Marshall Islands, Laurence Marshall Carucci

Pacific Studies

The church as a culturally constructed location is constantly "unmade and remade" on Ujelang and Enewetak Atolls (Marshall Islands) with semantic values tied to wider social and historical changes. Stories about the original church represent it as a sacred site forming the physical, moral, and cosmogenic center of the Enewetak community. During World War II, Japanese military rule transformed the church into a location of resistance. During postwar exile to Ujelang Atoll, the village-centered church became a site where solidarity-enhancing practices allowed the community to confront isolation and suffering. A new church, built in 1978 as a symbol of reinvigorated …

Accounts Of Fighting And Cannibalism In Eastern New Guinea During The Missionary Contact Period, 1877-1888, As Told To Charles Abel, David Wetherell Jun 2003

Accounts Of Fighting And Cannibalism In Eastern New Guinea During The Missionary Contact Period, 1877-1888, As Told To Charles Abel, David Wetherell

Pacific Studies

Field notes by missionary Charles W. Abel of the London Missionary Society, contained in two little-known handwritten documents, describe traditional warfare customs, including treatment of captives and cannibalism among the peoples of the Milne Bay/China Strait region of southeastern New Guinea, as told to him by Paulo Dilomi and other informants. The editor transcribes these notes here and theorizes that Abel's knowledge of these activities provides context for the missionary's derogatory attitude toward the "savage" Papuan, in contrast to the perspectives of later observers including other missionaries and anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski.

Fisheries Development In Kiribati: Sustainability Issues In A "Mirab" Economy, Frank R. Thomas Jun 2003

Fisheries Development In Kiribati: Sustainability Issues In A "Mirab" Economy, Frank R. Thomas

Pacific Studies

Fisheries development has long been recognized as a means of achieving greater economic independence for Pacific "microstates." The Republic of Kiribati is particularly well endowed in marine resources, largely due to its extensive Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). However, the extraction of those resources rests mainly with distant-water fishing nations (DWFNs) who pay a license fee. This feature of a "MIRAB" economy, which encompasses elements of migration, remittances, aid, and bureaucracy, only marginally benefits Kiribati. Government has therefore looked to develop its own fishery' industry and begun to focus on inshore fisheries and aquaculture projects to diversify Kiribati's meager exports. In …
