Site 41TV338, located in the west bank and terrace of Barton Creek west of Loop 360, was found in 1975. The SDHPT, during an archaeological survey in 1983, determined the site would be impacted by the present undertaking.

Because the area in the vicinity of the project is considered environmentally sensitive, very special construction specifications will be enforced during total implementation of the project. These specifications are designed to prohibit disruption of the natural environmental setting to the greatest degree possible. Most of the right of way acquired for construction of the highway facility is not to be touched during …

The Reading Site, 41BU16, is a prehistoric and historic site located in Burleson County, Texas, on the south terrace of the Brazos River at the crossing of State Highway 21. The site was first reported in 1972 but was not known to extend into the right-of-way of SH 21 until the clearing of heavy brush in the right-of-way in 1979 revealed its presence. Since that time the site has been known by local collectors, but the archaeology section of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) was not notified until August 25, 1983.

Excavations, in summer 1976, have provided new data on the ancient human occupations at Baker Cave, Val Verde County, Texas. One objective of the research program was to obtain further information on habitation at the site during Late Paleo-Indian times. Radiocarbon dates of 7000 B.C. can be linked to this period and are attributed to the Golondrina complex. This cultural pattern is represented by a deposit containing chipped stone artifacts and other cultural materials. The most important discovery was a cooking pit that yielded an abundance of faunal and floral remains. Interpretation of the paleoenvironmental data suggests a climatic regime …

During April 1982, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research at The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted a cultural resource survey and evaluation of 31.68 acres slated as an expansion area for the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. This was accomplished through two research methods: (1) a literature and archival search supplemented by interviews of knowledgeable persons; followed by (2) a planned subsurface archaeological testing program. The Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), under contract with Alexander Utility Engineering, Inc., (letter dated May 5, 1980), conducted an archaeological survey for the Medina Electric Cooperative, Inc. Although the CAR was contracted in May 1980, at the request of Medina Electric Cooperative, Inc., the actual survey was not carried out until February 25-March 1, 1981. In 1977-1978 excavations were conducted at 41 LK 67 in Live Oak County, south Texas, by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio. The investigation of this prehistoric archaeological site was part of an extensive program of reconnaissance and excavation necessitated by the construction of the Choke Canyon Reservoir on the Frio River by the Bureau of Reclamation.

The site is situated in shallow colluvial deposits capping an old terrace remnant of the Frio River. The excavations involved 193 m2 in three separate areas and revealed Late Prehistoric and Late Archaic components. Recognizably older artifacts …

Site 41 LK 31/32 is located in Live Oak County, southern Texas on a wide horseshoe bend of the Frio River, approximately 16 km west of the Frio's confluence with the Nueces River. Construction of the Choke Canyon Reservoir by the Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) had necessitated an excavation program at the site prior to destruction. The Eagle Hill II site (16SA50) is located in a rolling upland area of western Louisiana known as Peason Ridge. Because of its location in a saddle, the locale accumulated colluvial sediments during certain intervals of the late Quaternary; in addition, it served as a habitation area for prehistoric groups. Sediments were preserved from the early and late Holocene, apparently reflecting the relatively cooler and moister conditions of those periods that were conducive to erosion-preventing vegetation. The site was excavated in a manner to provide both vertical and horizontal information on site occupation at relatively high resolution. A sampling design …

Additional archeological investigations and monitoring of restoration activities at the Sam Houston Home in Huntsville, Texas, are described in this report prepared by Jody C. Pevey. The original location of the Law Office was not found, but significant features relating to the Houston Home were discovered. Removal of the e¥isting east chimney and pad revealed the remnants of an earlier brick chimney pad with associated brick hearth supports. The types of bricks, mortar and construction techniques appear to be the same as those noted in a series of exterior and interior brick piers found along the south side of the …

In April, May and June of 1980, Prewitt and Associates, Inc. conducted archeological monitoring and excavations in specified areas of 41WB22, a late nineteenth and early twentieth century cemetery in the City of Laredo, Webb County, Texas. These investigations were directly solely towards locating and removing graves exposed by pit and trench excavation activities at the construction site of the Laredo Transit Operating Facilities. The result was the accumulation of data regarding the disinterment of twenty-two graves which contained twenty-three individuals; six of these were partially or totally removed during backhoe excavations prior to the initiation of archeological monitoring, and …

Test excavations at two prehistoric archeological sites in eastern Willacy County, Texas, were conducted by Prewitt and Associates, Inc. during Ma y and July of 1981. The purpose of the investigations at sites 41WY71 and 41WY72 was to assess the potential eligibility of the sites for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. It is concluded that site 41WY71 does not warrant nomination to the Register, but that site 41WY72 is of sufficient importance that it should be considered to be eligible for nomination to the Register.

The site is reputed to be the livestock ranch of Mission San Fran~isco de la Espada in the late 18th century. Large areas of the site were surveyed to determine if prehistoric sites were present. The irrigation system in San Antonio was an integral part of its early history. Within the San Antonio area irrigation was a necessity to extend the planting season. An extended planting season would allow for diversified crops with different harvesting periods. The first municipal irrigation system was the San Pedro Acequia. It was constructed to serve the town with fresh water for household use and agricultural purposes. As the population increased and technology improved, the acequias changed in both appearance and function. In time, the San Pedro Acequia system became part of San Antonio's forgotten past.

In early May 1981, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted test excavations at Mission de la Espada. In an area north of the church, planned for future parking, three test units were excavated to determine the soil stratification and whether construction would impact architectural or cultural features. No indications of such features was found. In an area outside the east wall, where apparent wall foundations appear in aerial photographs, testing revealed that all but a few traces of a structure built in the early 1900s have since been removed.

A history was composed of the project area in relation to that of the Republic and State of Texas. A structural history of the town of Velasco was compiled from archival and historical research. In July 1981, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted an archaeological survey of power line right-of-ways in Schleicher and Crockett Counties. The survey was performed for the Southwest Electric Cooperative, Inc. Eight archaeological sites were located during this project. Three sites (41 SL 5, 41 SL 8, and 41 SL 9) are recommended for additional documentation if they are to be additionally disturbed. The other sites found need no further work.

In October 1980, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, under contract to Fisher, Harden and Fisher, Inc., completed an archaeological survey of a proposed locality for solution uranium mining wells in southeastern Webb County, Texas. This survey produced evidence of Middle Archaic to Late Archaic prehistoric sites in the area. Twelve archaeological sites were documented. Five of these sites, located in the proposed mining area, were totally collected and mapped. The other seven sites outside of the proposed mining area were mapped and only those sites with cultural/historical significance were collected. No …
