Beads As Chronological Indicators In West African Archaeology: A Reexamination, Christopher R. Decorse

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Drawing primarily on data obtained from recent excavations at Elmina, Ghana, this report examines the potential use of beads as temporal markers in West African archaeology. It is argued that although beads from West-African contexts are difficult to date, they provide more information than has previously been suggested. The Elmina beads are of particular interest as they can be closely dated by associated European trade materials. Preliminary results from the analysis of the 30,000 European and locally-made glass beads are discussed and findings from other West-African sites are evaluated.

Diakhité: A Study Of The Beads From An 18th-19th-Century Burial Site In Senegal, West Africa, Marie-José Opper, Howard Opper

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

It is the intention of this paper to place the Diakhité beads into a historical and archaeological perspective, and by so doing examine a period in Senegambian history that roughly extends from the 18th century to around the middle of the 19th century. The beads serve as a focal point to describe the trade that brought them from Europe and elsewhere to Senegambia. They also help portray some aspects of the lives of a particular ethnic group which inhabited the Thies area during this period- the Serer Nones.

Beads from four sites involved in Early Islamic trade (7th to 12th century) are representative of the role the Muslim world played in the Indian Ocean Bead Trade. The continuation of Classical techniques, the Islamic trade's self-sufficiency, and the insight beads provide concerning past behavior are some of the issues explored.

Archaeological excavations conducted on the Caribbean island of St. Eustatius over a seven-year period produced a wide array of 18th to early 20th-century beads of glass, coral and carnelian. Detailed descriptions of the recovered specimens are supplemented by information concerning their distribution, relative frequencies, color preference, temporal placement, origins, acquisition and use. Comparative site data are also provided.

In August and September 1986, personnel from Prewitt and Associates, Inc. conducted an inventory and assessment of cultural resources in five recreational area tracts above the conservation pool elevation of the proposed Stacy Reservoir in Concho, Coleman. and Runnels counties, Texas. These investigations were sponsored by the Colorado River Municipal Water District in compliance with federal requirements for a construction permit from the Corps of Engineers. Approximately 1,690 acres were surveyed. and five previously unrecorded sites were discovered and documented. Cairn feature sites 41CC213 and 41CC237 are deemed potentially significant and should be preserved or investigated to determine their significance …

Preliminary historical and archaeological investigation of the Robert Henry Seale farm residences (41RT362) utilizin g a metal detector and limited shovel testing indicate that a recent owner of the property removed both residential structures, destroying the site and extensively damaging any buried deposits. It is the estimation of the cultural resources staff of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation that the physical remains of the occupation of the property have been disrupted to such an extent that they now have no value in answering cultural- historical questions.

The State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) conducted archaeological testing on Site 41DW260 in DeWitt County during January 1988. The site is located along FM 3402 about 2.5 miles west of Cuero, Texas and extends from the north side of the highway onto private property. Testing has shown that the area within the right-of-way is a 20-25 cm deep prehistoric campsite where the primary activities were the reduction of fist-sized flint cobbles into usable flakes and the collection of freshwater mussels as a food resource. In January 1986, the Center for Archaeological Research entered into a contract to monitor construction for a sewer line for the San Antonio Wastewater Improvements Program. The primary concern was if the San Jose Acequia would be in the location of construction. Monitoring operations began in October of the same year and continued until January 1987. The acequia was exposed in three locations and proved to be an unlined ditch.

In April 1987, the authors monitored excavation of trenches for a drainage project in the area of North St. Mary's and Ashby Streets north of downtown San Antonio. The main concern was to observe and record the location and configuration of the Upper Labor Acequia in this area when it was crossed by trenching machines. A cross section of the acequia was recorded at the intersection of St. Mary's and Myrtle Streets.

In October 1986, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted limited test excavations at Mission Nuestra Senora de la Purisima Concepci6n (41 BX 12) for the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. The purpose of the excavations was to determine whether buried wall footings and occupation surfaces were preserved in an area where a drain pipe was proposed to be installed to carry rainwater away from the convento. In February 1986, test excavations were conducted outside the north wall of Mission San Juan Capistrano (41 BX 5). This testing was done to determine any potential impact of proposed City Water Board trenching activities on buried structural features. Although no structural remains were found, midden deposits were encountered. This report discusses the artifacts and the identified depositional strata of the midden.

Excavations at site 41 BX 1, located behind the Olmos Dam in San Antonio, Texas, were funded by the San Antonio River Authority. The excavations resulted in the documentation of a Late Archaic cemetery and Early to Late Transitional Archaic occupations. Thirteen human burials, accompanied by a variety of grave offerings, including deer antlers and marine shell ornaments, were radiocarbon dated 1680 B.C. (maximum date) to A.D. 260 (minimum date). In addition, two distinct occupational areas, horizontally separated from the cemetery, were investigated.

The State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) conducted archaeological testing along portions of FM 2790 near Elm Creek in southern Bexar County, Texas, in May 1988. Testing was performed to determine whether portions of the previously recorded prehistoric archaeological site of 41BX518 existed within the right-of-way near the drainage. Results of testing determined that 41BX518 existed beyond the right-of-way limits of the roadway and no subsurface deposits were identified. No further work is recommended within this portion of FM 2790 and a report of testing follows, including comments on natural soil deposits along this portion of the former …

Archaeological site 41GM23 was tested by the cultural resources staff of the Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) during the week of June 6,1988. The test revealed that, although the site has been disturbed by clearing and bulldozing, intact cultural deposits remained. The deposits were about 60 cm thick and contained a hearth and other evidence of prehistoric occupation. The cultural material recovered suggests that the site was occupied during the Early Ceramic and Late Archaic periods. The site is eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places, and for listing as a State Archaeological …

Archaeological Testing of 41KR243, the Camp Pearl Wheat Site, was performed between June 15 and June 20, 1988 by the Archaeology Section of the State Department of Highway and Public Transportation (SDHPT). The hand excavation of three 2 meter squares uncovered a hearth and a Martindale dart point from depths of 40 to 50 cm below the present surface. An additional hearth exposed in the road cut of FM 783 was uncovered and documented. Archaeological site 41KA87 was tested by the cultural resources staff of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) in September, 1987. Few prehistoric tools were found and well-defined features were lacking. Cultural deposits were about 50 cm thick and contained lithic debris, mussel shell, and other evidence of prehistoric occupation. The cultural material recovered suggests that site 41KA87 was occupied during the Late Archaic and Late Prehistoric periods. The site is not considered eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, and it is not recommended for listing as a State Archeological Landmark.

The State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) conducted archaeological tests on Site 41CI30 in Childress County in May 1988. The site is located about 1.5 miles south of Childress at the intersection of Scatterbranch Creek and a county road and covers about one acre in the northeast quadrant of the intersection. The majority of it is located on private property outside the jurisdiction of the SDHPT. Testing indicated that the site is a low density prehistoric campsite. Lithic debris was largely limited to the upper 20-30 cm of orange, sandy soils. A total of four 1 meter squares …
