Rock, Rap, And Rage: Which Genre Elicits Negative Emotional Contagion, Sarah Vinson
Rock, Rap, And Rage: Which Genre Elicits Negative Emotional Contagion, Sarah Vinson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Previous studies have analyzed the effects of the heavy metal and rap music genres, both together and separately, to study the music’s influence on aggressive behavior. A lack of studies analyzing the effect of one group against the other are available to assess which group it is that elicits higher negative emotional contagion. The current study is a follow-up to a pilot study conducted to assess whether it was heavy metal or rap music that elicited higher negative emotional contagion. Personality type using the 10-Item Big Five Inventory and the Trait Anger Scale allowed the researcher to compare several personality …

Hd R&D Field Evaluation: Rebel Crusher, U.S. Humanitarian Demining Research And Development
Global CWD Repository
The Rebel Crusher is a commercial mobile soil sifter and rock crushing plant modified for demining operations. It is designed to operate in areas where a significant fraction of the soil is composed of mine-sized objects (rocks) which make sifting difficult, or where dense metallic clutter makes mines undetectable. Modifications to the system include hardening the crushing chamber to withstand anti-personnel mine blasts, and increasing the capacity of the sifting mechanism. The Rebel Crusher is capable of processing 75-125 tons of soil per hour. Distribution Statement A: Approved for public release.

Thermal Features Vis A Vis Strain Features Of Fracturing Process In Jointed Rock Layer Under Concentrated Load, Haiqing Yang, Bolong Liu, Shivakumar Karekal
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
In case of earthquakes and crustal movement, the concentration of impounding load over a large region of crust can cause disturbances to the stratum. In order to quantitatively investigate crack initiation, propagation and coalescence processes of jointed stratum based on thermal variations caused by concentrated mechanical loading, a series of indention tests were performed on granite specimens. In the experiment, fracture process and resulting infrared radiation fields of specimens were respectively recorded by synchronized digital image correlation system and infrared camera. Then, thermal characteristics of mixed shear-tensile and tensile conical crack were analyzed. Experimental results indicate that the highlighted temperature …

Determination Of Stress State In Rock Mass Using Strain Gauge Probes Ccbo, Petr Waclawik, Stas Lubomir, Jan Nemcik, Petr Konicek, Tomas Kalab
Determination Of Stress State In Rock Mass Using Strain Gauge Probes Ccbo, Petr Waclawik, Stas Lubomir, Jan Nemcik, Petr Konicek, Tomas Kalab
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
The strain gauge probes of different construction are typically used for determination of stress state rock mass. The modified overcoring method known as the Compact Conical ended Borehole Overcoring method (CCBO) for stress state determination in rock mass was designed in Institute of Geonics of the CAS (IGN) in cooperation with Kumamoto University in Japan. The implemented adjustment of the overcoring method consists mainly in omitting the overcoring phase (stress relief phase). The probe is glued directly to the conically shaped end of a borehole. The data logger located within the conical probe enables continual strain monitoring directly in the …

Biaxial Creep Test Study On The Influence Of Structural Anisotropy On Rheological Behaviour Of Hard Rock, Chuangzhou Wu, Qingsheng Chen, Sudip Basack, Riqing Xu, Zhenming Shi
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Rheological characteristics are one of most important properties needed to be considered for the designing and construction for the long term stability and serviceability of underground structures in the rock mass. Up to date, although extensive studies on the rheological properties of rocks are available in the literature, most of existing studies reported the strain-time data for the axial deformation through compression rheological method and did not mention the lateral deformation, and mainly focused on the soft rocks at shallow depth. Thus, very limited attention has been paid to the rheological properties of deep and hard rock, neglecting the effects …
Into The Past: A Step Towards A Robust Kimberley Rock Art Chronology, June Ross, Kira E. Westaway, Meg Travers, Michael J. Morwood, John Hayward
Into The Past: A Step Towards A Robust Kimberley Rock Art Chronology, June Ross, Kira E. Westaway, Meg Travers, Michael J. Morwood, John Hayward
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
The recent establishment of a minimum age estimate of 39.9 ka for the origin of rock art in Sulawesi has challenged claims that Western Europe was the locus for the production of the world’s earliest art assemblages. Tantalising excavated evidence found across northern Australian suggests that Australia too contains a wealth of ancient art. However, the dating of rock art itself remains the greatest obstacle to be addressed if the significance of Australian assemblages are to be recognised on the world stage. A recent archaeological project in the northwest Kimberley trialled three dating techniques in order to establish chronological markers …

Rock Bolt Corrosion - An Experimental Study, Naj Aziz, P Craig, Jan Nemcik, Faisal Hai
Faisal I Hai
The effect of long term exposure of full size bolts to corrosive environments is presented. A special test rig was used to test four bolts under different loading conditions. Four X-grade identical profile bolts, each 21·7 mm core diameter (23·7 mm full diameter) were subjected to prolonged corrosion testing using acid sulphate water. The pH value of the circulated water varied between 3·4 and 4·3. The corrosion exposure test period lasted 3·5 years. Two bolts were axially loaded to 10 t and 20 t force respectively, the third bolt was subjected to a 360 Nm torsion load and the fourth …
Indie Rock And Mainstream Pop Are Thematically, Instrumentally, And Structurally Analogous, Sean D. Pritchard
Indie Rock And Mainstream Pop Are Thematically, Instrumentally, And Structurally Analogous, Sean D. Pritchard
Undergraduate Research Posters
Millennials have inconsistently defined indie rock since it was thrust onto the mainstream in 2004 with the breakout success of Modest Mouse’s Float On, Franz Ferdinand’s Take Me Out, and Zach Braff’s Garden State. Indie rock is not defined by its sound, thereby disqualifying it as a pure genre. Indie rock is defined by its aesthetic qualities: anti-mainstream appeal, style, promotion, etc. Indie rock is flexibly defined person to person as they perceive it. Consumers define indie rock by its themes being implicitly anti-mainstream and a less-produced sound while producers define indie rock by a musician’s creative control over the …
Fatigue Properties Of Intact Sandstone In Pre And Post-Failure And Its Implication To Vibratory Rock Cutting, M N. Badge, Shivakumar Karekal
Fatigue Properties Of Intact Sandstone In Pre And Post-Failure And Its Implication To Vibratory Rock Cutting, M N. Badge, Shivakumar Karekal
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
The pre-and post-failure fatigue properties of intact sandstone subjected to uni-axial cyclical loading in the laboratory is presented with its possible implication to vibratory rock cutting. The fatigue results subjected to sinusoidal, ramp and square waveforms at cyclic loading frequency of 5 Hz and peak amplitude of 0.05 mm is discussed herewith. It is observed that fatigue behaviour is a function of the dynamic energy of the load and the shape of the waveform. From the presented results, the practical significance of the behaviour of rock and rock masses within the excavation systems subjected to cyclic loads, especially in the …

Shear Behaviour Of Rock Joints With Unsaturated Infill, B Indraratna, Wuditha N. Premadasa, E. T. Brown
Buddhima Indraratna
Behaviour of soil-infilled rock joints has significant importance with respect to the strength of fractured rock mass. The presence of even a small amount of fine-grained infill material within a joint can reduce its shear strength considerably, depending on the degree of saturation of infill. Therefore, it is crucial to examine how the infill material can adversely affect the joint shear strength. Previous studies of infilled joints have mainly been focused on idealised regular joint patterns owing to the simplicity and reproducibility in laboratory testing. Current literature on infilled rock joints has also neglected the effect of the degree of …

Shear Strength Of Rock Joints Influenced By Compacted Infill, Buddhima Indraratna, Wuditha N. Premadasa, Edwin T. Brown, Antonio Gens, Ana Heitor
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Discontinuities such as fault planes, joints and bedding planes in a rock mass may be filled with different types of fine-grained material that are either transported or accumulated as gouge due to weathering or joint shearing. Previous laboratory studies have mainly examined the role of saturated infill that exhibits the minimum shear strength. However, in practice, the infill materials are often partially saturated generating matric suction within the joint that can contribute to increased shear strength. To the authors' knowledge this is the first study to examine the influence of compacted (unsaturated) infill on the joint shear strength. A series …

An Experimental And Simulated Investigation Of Particle Flow Through A Conveyor Rock Box, David B. Hastie
An Experimental And Simulated Investigation Of Particle Flow Through A Conveyor Rock Box, David B. Hastie
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
The use of rock boxes within conveyor transfers is not new, however, there is little published in the literature to aid in the design and implementation of rock boxes; instead mainly relying on prior knowledge and rules-of-thumb. A benefit of a rock box over other transfer types (e.g. soft loading chutes and impact plates) is their ability to capture material in such a way that it is only the initial feed of material which contacts chute walls or liners, with build-up of material creating a dominance of particle-particle interactions, thus reducing wear of the system and hence cost. This paper …

Influence Of Rock Depth On Seismic Site Classification For Shallow Bedrock Regions, P Anbazhagan, M. Neaz Sheikh, Aditya Parihar
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Seismic site classifications are used to represent site effects for estimating hazard parameters (response spectral ordinates) at the soil surface. Seismic site classifications have generally been carried out using average shear wave velocity and/or standard penetration test n-values of top 30-m soil layers, according to the recommendations of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) or the International Building Code (IBC). The site classification system in the NEHRP and the IBC is based on the studies carried out in the United States where soil layers extend up to several hundred meters before reaching any distinct soil-bedrock interface and may not …

From Modern Rock To Postmodern Hard Rock: Cambodian Alternative Music Voices, Linda Saphan
From Modern Rock To Postmodern Hard Rock: Cambodian Alternative Music Voices, Linda Saphan
Ethnic Studies Review
Cambodian modernity was driven by the political agenda of the Sihanouk government beginning in the 1950s, and Cambodian rock and roll emerged in the 1960s in step with Sihanouk's ambitious national modernization project. Urban rockers were primarily upper-class male youths. In. the postcolonial era rock and roll was appropriated from abroad and given a unique Cambodian sound, while today's emerging hard rock music borrows foreign sociocultural references along with the music. Postmodern Cambodia and its diaspora have seen the evolution of a more diverse music subculture of alternative voices of hard rock bands and hip-hop artists, as well as post-bourgeois …
Precarious Collaborations: A Study Of Interpersonal Conflict And Resolution Strategies In Local Rock Bands, Ryan Thomas
Precarious Collaborations: A Study Of Interpersonal Conflict And Resolution Strategies In Local Rock Bands, Ryan Thomas
Anthropology Department: Theses
Drawing upon interviews with 15 local musicians, related literature, and personal experience, this thesis examines the interpersonal conflicts experienced by local music bands, and accompanying methods of reconciliation. Despite extensive variation between bands, I have identified common agitators and resolution mechanisms. Disagreements often occur due to differing aspirations of the band members, the type of structure governing decision making, competition among members, criticism during songwriting, monetary issues, workload, and the age of a group’s members. Common methods of reconciliation and conflict prevention include encouragement of open communication, the ability to selectively ignore unsolvable disagreements, and active group mediation. More drastic …

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
The Ikkattoq gneisses of the Archaean gneiss complex in the Nuuk region, southern West Greenland, are the orthogneiss component within the amphibolite facies Tre Brodre terrane. They have mostly granodioritic compositions, with a small amount of quartz diorite. Sm-Nd isotopic data for a quartz diorite and five granodiorite Ikkattoq gneiss samples from within 5 km of the Ikkattoq (fjord) type locality yielded a regression with a slope equivalent to 2005 +/- 52 Ma (MSWD = 0.72). Regardless of the low MSWD, this cannot be the true age of the Ikkattoq gneisses, because all Ikkattoq gneisses yield U-Pb zircon dates of …

Performance Evaluation Test Of The Orbit Screen Model 68a And The Komplet Model 48-25 Rock Crusher, Ida, U.S. Humanitarian Demining Research And Development, Office Of The Assistant Secretary Of Defense Special Operations And Low-Intensity Conflict
Global CWD Repository
At the request of the Demining Center of Ecuador, the U.S. Humanitarian Demining Research and Development Program at Ft. Belvoir, VA., undertook a performance evaluation of the Orbit Screen Model 68A and the Model 48-25 Rock Crusher, two pieces of equipment that could be used to remove antipersonnel land mines from riverbank minefields along the border of Ecuador and Peru. Although these devices could conceivably be used in tandem as a system, this evaluation focused on the performance potential of each unit to operate as a stand-alone system. A test was also conducted to see how long it would take …
The Need For Standardization Of Aggregates For Concrete Production In Ethiopian Construction Industry, Abebe Dinku
The Need For Standardization Of Aggregates For Concrete Production In Ethiopian Construction Industry, Abebe Dinku
International Conference on African Development Archives
Concrete is one of the versatile and widely used building material in the world construction industry. Fine and coarse aggregates make about 70% by volume of concrete production. It goes without saying that the quality of concrete is thus strongly influenced by aggregate’s physical and mechanical properties as well as chemical composition of the parent aggregate making material. This calls for a critical identification and classification of aggregates so that they are used to meet the intended purpose.
In this article, the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of aggregates are reviewed. The sources and modes of production of coarse and …

Changing Ecological Concerns In Rock-Art Subject Matter Of North Australia's Keep River Region, Paul Tacon, Ken Mulvaney, Sven Ouzman, Richard L. Fullagar, Lesley M. Head, Paddy Carlton
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
The Keep River region has a complex body of engraved and painted rock-art, distinct from but with links to regions to the east, west and south. At least four major periods of figurative rock-art have been identified with differing subject matters and ages. Significant changes in depictions of human figures and animals are evident, reflecting shifts in emphasis associated with ecological concerns and environmental change. We flesh out the relative rock-art chronology by highlighting these changes, from worlds dominated by humans to those dominated by mammals and birds, and finally to a recent world of reptiles and humans. Symbolic aspects …
