Jurnal Administrasi Bisnis Terapan (JABT)

The importance of records cannot be overstated for a company or government body,as they can be compared to a critical organ or as the "heart" of the organization or institution, making decisions and as proof that perhaps a rules and regulation or program has been executed. Each agency's active records are, of course, created on a daily basis, when there's no records management, the amount of records will increase and turn into a jumble of paper. The National Archives of Indonesia or ANRI places a high value on record management. In order to establish wellmanaged and ordered documents that make …

Archiving Forward And Backward: Two Perspectives On Capturing The Impact Of Limited-Life Foundations, Lori Eaton, Phoebe Kowalewski Mar 2020

Archiving Forward And Backward: Two Perspectives On Capturing The Impact Of Limited-Life Foundations, Lori Eaton, Phoebe Kowalewski

The Foundation Review

Foundations that document their knowledge through an archives are creating a rich legacy of information. Archives preserve and provide access to the raw data that allow researchers to study and analyze grantmaking and its impact on people and communities.

Limited-life foundations may have an even greater incentive to capture their work in an archives: Once they close their doors, much institutional knowledge is lost. By examining two specific cases — the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, which began planning for its archives early it its work, and the Atlantic Philanthropies, which began the process later — this article discusses what …

Mission-Driven Recordkeeping: The Need For Rim Staff In U.S. Nonprofit Organizations, Emily Mercer

School of Information Student Research Journal

As a robust and growing industry, often with strong ties to communities served, there is much potential for nonprofit organizations to harness powerful and rich databases of cultural information not found in any other sector. Yet research shows that in most cases, nonprofit organizations operate on limited budgets, tight deadlines, and may see the task of properly managing records as counter-productive to the mission of the organization. This research examines the systems of recordkeeping in nonprofit organizations in the U.S. and argues that record keeping staff must be considered an essential component for a nonprofit organization to survive and thrive.

A Change Would Do You Good: Transforming Archives With Cross-Sector Perspectives, Kayla Harris Mar 2018

A Change Would Do You Good: Transforming Archives With Cross-Sector Perspectives, Kayla Harris

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

The various “sectors” of archives and related professions, whether functional or institutional, increasingly diverge from each other in priorities, strategies, and constituencies. For the archivist or records manager changing positions across sectors, however, an opportunity exists to bring skills and insights learned in previous field(s) to transform the work being done in these new places. Cross-sector experiences also give archivists and records managers an opportunity to reflect on how their transitions have transformed their outlook on the profession as a whole, and their role within it. In this lightning round session, eight archivists will share how prior experience in a …

“No Rhyme Or Reason:” Surveying Legislative Records Retention Practices In The U.S. House Of Representatives, Nahali R. Croft Jan 2018

“No Rhyme Or Reason:” Surveying Legislative Records Retention Practices In The U.S. House Of Representatives, Nahali R. Croft

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Because the records of individual Members of the House of Representatives are considered personal property, what happens to those records once a Member leaves office is up to him or her. Legislative records, particularly files and reports used to develop policy and draft bills, have historical value and are one of the types of files most used in current Congressional collections, as they point toward legislative intent. The House Records Management Manual for Members suggests that offices permanently maintain these types of files. This study reveals to what extent House offices are preserving records that provide future researchers with legislative …

Learning From Data: Using Technology To Gain Deeper Meaning From Archives, Emily Mercer Dec 2017

Learning From Data: Using Technology To Gain Deeper Meaning From Archives, Emily Mercer

Emily Mercer

With a proliferation of information in the 21st century, new tools are necessary for deriving
meaning from the information in archival repositories and recordkeeping programs. With
embracing distant learning techniques such as data and text mining, and visualization projects
archivists, records managers, and researchers can learn in a deeper way. Examining archival
tradition and more recent Archives 2.0 initiatives, this essay posits that this meaningful learning
best occurs by embracing new technology. Only then will the ideals of interactivity and
decentralized authority be realized.

Managing Patron-Driven Acquisitions (Pda) Records In A Multiple Model Environment, Daniel C. Draper Oct 2013

Managing Patron-Driven Acquisitions (Pda) Records In A Multiple Model Environment, Daniel C. Draper

Daniel Draper

Academic libraries have widely embraced patron-driven acquisition (PDA) models for electronic and print books. Vendors supply title level MARC records to facilitate discovery through library catalogs, and managing these records can be challenging. Colorado State University Libraries (CSUL) implemented four PDA models over the past two years. Since these records constitute a growing portion of the collection, CSUL recognizes the importance of developing careful record management policies and workflows to handle various acquisitions models. In this article the author describes the four PDA models, the cataloging policies and processes, and staffing levels needed for managing the records.

Shining A Light On The Digital Dark Ages, Meg Miner Sep 2013

Shining A Light On The Digital Dark Ages, Meg Miner

Meg Miner

“What is digital preservation?” “Why should I worry? Storage options are cheap and everywhere!”
This is the spirit of the responses digital preservationists typically hear if not the actual words. Following a year of interviews and investigations, I can attest that our community shares these beliefs. Personal and institutional practices of collecting digital objects often indicate that people are unaware of the fragility of digital media and unconcerned about longevity of access.
IWU is one of five participating institutions researching digital preservation options for small- to medium-sized college and university libraries. Our involvement as part of a two-year National Leadership …

Collecting Campus Culture: Collaborations And Collisions, Meg Miner, Stephanie Davis-Kahl Sep 2012

Collecting Campus Culture: Collaborations And Collisions, Meg Miner, Stephanie Davis-Kahl

Meg Miner

From the 2007 implementation of Illinois Wesleyan University’s institutional repository (IR), an archivist and special collections librarian and a scholarly communications librarian have worked on its development and expansion from each position’s unique perspective. They have found themselves united on some fronts, but divided at times on big picture questions such as the definition of campus culture and the extent to which the IR should contain products of that culture, how best to describe and structure collections, and who should be responsible for certain collections. Through regular dialogue on these concerns and efforts to understand each other’s perspective, the colleagues’ …

In 2007, a library at a small liberal arts college jumpstarted two initiatives that set two colleagues on a parallel path to collecting, archiving and digitizing campus content, such as student and faculty scholarship and creative works, internal publications, minutes of key committees, historical information, and other materials. An archivist and special collections librarian and a scholarly communications librarian, were tasked, respectively, with creating and implementing a records management program and a scholarly communications program, including coordination of a new …
