Exploring The Effectiveness Of A Life-Skills Program In A Florida Prison Through A Social Bond And General Strain Theory Perspective, Danielle M. Thomas
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Prison programs have existed for decades; however, recent attention towards prison reform has raised awareness of the importance of correctional education. Research has shown that many of these programs are highly effective for incarcerated individuals in that program participation is likely to decrease recidivism and increase post-release employment success. Using in-depth interviews with 40 currently incarcerated men – 20 of whom participated in a 2-year prison program (the LIFERS program) and 20 who did not – and matched institutional records for visitation and disciplinary infractions, this study expands on the current research by assessing additional measures of program efficacy, including …

Providing Access With Bookmobiles: A Chapter In The History Of Georgia Libraries, Rebecca J. Hunnicutt
Providing Access With Bookmobiles: A Chapter In The History Of Georgia Libraries, Rebecca J. Hunnicutt
Georgia Library Quarterly
Providing access to information is one mission of libraries and librarians. Programs and outreach are important aspects of accomplishing this mission. The implementation of the bookmobile program in the United States in the early 1900s provided access to those who couldn’t easily travel to a library. There are many people, then and now, who struggle to access libraries and the valuable resources libraries provide. Those people are the benefiters of the utilization of this innovative idea. Bookmobiles were valuable programs in the early 1900s and continue to be a useable and needed program today.

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Expanding a nonprofit organization (NPO) can be beneficial to the community; however, such expansion comes with challenges, including finding ways to obtain additional funding and understanding which additional services to provide. A single-case study was conducted to explore the challenges facing a nonprofit behavioral health organization as it seeks to obtain funding to expand current services and identify new services for underserved communities. Data were collected through interviews with the behavioral health leader (BHL) and five staff members using the Baldrige excellence framework. Five themes emerged from the data analysis: access, programs, services, funding, workforce, and leadership. Although leadership was …

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)
In 2017 the Office of Widening Participation conducted a program- wide analysis of the Social Return On Investment (SROI) to evaluate the impact of four Widening Participation programs at Western Sydney University (WSU). The programs evaluated were Fast Forward, Strive Towards Educational Participation and Success (STEPS), First Foot Forward, and Pasifika Achievement To Higher Education (PATHE). The overlapping aim amongst the four programs is to increase higher education participation rates, particularly for students coming from low socio-economic backgrounds. The SROI framework provided a holistic analysis by intertwining qualitative and quantitative data. The analysis showed that each program-albeit with differences-produced a …

The Perceived Effectiveness Of Community Programs In Reducing And Deterring Juvenile Delinquency, Susan Michelle Newton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Indianapolis, the capital of the U.S. state of Indiana, continues to experience a high rate of offenses committed by juvenile offenders. Community programs are in place to assist in the deterrence and/or reduction of juvenile crimes, yet the city’s crime rate continues to increase with youth being the perpetrator of many of these crimes. The purpose of this study was to determine the perceived effectiveness of these programs, which has not been adequately studied. The research questions focused on identifying which of the city’s current programs are perceived as being effective or ineffective in reducing juvenile delinquency and why so. …
The Effectiveness Of African American Male Faith-Based Juvenile Delinquency, Dewaun C. Martin
The Effectiveness Of African American Male Faith-Based Juvenile Delinquency, Dewaun C. Martin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The Southeast region of the United States is experiencing an increase in the amount of crime in the African American community particularly among juveniles. Furthermore, the rate of African American juveniles being arrested is higher than arrest rates among other races. This problem reveals the need for reformation and rehabilitation programs to reduce recidivism in the juvenile justice system. Research indicates that juveniles who have attachments to a conventional institution commit fewer delinquent acts. Although attachments to sports and other programs are positively associated with the social bond theory, it was unclear what aspects of the church program might influence …

In Summer of 2020, the University of South Dakota worked with the Post-Landfill Action Network (PLAN) to support Anna Moore, the Campus Recycling Coordinator and a graduate student in the Department of Sustainability & Environment, to conduct a holistic assessment of the campus’ waste management system. Anna used PLAN’s Zero Waste Atlas Program, a program designed to help campuses assess and streamline campus systems for materials management, to collect the information used to inform this report. This abridged report offers a snapshot of existing policy, programs, and infrastructure, illustrates ideal material flows throughout a campus, and proposes a few broad …
From Reformatories, To Today, And Into The Future: What Needs To Change For Female Offenders, Alyson Berry
From Reformatories, To Today, And Into The Future: What Needs To Change For Female Offenders, Alyson Berry
Senior Honors Projects
In society, and within the criminal justice system, women have always been deemed insignificant and many of their problems have been neglected. Even as time has progressed, convicted women's physical and mental needs are still disregarded as well as their motivation, risk, and recidivism rates. Since the late 1800s, the number of incarcerated women has risen. This indicates a need for change in the current system to decrease the population of female offenders and their likelihood of becoming repeat offenders. In order to determine what aspects have worked and which ones need to be revised, different time periods need to …
Youth Prevention Programs: A Framework For Conducting Mediation Meta-Analyses, Morgan A. Kawamura
Youth Prevention Programs: A Framework For Conducting Mediation Meta-Analyses, Morgan A. Kawamura
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Often for prevention program designs, researchers are interested in understanding the processes through which a program impacts a targeted outcome. Mediation analysis assists in identifying not only how a program influences an outcome, but also which intermediate variables (i.e., mediators) cause the effects between a program and an outcome to occur. Mediation analysis explains why a program works, which is useful for program developers in creating effective prevention and intervention-based programs.
To make use of mediation analysis findings for preventive intervention programs, researchers need a comprehensive understanding of the mediators between various programs and outcomes. However, a comprehensive examination into …
Child Support Compliance In Fatherhood Programs: The Role Of Hope, Role Salience, And Parenting Skills, Alexander E. Chan, Francesca Adler-Baeder
Child Support Compliance In Fatherhood Programs: The Role Of Hope, Role Salience, And Parenting Skills, Alexander E. Chan, Francesca Adler-Baeder
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Non-resident fathers’ compliance with child support agreements is low. An estimated 50% of fathers never pay any formal support to their co-parents (Stykes, Manning, & Brown, 2013). Responsible fatherhood programs have been developed as an alternative to incarceration to provide parenting and other skills to fathers in the hopes of increasing their payment compliance. This study adds to the sparse literature on the evaluation of responsible fatherhood programs by quantitatively examining the role of hope, parenting role salience, and parenting skills in predicting changes in child support compliance attitudes. The sample was drawn from participants in community-based responsible fatherhood programs. …
