In The Doha International Airport, A Forest, Paulina Bianca Ocampo
In The Doha International Airport, A Forest, Paulina Bianca Ocampo
Green Humanities: A Journal of Ecological Thought in Literature, Philosophy & the Arts
In the Doha International Airport, a forest calls is a poem about a culture of deep ecology in a context of coloniality, brain drain, and my own part in it. Despite over 300 years of colonization in the Philippines and the colonization of our own education system, a certain deep ecology continues to thrive in the belief of spirits in nature. Among Filipinos, even in the thick of the Anthropocene, a sense of respect and fear for nature continues to exist. It is common, for example, for Filipinos to ask these spirits for permission to pass through forested areas. However, …

Paul Celan And The Processes Of Survival In Post-Shoah Jewish Writing, Ari Savage
Paul Celan And The Processes Of Survival In Post-Shoah Jewish Writing, Ari Savage
Theses
The following is a study of the poetry of Paul Celan as a representation of psychological and social processes present in the written works of Shoah survivors. It begins with an analysis of the place of writing in Jewish culture, then identifies three primary processes which operate in sequence: alienation, individuation, and integration. By examining Paul Celan’s highly personal and autobiographical texts in the context of his life experience as a Shoah survivor it is possible to discern the social and psychological forces at work which compel survivors to express their traumas in written form, and to gain a better …

Creation Of A Southwestern Authors Archive: Revisiting The Laverne Harrell Clark Collection Ten Years Later, Erin R. Wahl, Pamela Pierce, Wendy Burk, Julie Swarstad Johnson, Sarah Kortemeier
Journal of Western Archives
This article details the processing of the LaVerne Harrell Clark Photographic Collection by University of Arizona Poetry Center librarians, archivists, and interns, and the current status and next steps of the collection. The LaVerne Harrell Clark Photographic Collection, which contains thousands of portraits and candids of poets taken circa 1960-2000 by LaVerne Harrell Clark, the Poetry Center’s first director, is deeply entwined with the Poetry Center’s institutional identity. In addition, the authors explored ways in which the collection and the institution as a whole are positioned as uniquely Western and also of national significance. Those processing the collection became interested …

The Middle Of The Middle: Purgatory, Pilgrimage, And Human And Plant Mobility In A Time Of Climate Crisis, Stephen S. Collis
The Goose
This paper, adapted from a talk given for the Institute of the Humanities at Simon Fraser University on April 26 2023, explores intersecting issues taken up by an in-progress long poem I am currently writing. That long poem, “The Middle,” explores questions of climate displacement, migration, and refuge via a writing-though of Dante’s Purgatorio—itself a poem of pilgrimage. A further context for both the poem and the paper about the poem is an ongoing project of walking in solidarity with refugees, asylum seekers, and immigration detainees that the author has been involved with since 2015. In seeking to “override …

In an 1870 letter, Emily Dickinson described poetry this way: “If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can ever warm me, I know that is poetry. If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry. These are the only way I know it. Is there any other way?” During the twentieth century, the Russian poet Anna Akhmatova wrote poetry that embodies Dickinson’s intense definition. My …
Development, Line By Line: An Introspective Case Study On Narrative Identity And Development Through Poetry, Milla Miller
Development, Line By Line: An Introspective Case Study On Narrative Identity And Development Through Poetry, Milla Miller
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
Situated at the intersection of creative writing and psychology, this project analyzes the author’s adolescent poetry alongside her current work to explore psychosocial and narrative identity development. Specifically, the work contrasts poems written about developmental stages in process with those written in reflection of previous stages in order to reveal how the understanding of self evolves. In addition to the complexities revealed by these temporal differences, structural elements unique to the poems provide further levels of understanding: choice of form and figurative dexterity show cognitive and narrative advancement; themes reveal psychosocial conflicts; and repetition across a poetic lifespan identifies the …

When Words Weave Wings: Just Beyond The Bars, Barbara Bethea
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
Narrative and storytelling creates a formidable foundation for individuals to convey their lived experiences. Utilizing indigenous arts-based research (ABR), poetics as an inquiring and exploratory tool, and an ABR interviewing technique called poetic emergence by the researcher, this study asked two essential questions: What are the lived experiences of individuals in and outside of carceral states? Will these experiences reflect certain aspects of an individual’s life journey? The purpose of this study was to explore the embodied voices and lived experiences of adult Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC), diagnosed with mental health issues who were formerly incarcerated (n=3) …

By applying the mixed research methods combining new historicism and digital humanities with AntConc-assisted distant reading techniques, this research aims to explore a reconstruction of Jakarta's history offered in From Batavia to Jakarta (1619–1999), a collection of poems by Zeffry J. Alkatiri. Results show that history can be reconstructed through the physical structure of narrative poetry represented by the dominant usage of pronoun "they" and intra-sentence conjunctions and prepositions such as "and", "in", and "the" instead of licentia poetica which can violate language rules. However, in the structural analysis, AntConc was not able to detect several linguistic aspects such …

New Commandments, Jacob Sussman
New Commandments, Jacob Sussman
Masters Theses
I reach into the earth, pull out mud-encrusted objects, and recombine them to define new meanings. With every object transposed, the past breaks down; new potentials form. “New Commandments” recombines historical symbolism through an intuitive building, destroying, and merging to reimagine or re-establish meaning.
The work critiques rites of passage, masculinity, and stereotypes by deconstructing how histories, ideologies, and preconceptions form.
As a queer person raised in-between Judaism and Christianity, social preconceptions and religious expectations festered my formation. Our choice is taken away at this moment of conception. To take back autonomy, I reimagine historical, and religious symbolism and transmute …

Perspectives On (In)Human(E) Displacement And Migration, Jordan Carey
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
This interdisciplinary, multimedia document gathers various media pertaining to human displacement and migration. The collected perspectives take the form of poetry, academic research, books, photography, as well as un-sortable multimedia projects. Depending on the source, they are cited, introduced, quoted, summarized and/or analyzed. These sources are connected by their enactment of creative resistance, authenticity, proximity to lived experience with displacement and migration, and dedication to uplift the very truths silenced by colonialism and every intersecting mode of oppression that seeks to control and dominate. These truths are that every single human seeking asylum is a capable, resilient, intelligent, self-reliant, creative, …

Gertrude Stein Among The Cubist Poets, Yasmeen Abdulraheem Alsajee, Hamdi Hameed Aldouri
Journal of STEPS for Humanities and Social Sciences
Gertrude Stein was born on February 3, 1874, in Allegheny, Pennsylvania (which amalgamated with Pittsburgh in 1907) to upper-class German parents, Daniel and Amelia Stein. Large portion Gertrude Stein's popularity stems from a modest contemporary art gallery she co-founded with her brother Leo Stein from 1904 until 1913.When she moved to Paris, she admired of the Cubist Movement and especially the works of Pablo Picasso. This research deals with Gertrude Stein and her position among the cubist poets. Evaluating The Prevalence And Dimensions Of Poetry Interventions To Enable Change And Transformation In Organizations, Elizabeth Kathleen Mcgraw
Evaluating The Prevalence And Dimensions Of Poetry Interventions To Enable Change And Transformation In Organizations, Elizabeth Kathleen Mcgraw
Theses and Dissertations
Today, organizations and their employees operate in times of increased complexity, ambiguity, and constant change. Traditional methods for enabling change and transformation are no longer sufficient to generate alignment and shared understanding to create adaptive ways of working. Organizations must identify new tools when engaged in change and transformation. Poetry, a time-honored practice, is an unconventional choice for organizational interventions. Still, it may be a solution for organizations seeking to unstick, reframe, and pivot quickly toward a new and shared reality. This study evaluated the practice and dimensions of poetry interventions used by change practitioners when enabling change and transformation …

The Poetic Rhythm Of The Artistic Prose In The Ages Of Sects And The Almoravide, Suha Mashriqi
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
This research investigates the poetic rhythm of the artistic prose in the ages of the sects and the Almoravids, by analyzing and interpreting all forms of prose prevalent at the time; including letters, debates, translations, and speeches.
The importance of this research lies in tackling the poetic rhythm in this period in two main forms; namely assonance, and alliteration, as researchers have not deeply investigated this aspect and its impact on the artistic prose.
It is hoped that this research will constitute a valuable addition to the collection of literary studies concerned with prose at this time.
This research has …

Covid-19 Pandemic And Special Education Teacher Voices, Rama Cousik
The Qualitative Report
The pandemic caused by COVID-19 created havoc in schools across the world as it necessitated school closures and lockdowns, and/or a sudden switch to an online mode of learning. Although all children and teachers were adversely affected, children with disabilities faced additional problems. Special education teachers bore the burden of having to continue providing high quality special education in the face of these challenges. In this paper, I present findings from a survey of special education teachers through use of qualitative and arts-based research technics.

Thoughts, Feelings, Actions; The Brevity Of Being: A Haiku Method, Scott Medeiros
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The difficulties of delivering clinical services during the pandemic showed that there was a need for interventions that were able to be adapted to virtual sessions. In addition, lack of training and expertise regarding specialized therapies require modern day clinicians to be able to synergize current theory with the reality of the mental health landscape. In this study, 19 individuals participated in a psychoeducation group that taught a therapeutic thought mapping technique that was then adapted towards the creation of a haiku. It was noticed that participants were able to learn a psychological concept, apply it towards their life, create …

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This article explores chronic poetics, through my personal lens I take readers on a walk- through of poetry and the discussions surrounding chronic illnesses. I examine the current state of chronic illness and the nuances to its discussion. I analyze chronic illness in the context of disability studies, and touch on the tensions of categorizing chronic illness as a disability. As well as how to best navigate reading chronic poetics, as poets engage in new territories as they form a new language to describe their circumstances. While analyzing multiple poems from different authors, I explore why specifically the vessel of …

The 3 poems included here are from a collection written between January and August 2020. Adoration Above Objectification: The Promotion Of Other In Black, Mexican And Arabic Love Poetry, Joycelynn L. Baker
Adoration Above Objectification: The Promotion Of Other In Black, Mexican And Arabic Love Poetry, Joycelynn L. Baker
Honors Projects
This paper analyzes the philosophical fundamentals of sexual objectification and presents opposing literature, written in the 20th century, by Black, Mexican and Arabic male poets in contrast. In vigorous patriarchal environments that provide more opportunities to practice sexual objectification, the poets reframe male metaphysical perception and behavior in romantic or sexual contexts by promoting the autonomy and agency of women above themselves, and displaying their enjoyment of that situation. This paper will discuss how Western metaphysical philosophy impacts self-perception and belief in contemporary romantic contexts.
