Open Your Research Without Opening Your Wallet, Janelle L. Wertzberger
Janelle Wertzberger
Open scholarship promotes sharing and collaboration, increases readership, and amplifies impact. It is gaining traction as institutions, professional associations, and funding agencies encourage or require broad sharing of research results. Yet many authors believe that the only way to open their work is to pay publishers thousands of dollars for the privilege. Luckily for us, that just isn’t the case. Come hear about a range of ways to open your research without paying for the privilege! Lunch provided. (Limited seating, RSVP to jwertzbe@gettysburg.edu)

Panel title: Staffing a Library Publishing Program: The Whos, Hows, and Whens Panel abstract: This session aims to address one of the most frequently raised concerns about library-led publishing: how to plan for staffing this new endeavor? Small School, Big Reach: #11;Open Access Outreach On A Liberal Arts College Campus, Janelle L. Wertzberger
Janelle Wertzberger
The liberal arts college environment provides opportunities for campus-wide engagement of open access issues that may differ from those at larger institutions. Because we support fewer campus authors, we are able to provide a high level of service. Librarians’ close connections with faculty and students allow us to move beyond articles and theses and solicit a wide range of scholarly and creative works to share in our repository. In addition, we’ve fostered conversations about open access, open textbooks, altmetrics, and copyright among faculty, staff, and students. This poster will present a snapshot of a variety of outreach and education strategies …

The road to a successful institutional repository is a long and involved one - so where would an interested library begin? What are some important initial considerations? What options exist for repository platforms? Eric Jeitner will discuss some of those considerations, as well as the methodology used to decide on the staging for Arcadia University's ScholarWorks repository.
After picking a platform, decisions must be made about what work belongs in your IR, and why. How can librarians build campus awareness about open access? Who should be promoting your IR? Janelle Wertzberger will talk about the education and outreach efforts that …

Should My Research Be Open Access? Perspectives From Gettysburg Faculty Authors, Janelle Wertzberger
Should My Research Be Open Access? Perspectives From Gettysburg Faculty Authors, Janelle Wertzberger
Janelle Wertzberger
Academia is abuzz about open access. The U.S. government has mandated that some federally-funded research be made freely available, faculty at various institutions have been adopting their own OA mandates, and some academic societies and their journals have adopted open access policies. Many Gettysburg College faculty are joining in the conversation—and taking action—by making traditionally-published scholarship available in our open access institutional repository, The Cupola, or publishing directly in open access journals. In this Friday Faculty Luncheon, Dan DeNicola, Darren Glass, and Julia Hendon will discuss their experiences with OA publishing and how it has impacted the reach of their …

On With The Show! Open Access Publishing As A Local Production, Janelle Wertzberger

What do I need to know to launch an institutional repository at my school or continue growing the one I already have? How do I talk to my provost, faculty, administration, and library staff about the IR? Where will funding and staffing come from and how do I ensure their stability? Most institutional repository managers have likely asked themselves these questions at some point, and while the answers vary from institution to institution, many widely applicable best practices have still emerged. A successful institutional repository manager has to be a jack-of-all-trades: someone who has a vision for the services the …

Chapter One: A Small College Library Joins The Open Access Movement, Janelle L. Wertzberger
Janelle Wertzberger
The open access movement has been going strong for over a decade. Large research universities tend to have the oldest and most active programs. Their work is inspiring, but it can be challenging for librarians at smaller institutions to identify ways to contribute to the movement. Gettysburg College launched its institutional repository in 2012. This presentation tells how we got started.
