Finding aid only for Folklife Archives Project 657. Collection features documentation on the "Always a River" exhibit sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities as well as the Humanities Councils of the six states whose boundaries touch the Ohio River. The exhibit demonstrated the relationship between the individual and the environment. One exhibit was featured on a barge that traveled from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Cairo, Illinois in 1991.

This collection documents the exhibit's creation process from 1989 to 1992. The exhibit was made available initially to town halls and libraries in counties along to Kentucky River, and then traveled across the state through the "Museums to Go" program of the Kentucky Historical Society.

Summative Evaluation Of The High School Financial Planning Program In Rural Kentucky, Ryan R. Setari

The purpose of this summative program evaluation was to determine if the High School Financial Planning Program (HSFPP) impacts the financial literacy of Kentucky high school students. The HSFPP is a national financial education program used by Kentucky public schools with the goal of improving financial literacy of participants. This evaluation is the first to use a one-group pre-test and post-test design to determine if the target group’s financial literacy is impacted by participation in the program. The results found that students’ financial literacy, and knowledge of specific components related to financial literacy, were impacted by participation. The results imply …

Redefining Development: Exploring Alternative Economic Practices In Appalachia, Amanda Fickey

This dissertation examines alternative economic practices and regional economic development strategies in the Appalachian region. First, I deconstruct regional economic development policies and practices. I argue that policy documents produced by the Appalachian Regional Commission and the State of Kentucky have often limited economic imaginings through the perpetuation of regional stereotypes and short-term, decontextualized strategies. Then, I explore the existence of alternative economic practices as well as the contradictory role of the state within the context of Eastern Kentucky’s craft industry. Using a mixed methods approach, I investigate how the state simultaneously supports cooperative craft production by perpetuating a geographical …

This paper examines the effect of various input measures upon student outcomes within Kentucky public high schools from 2001 to 2004, using a pooled, cross­ sectional time series research design with panel-coIlected standard errors (PCSE). The results indicate mixed support for the proposition that school resources are related to desired school outcomes. Overall school spending seems to have no systematic impact Schools that seem to perform well have few indigent students, many teachers with master's degrees, and fairly high numbers of volunteers. Appalachia has long experienced economic distress, but significant progress has been made since the establishment of the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) in the 1960s. However, many counties in central Appalachia continue to experience persistent economic distress despite several advantages that are normally conducive to progress. This study examines Rowan County, Kentucky in comparison to four other rural Kentucky counties with varying degrees of economic progress. Quantitative comparisons were made on the basis of out-migration, educational attainment, and industrial diversity. Qualitative data was then gathered till·ough interviews to understand decisive events that affected progress as well as long-term causes of change …

This paper is an examination of the determinants of Family Support employee allocation. Specifically, related to Kentucky, the goal of this research is to determine if public assistance caseloads are equitable across nine geographic regions. A review of relevant literature provides a larger context to this topic. Literature primarily suggests three mechanisms by which Family Support resources might be allocated: legal regulations, postcode lottery, and Tiebout migration.

Horse racing is a well-known sport and the part of the horse industry best known to the public; however, there is little information on the health status and health needs of people who work in this business. Past research shows that the thoroughbred worker population faces a myriad of health challenges. Swanberg et al. (2013) studied demographics, working conditions, and health of Latinos who work on thoroughbred farms in the United States by analyzing phone interviews, face-to-face interviews, and injury logs. The majority of injuries in this study are general injuries such as getting kicked or injuring fingers.
