Sustainable development goals, or SDGs, are still difficult to realize, especially the goal of ending poverty in all its forms. The Covid-19 pandemic, which has been around for more than a year, has actually exacerbated the condition of poverty in the community. In the city of Makassar, the poverty rate increased dramatically from 4.1 percent to 7.2 percent during 2020 (Makassar Ministry of Social Affairs data). Ironically, the poor who live on islands such as the people of Kodingareng, Barrang Lompo, Barrang Caddi, Lumu-Lumu, Laikang and others, are now getting poorer because of the Covid-19 outbreak. Therefore, this paper seeks …
Early Life Stress Inoculation Effects On Adult Behaviors, Oreoluwa Ibukunolupo Akinbo
Early Life Stress Inoculation Effects On Adult Behaviors, Oreoluwa Ibukunolupo Akinbo
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Chronic and acute stressors are implicated in mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety and posttraumatic disorder. These adulthood disorders may be influenced by stressor exposure during early life. However, controlled mild stressors are linked to the building of resiliency towards later intense stressors. Previously, rodent models have been used to investigate the resilience-promoting effects of early life stress inoculation protocols. For example, the presentation of mild stressors (such as an experimenter handling a rodent for brief periods of time) or exposure to environmental enrichment (such as a presenting a variety of items and activities in the home cage of a …

The primary cause of this accident is listed as a ‘Field control inadequacy’ because the person in charge at the site had decided to move fuzed explosive hazards and did not enforce safety distances that would have reduced the casualty toll in the event of an accident.
The secondary cause is listed as ‘Inadequate training’, because, while all of the victims had extensive experience, it seems that their training had not prepared them to conduct this task safely.
It is surprising that five ex-pat specialists who had been supervising the teams of national deminers who found the mines should have …

Mine explodes when Australian military trainers were working with Cambodian colleagues 50km from Phnom Penh. An Australian and a Cambodian were killed and a second Australian injured when a landmine was accidentally detonated during a military training exercise west of Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The primary cause of this accident is listed as a ‘Management control inadequacy’ because either the base was being used for training that the senior management did not know about or it was being used to allow tourists to fire weapons, which the senior management did not know about. Either way, the senior management failed to retain …

Priests' Perceptions Of The Leadership Styles Of U.S. Catholic Bishops, Aloysius Okey Ndeanaefo
Priests' Perceptions Of The Leadership Styles Of U.S. Catholic Bishops, Aloysius Okey Ndeanaefo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The United States Catholic bishops have used their authority to address the child sexual abuse scandal, but it has been problematic that no one has yet evaluated their exercised leadership styles. In this phenomenological study, I explored U.S Catholic priests' perceptions of the bishops' leadership styles related to how they handled the child sexual abuse scandal. Knowing the bishops' leadership styles was paramount to fill the research gap. The theoretical frameworks underpinning this study were transformational leadership, transactional leadership, charismatic leadership, and servant leadership. Data collected through interviews with 11 Catholic priests revealed their perceptions of how the behavioral characteristics …

A Sensor Fault Detection Strategy For Air Handling Units Using Cluster Analysis, Rui Yan, Zhenjun Ma, Georgios Kokogiannakis, Yang Zhao
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Sensors are an essential component in the control systems of air handling units (AHUs). A biased sensor reading could result in inappropriate control and thereby increased energy consumption or unsatisfied indoor thermal comfort. This paper presents an unsupervised learning based strategy using cluster analysis for AHU sensor fault detection. The historical data recorded from sensors is first pre-processed to reduce the dimensions using principal component analysis (PCA). The clustering algorithmOrdering Points to Identify the Clustering Structure (OPTICS) is then employed to identify the spatial separated data groups (i.e. clusters),which possibly indicate the occurrence of sensor faults. The data points in …

Laboratory Routines Cause Animal Stress, Jonathan P. Balcombe, Neal D. Barnard, Chad Sandusky
Jonathan Balcombe, PhD
Eighty published studies were appraised to document the potential stress associated with three routine laboratory procedures commonly performed on animals: handling, blood collection, and orogastric gavage. We defined handling as any non-invasive manipulation occurring as part of routine husbandry, including lifting an animal and cleaning or moving an animal's cage. Significant changes in physiologic parameters correlated with stress (e.g., serum or plasma concentrations of corticosterone, glucose, growth hormone or prolactin, heart rate, blood pressure, and behavior) were associated with all three procedures in multiple species in the studies we examined. The results of these studies demonstrated that animals responded with …

Practical Handling Skills During Road Transport Of Fattening Pigs From Farm To Slaughterhouse: A Brief Review, Bert Driessen, Ester Peeters, Jos Van Thielen, Sanne Van Beirendonck
Transport of Farm Animals Collection
The transport of fattening pigs is characterized by a strong human-animal interaction. Consequent handling is important because of animal welfare, meat quality and matching economic consequences. During road transport, human impact can be divided in different steps: 1) driving pigs from the pens via an alley to the trailer, 2) loading, 3) actual transport, 4) unloading to the lairage, and 5) the final phase driving pigs to the stunning. An inadequate design and a poor condition of the facilities will negatively affect the ease of handling pigs. Because of the consequences, acute stress during transport and slaughter should be minimized …

The four Explosive Ordnance Disposal Marines were clearing the range of unexploded ordnance and consolidating it as part of an annual training exercise, according to a Marine report about the results of the investigation. The Marines moved 40-millimeter rounds into one area surrounding an M60 105-millimeter white phosphorous round that could not be safely moved, the investigation found. They were moving rounds from the consolidation point to the demolition pit when one of the rounds exploded in the demolition pit, causing the other 40- millimeter rounds at the consolidation point and the demolition pit to explode, the investigation found.

It is very dangerous to assume or extrapolate anything when it comes to bulk material properties and behaviour. Traditional methods for flow prediction, such as hand calculation or even just relying on past experience, require assumptions to be made about the bulk material properties and flow. Although these materials may have generic names and possess similar properties (e.g. coal, iron ore), they can all behave quite differently under dynamic conditions. What we end up designing for one part of the plant may be quite different to what is needed in another part of the plant, which may be handling or …

Incremental Service Level Agreements Violation Handling With Time Impact Analysis, Azlan Ismail, Jun Yan, Jun Shen
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
This research addresses a critical issue of service level agreement (SLA) violation handling, i.e., time constraint violation related to service-based systems (SBS). Whenever an SLA violation occurs to a service, it can potentially impact dependent services, leading to unreliable SBS. Therefore, an SLA violation handling support is much required to produce a robust and adaptive SBS. There are several approaches to realizing exceptions and faults handling support for SBS, focusing on the detection stage, the analysis stage, and the resolution stage. However, the current works have not considered the handling strategy that takes the impact information into account to reduce …

Robust Yaw Moment Control For Vehicle Handling And Stability, Haiping Du, Nong Zhang, Wade Smith
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
This paper presents a robust yaw moment controller design approach for improving vehicle handling and stability. With considering the parameter-varying property of tyre cornering stiffness in extreme handling situations, a linear parameter-varying (LPV) model in polytopic form is constructed to represent the nonlinear characteristics of tyres. A yaw moment controller is then designed for the LPV model which aims at optimising the tracking performance on both yaw rate and sideslip angle with respect to their targets. The conditions for designing such a controller are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Numerical simulations on a nonlinear vehicle model are …

Deminers reported that the Victim was in a particularly happy mood that day. The Victim went to the grenade without telling anyone and began to dismantle it. His actions can be reliably inferred because the black cap of the grenade was undamaged at the site (and featured in the first site photographs after the accident). So it seems that the Victim got some way into the grenade before it went off in his hands. Severe hand (amputated fingers), arm, and upper body injury resulted - with bubbling blood and air from open chest wounds. From this it is inferred that …

[The Victim] was carrying out an unauthorised experiment with UXO near the [Demining group] Central Demolition Site at Loa, South Sudan. Contrary to SOPs he was attempting to burn out some High Explosive filling which was remaining in an item of UXO using propellant from a 23mm cartridge case. He was using matches directly onto the propellant to initiate the burn. Although the explosive filling was in an “open” casing of the UXO, it burned to detonation which fragmented the casing and resulted in a piece of metal going into the right leg, calf muscle area of [the Victim].
