Constructivism, Curiosity, And Metacognitive Bias In The Age Of Google, Matthew Moore May 2024

Constructivism, Curiosity, And Metacognitive Bias In The Age Of Google, Matthew Moore

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this experimental, posttest-only control-group study was to determine if there are differences in levels of metacognitive bias between those who do and do not use Google on a practice activity prior to the administration of a general knowledge test, when controlling for epistemic curiosity. The study seeks to help fill the gap in the literature by examining differences in metacognitive bias across not only the experimental variable of Google access, but also by participant variables, providing a more thorough understanding of how differences in individuals may moderate the relationship between Google use and bias. A sample of …

Abortion Pill Reversal And The Inappropriate Censorship Of Google Advertisements, Chloe S. Edwards Dec 2022

Abortion Pill Reversal And The Inappropriate Censorship Of Google Advertisements, Chloe S. Edwards

Pepperdine Policy Review

Abortion has been a contentious policy issue for nearly as long as United States has existed. From its legalization under the U.S. Constitution’s right to privacy in the Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade to the overturn of the decision this year in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Healthcare Organization, abortion policy has been on a back and forth swing for generations. The addition of medically advanced forms of abortion, including medical abortions administered via pills, has added another dimension to this already complicated matter. Recent censorship of abortion pill reversal ads by the internet site Google has shown the …

Digital Market Concentration: An Institutional And Social Cost Analysis, Jack Shane Jan 2022

Digital Market Concentration: An Institutional And Social Cost Analysis, Jack Shane

Honors Projects

In this thesis, I develop an analysis of the industry concentration seen in digital markets today. I begin with a description and argument for the use of institutional economics. This framework allows for the integration of an interdisciplinary approach to economics. My analysis details the socioeconomic and political impacts, as well as the underlying market dynamics that have pushed digital markets towards concentration. I offer novel explanations for the lack of firm behavior that should theoretically increase profit, the existence of barriers to competition, and consumer behavior that focus on the role of social institutions. I also detail many of …

Librarians Don’T Use Google!: Breaking Stereotypes And Myths About Smart Searching, Nora B. Wood, Dhy Edwardsberry Dec 2021

Librarians Don’T Use Google!: Breaking Stereotypes And Myths About Smart Searching, Nora B. Wood, Dhy Edwardsberry

Urban Library Journal

Students often assume that librarians sit with their noses stuck in dusty volumes all day. These same students are typically surprised to learn that many librarians actually work extensively with online resources and are adept at navigating websites and databases to uncover the best information. What comes as even more of a surprise? Learning that librarians rely heavily on Google to conduct thorough and credible research.

In this article, the authors will discuss how they helped break this librarian stereotype and turned the tables on preconceived notions of how to conduct smart research using Google for a group of undergraduate …

Antitrust And Platform Monopoly, Herbert J. Hovenkamp Nov 2021

Antitrust And Platform Monopoly, Herbert J. Hovenkamp

All Faculty Scholarship

Are large digital platforms that deal directly with consumers “winner take all,” or natural monopoly, firms? That question is surprisingly complex and does not produce the same answer for every platform. The closer one looks at digital platforms the less they seem to be winner-take-all. As a result, competition can be made to work in most of them. Further, antitrust enforcement, with its accommodation of firm variety, is generally superior to any form of statutory regulation that generalizes over large numbers.

Assuming that an antitrust violation is found, what should be the remedy? Breaking up large firms subject to extensive …

Http Error Codes Of Inaccessible And Retrieved Urls In Lis Journal Articles, Niveditha B., Mallinath Kumbar

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The present study examines the accessibility of URLs cited in the journals of Library and Information Science. The journals were selected based on their high impact factor published between 2008 and 2017. A PHP script was used to crawl the Uniform Resource Locators (URL) collected from the reference list. A total of 3,24,636 references were extracted from 7986 articles, out of which 51,839 had URLs. The research findings indicated that 23.10% of URLs were inaccessible. The majority of errors were due to the HTTP 404 error code (Not found error), which accounted for 83.10%. The study retrieved 61.76% of inaccessible …

Evaluation Of Famous Recommender Systems: A Comparative Analysis, Jayanta Kr Nayek, Rajesh Das

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

In this era of the internet and with the easy availability of data at a very low cost, searching for information is growing at an exponential rate. So, it is now impossible to find the desired information without proper guidance. Here is the need of the recommendation system. The system will recommend which information relevant to the user according to their searching pattern. It will also explore hidden results with a minimal effect. The goal of this paper is to describe the famous recommendation systems which are used mostly and to explore what is the need of these kinds of …

Semantic Analysis And Synthesis In The Automatic Analysis Of The Text, Shakhnoza Kakhramonovna Gulyamova Mar 2021

Semantic Analysis And Synthesis In The Automatic Analysis Of The Text, Shakhnoza Kakhramonovna Gulyamova

Scientific reports of Bukhara State University

Introduction. In the information-search engine, semantic analysis and synthesis occupy a leading place. When we say automatic semantic analysis, using specially developed linguistic algorithms, we understand a set of methods and techniques that can be used with sufficient accuracy to express the meaning of random speech in a natural language with the help of a rigorous, accurate tool that is carried out on a computer. Highlighting the importance of the semantic analyzer in the information search engine, it is first of all associated with the study of the process of semantic analysis and synthesis in the automatic analysis of the …

Google Books, Jody Condit Fagan Feb 2021

Google Books, Jody Condit Fagan

Libraries

Google Books’ (GB) full-text search of more than 40 million books offers significant value for libraries and their patrons. However, Google’s refusal to disclose information about the coverage of GB, as well as observed gaps and inaccuracies in the collection and its metadata, makes it difficult to recommend with confidence for a given research need. While most search and retrieval functions work well, glitches aren’t hard to find, which suggests GB development is focused on user experiences that relate to monetization. Privacy and equity concerns surrounding GB mirror those of other big technology platforms. Still, every librarian should familiarize themselves …

Discovering The Relationship Between Investor Attention And Trade Volume In The Philippine Stock Exchange Using Google Search Analysis, Patrick Allan G. Morando, Isabel Louise D. Banico, Martin Stevens C. Ng, Riggs Mattieu M. Villardo Oct 2020

Discovering The Relationship Between Investor Attention And Trade Volume In The Philippine Stock Exchange Using Google Search Analysis, Patrick Allan G. Morando, Isabel Louise D. Banico, Martin Stevens C. Ng, Riggs Mattieu M. Villardo

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

This study investigates the relationship between daily Google search volume and trade volume in the Philippine Stock Exchange. This is completed by employing a sample consisting of listed stocks in the Philippine Stock Exchange from 2015 to 2019 and testing the veracity of three different keyword categories in proxying investor attention. The empirical results indicate that when using company names and stock tickers as Google search keywords, there is a strong positive relationship between Google search volume and trade volume. This implies that the more investors search for a stock’s company name or ticker, the more likely that there will …

Antitrust In Times Of Information Technology: An Analysis Of Big Tech Monopoly Cases, Shamayeta Rahman Jan 2020

Antitrust In Times Of Information Technology: An Analysis Of Big Tech Monopoly Cases, Shamayeta Rahman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The information technology industry is one of the most rapidly growing yet concentrated markets existing today. Big Tech monopolies and their increasingly anticompetitive behavior posits risks for competition, technological innovation and consumer welfare. This ranges from price discrimination, limiting consumer choices to the unethical use of data. The particular nature of information technology, with its network effects and negligible marginal costs, incentivizes and facilitates predatory market practices making antitrust analysis in this industry extremely complex. Certain schools of antitrust thought are more sensitive (namely the post-Chicago school) to these implications than others, though antitrust application is still lacking in both …

Running With The Amazons, Carol Tenopir

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

WHY HAVEN'T LIBRARY SYSTEM and information database designers included as many user-friendly features as Amazon and Google? This question, posed at the recent annual meeting of the American Society for Information Science & Technology (ASIST), was answered by UCLA professor Marcia Bates, who said that from 20 years of research we know what should be included, but we've never had the money to implement fancy search features. Now, we have a lot of catching up to do.

Surveillance And The Self: Understanding Privacy And Identity In Digital Environments, Alecea Ritter Standlee

Friday Forum

The widespread use of internet enabled devices among contemporary US adults has given rise to a series of questions about issues of identity, privacy and group behaviors. The increasing use of algorithmic systems in social media and the attendant privacy concerns among users may also contribute to increased levels of strategic management of identity among users. In order to contribute to this discussion, this project examines perceptions and practices of privacy and self-representation in digital spaces among college age adults 18-24. This project utilizes semi-structured interview data collected with college students in the Eastern United States and focuses on both …

Big Tech Surveillance Could Damage Democracy, Chase Johnson Jun 2019

Big Tech Surveillance Could Damage Democracy, Chase Johnson

University Author Recognition Bibliography: 2019

Data is often called the oil of the 21st century.

The more tech companies know about their users, the more effectively they can direct them to goods and services that they are likely to buy. The more companies know about their users, the more competitive they are in the market.

Custom-tailored capitalism is what has made Google, Facebook, Amazon and others the richest companies in the world. This profit incentive has turned big tech into a competitive field of mass intelligence gathering. The better and more comprehensive the data, the higher profits will be.

But this business model – what …

Revealing The Hidden Humanities: Strategies For Academic Libraries To Improve Access And Awareness, Jody Condit Fagan, Malia Willey Apr 2019

Revealing The Hidden Humanities: Strategies For Academic Libraries To Improve Access And Awareness, Jody Condit Fagan, Malia Willey

Libraries

While research in the sciences and social sciences has become increasingly visible to search engines, research in the humanities has remained relatively hidden. There are discipline-specific challenges to scholarly communication in the humanities. Visualizations from two studies illustrate how humanities scholarship currently has limited discoverability and access. These results suggest that academic libraries are well-positioned to increase the visibility of humanities scholarship if they can leverage relationships. This poster presents opportunities for collaboration across library areas and strategies for revealing research in the humanities. Ideas for further exploration are identified and attendees will be invited to share their insights.

The Warren Campaign’S Antitrust Proposals, Herbert J. Hovenkamp Mar 2019

The Warren Campaign’S Antitrust Proposals, Herbert J. Hovenkamp

All Faculty Scholarship

Antitrust policy promises to be an important issue in the 2020 presidential election, and for good reason. Market power measured by price-cost margins has been on the rise since the 1980s. Presidential candidate Senator Elizabeth Warren has two proposals directed at large tech platforms. One would designate large platform markets such as Amazon “platform utilities,” and prohibit them from selling their own merchandise on the platform in competition with other retailers. The other proposes more aggressive enforcement against large platform acquisitions of smaller companies.

This paper concludes that the first proposal is anticompetitive, leading to reduced output and higher prices …

Review Of Algorithms Of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism, Yvonne C. Garrett Mar 2019

Review Of Algorithms Of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism, Yvonne C. Garrett

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

In recent years, the idea that the algorithms behind for-profit search engines are somehow neutral or unbiased has been heavily critiqued but for those who still hold onto a belief of objectivity and accuracy, Safiya Umoja Noble presents a clear and well-researched argument against such naiveté. These algorithms and the searches they drive are instead, Noble argues, a part of systemic structural oppression around race and gender. For Noble, Google Search’s algorithms are structured in a way that supports dominant narratives reflecting hegemonic frameworks and these same frameworks are an integral part of the structured oppression of women and people …

Access To Humanities Scholarship Through Public Search Engines, Jody C. Fagan, Malia Willey Nov 2018

Access To Humanities Scholarship Through Public Search Engines, Jody C. Fagan, Malia Willey

Libraries

While research has shown search engine coverage of science and social science scholarship rivals traditional library databases, the coverage or utility of public search engines for the humanities needs further exploration. This presentation will report results from at least two empirical research studies that investigated access to humanities scholarship via public search engines (e.g. Google, Google Scholar, Google Books, Microsoft Academic). We will propose additional research ideas that we hope will inspire future studies.

Is Google Self-Aware?, Gerry Heapes

Irish Communication Review

The field of artificial intelligence evolves incrementally with gradual improvement over time and has relied on the Turing Test as a measure of progress. However human standards of intelligence measurement may not be appropriate to current developments. The platform of cloud computing now provides a means of implementing a kind of ubiquitous awareness unknown to humans before now and a means of augmenting human intelligence. The level of awareness held by Google is explored and some recent developments in the uses of AI programmes for social media are covered. The misinterpretation of these developments is explored and a solution proposed. …

The global geospatial technology industry, in a study by UK-based Oxera commissioned by Google in January 2013, has been estimated at $150 USD billion to $270 USD billion per year ($110 billion euro to $199 billion euro). In a similar US-focused study, also commissioned by Google in 2013, the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) found the geospatial services industry employs approximately 500,000 people and generates around $75 (USD) billion in annual revenue ($55 billion euro). By any measure, the geospatial industry is large one, in both the US and globally. With this explosive growth, combined with the current generation of geospatial …

Metamorphic Testing Of Navigation Software: A Pilot Study With Google Maps, Joshua Brown, Zhiquan Zhou, Yang-Wai Chow Jan 2018

Metamorphic Testing Of Navigation Software: A Pilot Study With Google Maps, Joshua Brown, Zhiquan Zhou, Yang-Wai Chow

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Millions of people use navigation software every day to commute and travel. In addition, many systems rely upon the correctness of navigation software to function, ranging from directions applications to self-driving machinery. Navigation software is difficult to test because it is hard or very expensive to evaluate its output. This difficulty is generally known as the oracle problem, a fundamental challenge in software testing. In this study, we propose a metamorphic testing strategy to alleviate the oracle problem in testing navigation software, and conduct a case study by testing the Google Maps mobile app, its web service API, and its …

Fake News: What Is The Real Issue?, Hannah Hines Jan 2018

Fake News: What Is The Real Issue?, Hannah Hines

Honors Theses

In the 2016 election, fake news was a real, and well-publicized, story. Foreign bodies were accused of meddling in America's political system by spreading fake stories through widely used social media outlets such as Facebook, Google, and Twitter, and these stories reportedly garnered a wide audience. According to Facebook itself, Russian bot-generated fake news reached 126 million users -- almost half of the U.S. population.

There was much outcry and uproar about the fake news conundrum, with advocates and activists on all sides pointing a finger one way or the other. Many pontificated on whether these stories affected the outcome …

Protecting One's Own Privacy In A Big Data Economy, Anita L. Allen Dec 2016

Protecting One's Own Privacy In A Big Data Economy, Anita L. Allen

All Faculty Scholarship

Big Data is the vast quantities of information amenable to large-scale collection, storage, and analysis. Using such data, companies and researchers can deploy complex algorithms and artificial intelligence technologies to reveal otherwise unascertained patterns, links, behaviors, trends, identities, and practical knowledge. The information that comprises Big Data arises from government and business practices, consumer transactions, and the digital applications sometimes referred to as the “Internet of Things.” Individuals invisibly contribute to Big Data whenever they live digital lifestyles or otherwise participate in the digital economy, such as when they shop with a credit card, get treated at a hospital, apply …
