Lost In Translation: Faculty And Archivist Communication, Blake Spitz

ACRL New England Chapter Annual Conference

What happens when a partnership with a faculty member seems like a success, only to reveal misunderstandings and difficult repercussions? This talk will discuss lessons learned from a complex collaboration between an archivist and a labor studies instructor to orient a class of graduate students to special collections and archival research. After several conversations, (with some miscommunications and surprises along the way!) a graduate student class on U.S. Labor History visited our Special Collections for an intense 2.5 hour deep-dive into our various labor collections. The archivist led all portions of the class, focusing on primary source analysis and specific …

How The Demographic Composition Of Academic Science And Engineering Departments Influences Workplace Culture, Faculty Experience, And Retention Risk, Eric E. Griffith, Nilanjana Dasgupta

Anthropology Department Faculty Publication Series

Although on average women are underrepresented in academic science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) departments at universities, an underappreciated fact is that women’s representation varies widely across STEM disciplines. Past research is fairly silent on how local variations in gender composition impact faculty experiences. This study fills that gap. A survey of STEM departments at a large research university finds that women faculty in STEM are less professionally satisfied than male colleagues only if they are housed in departments where women are a small numeric minority. Gender differences in satisfaction are largest in departments with less than 25% women, smaller …

Using Ethnographic Interviewing To Learn About Your Faculty, Carolyn Mills, Sharon Giovenale May 2017

Using Ethnographic Interviewing To Learn About Your Faculty, Carolyn Mills, Sharon Giovenale

ACRL New England Chapter Annual Conference

We were part of a nineteen institution ethnographic study on the research practices and support needs of agriculture faculty, under the auspices of Ithaka S+R in 2016. We will use our work to illustrate how ethnographic interviewing works. We will discuss:

  • Training and preparation
  • The process of recruiting and interviewing, and interview transcription.
  • Coding & analysis of results, mapping findings from the interview transcriptions
  • Our findings and conclusions which, though drawn from agriculture, are potentially applicable to a broader range of science researchers

Our message to attendees is that anyone can do this research with the right preparation and support. …

Parental Leave Usage By Fathers And Mothers At An American University, Jennifer H. Lundquist, Joya Misra, Kerryann O'Meara Jan 2012

Parental Leave Usage By Fathers And Mothers At An American University, Jennifer H. Lundquist, Joya Misra, Kerryann O'Meara

Dr. Jennifer H. Lundquist

While many U.S. research universities now offer gender neutral family friendly policies, very few are what might be considered “father friendly.” Campus cultures rarely encourage men to access these policies, or do so reluctantly because some campus actors believe men will use parental leave time for their research instead of for childcare. We employ quantitative and qualitative data to compare the parental leave experiences of men and women faculty at a large research university. In doing so, we assess whether the allegation that men take unfair advantage parental leave is true at a large research university. We find that it …
