Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort, located in Augusta, Michigan, operates several golf courses in the greater Kalamazoo region. A significant portion of its clients is not only from outside the region, but also outside the state of Michigan. Along with golf operations, Gull Lake View offers lodging, spa services, eating and drinking establishments, and meetings, weddings, and other events. The Resort wanted to better understand from where outside the region its patrons come and the economic impact resulting from the activities generated by these patrons.

Prior to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, nonresident travelers would spend over $3 billion in Montana each year. This report looks at how the money spent is distributed across the six Montana travel regions, as well as 16 of the 56 counties in the state which receive the highest spending, and is based on an average of 2018 and 2019 traveler spending data.

Even though Nepal reported the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in late January 2020, Nepal was one of the least affected countries in South Asia until the end of April 2020. Lockdown and social distancing were implemented from the very beginning and people also contributed voluntarily with certain exceptions to that government’s efforts. Daily hotel data are employed, along with information on prices, revenue, demand and hotel occupancy, to analyze part of the local economic impact of the annual New York City (NYC) Marathon. As the largest competitive race in the world, the marathon attracts domestic and international competitors and spectators. The cancellation of the 2012 marathon due to Hurricane Sandy was estimated to lead to an increase of 4000 hotel nights as well as a 10% increase in the average daily room rate. Taken together, this is associated with a USD 3 million increase in hotel revenue. The results suggest a significantly …

Smoking has been estimated to increase health care costs in the United States by $167.5 billion annually (Xu et al. 2015). In Kentucky, smoking adds $2.5 billion in health care expenditures each year. Most of these costs were paid by public programs such as Medicaid and Medicare. While these costs are significant, they represent only a portion of the costs that smoking imposes on society. Smoking also leads to poorer labor market outcomes. Smokers are more likely to be unemployed, earn lower wages, and die prematurely than non-smokers. These negative labor market effects reduce economic …

Economic impact estimates the benefits within the regional economy generated by an economic activity of an entity for an affected region. This study uses an input-output (I-O) model to estimate the effect of NASA Glenn Research Center’s spending on the economies of Northeast Ohio (NEO) and Ohio. This model measures economic impact in terms of growth in output (sales), value added (output less intermediary goods), number of new and supported jobs, labor income, and tax revenues.

This study aims to measure the economic impact of the 2018 Conference USA Baseball Tournament on the Mississippi Gulf Coast compared to holding the college sporting event at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Visitor spending and demographic data was collected through random intercept surveys outside MGM Park in Biloxi, Mississippi. The Economic Modeling LLC (EMSI) Input-Output model was used to determine the economic and fiscal impact of visitor spending during the sporting event. Concussion, or mild traumatic brain injury especially among young children, teenagers, and young adults, is a significant problem in Ada County, Idaho, and the United States. Although much has been learned about concussion, considerable controversy and gaps in knowledge still exist in many areas of research, leading to variation in concussion assessment, treatment and management protocols. Health systems can positively impact concussion outcomes through community education and outreach, and provision of timely, coordinated, evidence-based clinical care. Counting conservatively, and ignoring physical injuries and mental trauma, data show about 100 million mass atrocity-related deaths since 1900. Occurring in war and in peacetime, and of enormous scale, severity, and brutality, they are geographically widespread, occur with surprising frequency, and can be long-lasting in their adverse effects on economic and human development, wellbeing, and wealth. As such, they are a major economic concern. This article synthesizes very diverse and widely dispersed theoretical and empirical literatures, addressing two gaps: a “mass atrocities gap” in the economics literature and an “economics gap” in mass atrocities scholarship. Cruise tourism is of increasing importance in Atlantic Canada. Average annual growth during the 1990-2015 period in Halifax was 9.24% (Transport Canada, 2016). Total cruise ship visitors to Halifax has grown tenfold over the last two decades, from approximately 24,000 in 1990 to 238,217 in 2015 (Transport Canada, 2016). The U.S. Supreme Court ruled the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) unconstitutional on Monday, May 14, 2018 in a 6-3 decision. In general under PASPA individuals could only bet on sporting events in the state of Nevada though wagering on horse races was permitted at the state level. Post-PASPA, betting on individual sporting events could become a substitute for wagering on horse races, or it could become a complement to it if general gamblers pursue horse racing. In Western society, sport economic impact studies are often utilized to showcase the financial benefits for hosting mega sport event or to justify the spending for entering bids or covering infrastructure construction costs. This study projected economic impact of the 2017 Summer Universiade by examining the Taiwanese (the hosting country) residents’ willingness to attendance and estimated individual spending (consumption) while attending the games. Through a series of convenience sampling surveys from February to April, 2017, 1,021 respondents (53.5% males and 45.3% females) reported their potential personal spending, willingness to attend the events, and preferred ticket price range. BorderLight International Theater Festival is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established to launch a summer festival of contemporary international theater in Cleveland beginning in July 2019. Co-directors Dale Heinen and Jeffrey Pence have spearheaded BorderLight’s inception and programming. This report measures the economic impact of early-stage companies that were supported in the past by JumpStart Inc. and its partners in the Northeast Ohio Entrepreneurial Service Provider Program (ESP) in 2016. The ESP is a collaborative entrepreneurial support network funded in part by Ohio Third Frontier that includes accelerators, incubators, angel funds, and other organizations dedicated to commercializing technologies and fostering promising entrepreneurial ventures in Northeast Ohio. The companies included in this report have received significant technical assistance and/or direct investment funding from entrepreneurial support organizations in the ESP.
