Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298

The subfamily Argiopinae SIMON, 1890 is reported for Mongolia the first time by Argiope lobata (PALLAS, 1772). Furthermore, we herein highlight the most eastern distribution of this species, which is widespread in the Mediterranean, African and in some Asian countries. The obtained specimen was found in the Eastern Gobi, a landscape of semi-desert character. Despite numerous studies with arachnological background in the past, even larger species new for Mongolia could be found. Findings like this show the on-going need for basic biodiversity research in the Gobi ecoregions. We further discuss previous, but doubtful reports of A. lobata in South-east Asia …

In the present study, we surveyed the diversity of scorpions in six provinces of Mongolia (Bayankhongor, Khovd, Dundgovi, Dornogovi, Govisümber and Ömnögovi) between 2001 and 2012. A total of 385 individuals were collected at 17 different sites. In addition to opportunistic sampling, animals were collected after detection with ultraviolet light. Only species from the genus Mesobuthus have been reported from Mongolia thus far. It was possible to confirm the occurrence of the species Mesobuthus eupeus mongolicus and report the presence of M. martensii martensii for the first time. We could not confirm the presence of M. caucasicus przewalskii and suggest …

Online Coordinated Voltage Control In Distribution Systems Subjected To Structural Changes And Dg Availability, Dothinka Ranamuka Rallage, Ashish P. Agalgaonkar, Kashem M. Muttaqi Jan 2016

Online Coordinated Voltage Control In Distribution Systems Subjected To Structural Changes And Dg Availability, Dothinka Ranamuka Rallage, Ashish P. Agalgaonkar, Kashem M. Muttaqi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The responses of multiple DG units and voltage regulating devices such as tap changers and capacitor banks for correcting the voltage may lead to operational conflicts and oscillatory transients, where distribution systems are subjected to network reconfiguration and changes in availability of the DG units. Therefore, coordinated voltage control is required to minimize control interactions while accounting for the impact of structural changes associated with the network. This paper proposes a strategy for coordinating the operation of multiple voltage regulating devices and DG units in medium voltage (MV) distribution systems, under structural changes and DG availability, for effective voltage control. …

A Review Of Protection Systems For Distribution Networks Embedded With Renewable Generation, Joel Kennedy, Philip Ciufo, Ashish P. Agalgaonkar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The rapid growth of grid-connected embedded generation is changing the operational characteristics of power distribution networks. Amongst a range of issues being reported in the research, the effect of these changes on so-called 'traditional protection systems' has not gone without attention. Looking to the future, the possibility of microgrid systems and deliberate islanding of sections of the network will require highly flexible distribution management systems and a re-design of protection strategies. This paper explores the envisaged protection issues concerned with large penetrations of embedded generation in distribution networks extending into auto-reclosure and protection device coordination. A critical review of recently …

Identifying Spatial Process Of Vacant Housing In Buffalo Core Urban Area, Yutian Feng Jan 2016

Identifying Spatial Process Of Vacant Housing In Buffalo Core Urban Area, Yutian Feng

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

With the fact that vacant houses contribute to decline of living environment, understanding spatial distribution and agents of vacant house behind that spatial pattern is necessary for policy-makers to better work out proactive plans. An agreement that vacant buildings are not only symptomatic of other problems but even contributes to neighborhood decline. Thus, this paper will examine spatial characteristics of the compact and contiguous Buffalo urban district through three steps. First, we will test if there is spatial auto-correlation of vacant houses throughout the whole study area by global Moran’s I. Secondly, the Ordinary Least Square Regression Model without considering …

During a series of studies on the population, ecology, and biology of the Cinereous Vulture in Mongolia, fully feathered nestlings of the species from 9 nests were examined, without the use of chemical methods, for Mallophaga infestation from 2010 to 2015. The collection resulted in several first records for Mongolia of three species: Laemobothrion vulturis (J. C. FABRICIUS, 1775) sensu lato (Amblycera, Laemobothriidae), Neocolpocephalum aegypii (TENDEIRO, 1989) (Amblycera, Menoponidae s. l.) sp. inq., and Falcolipeurus quadripustulatus (BURMEISTER, 1838) (Ischnocera, Philopteridae s. l.). Despite being expected, there has still been no record of Agypoecus brevicollis (BURMEISTER, 1838) in Mongolia.

The Labor Share Question In China, Hao Qi Nov 2015

The Labor Share Question In China, Hao Qi

Doctoral Dissertations

In this study I explore why China’s labor share measured by the conventional approach experienced a major decline over the period from the mid-1990s to the outbreak of the global financial and economic crisis in 2008. I adopt a Marxian approach to address this question. Following the Marxian approach, I focus on how the power relation in the sphere of production affects labor’s share. I argue that major changes in the power relation that took place during the transition of China’s economic system have played a crucial role in the changes of distribution. To this end, I build homogenous series …

Online Mapping Tools For Geolocating Amish Settlements, Andrew M. Wilson, Brian J.B. Lonabocker, Megan E. Zagorski Oct 2015

Online Mapping Tools For Geolocating Amish Settlements, Andrew M. Wilson, Brian J.B. Lonabocker, Megan E. Zagorski

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

This technical note demonstrates the value of using online mapping tools as a method of geolocating Amish settlements. Primarily using freely available Bing and Google maps and published lists of the addresses of Amish ministers, we geolocated 1,362 Amish households in Ohio and 1,203 in Pennsylvania, representing about 10% of Amish households in those states. From these data we were able to derive a population density map of the Amish across Ohio and Pennsylvania. We caution that our map is merely a model and based on several assumptions, but the product is a finer resolution map of Amish distribution than …

Unl Digital Commons For Ucare, Paul Royster Aug 2015

Unl Digital Commons For Ucare, Paul Royster

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Conference Presentations and Speeches

UCARE is the program for Undergraduate Creative Activity and Research at University of Nebraska–Lincoln. It gives college students the opportunity to be co-researchers and co-authors with university faculty. This presentation concerns the digital preservation and online distribution of those research products. It interprets the story of Noah's Ark, not as a historical fable, but as an existential one—an illustration of the digital flood constantly ongoing around us at every moment. Noah did not discriminate between "good" and "bad" animals; he included every species. When the time came, he released all the animals back into the world, having preserved them for …

Digital Games Distribution: The Presence Of The Past And The Future Of Obsolescence, Christopher L. Moore Jul 2015

Digital Games Distribution: The Presence Of The Past And The Future Of Obsolescence, Christopher L. Moore

Christopher L Moore Dr

A common criticism of the rhythm video games genre — including series like Guitar Hero and Rock Band, is that playing musical simulation games is a waste of time when you could be playing an actual guitar and learning a real skill. A more serious criticism of games cultures draws attention to the degree of e-waste they produce. E-waste or electronic waste includes mobiles phones, computers, televisions and other electronic devices, containing toxic chemicals and metals whose landfill, recycling and salvaging all produce distinct environmental and social problems. The e-waste produced by games like Guitar Hero is obvious in the …

Reconceptualizing Markets: Hip- Hop Artists, Marketing, Distribution, And Consumers, Ronald Pikes Jul 2015

Reconceptualizing Markets: Hip- Hop Artists, Marketing, Distribution, And Consumers, Ronald Pikes

Theses and Dissertations

Sociologists have made many contributions to the current understanding of markets. In spite of these contributions, individuals and market practices in sociology are generally overlooked, but both are important because individuals and their practices give markets their form. By overlooking market practices, sociologists disregard two of the most important forces within markets, distribution and marketing. These oversights significantly reduce our ability to understand how modern economic markets operate. Thus, the focus of this study is centered on market actions of independent hip-hop music artists and consumers of hip-hop music especially in regards to music distribution technology. Data was collected via …

Improved Dairy Cattle: Impact And Distribution In Rural Tanzanian Communities, Jeremy Weaver, Alexon Mwasi, Lindsay Weaver

Interdisciplinary Journal of Best Practices in Global Development

Improved dairy cattle are recognized as an integral part of improving the livelihoods for the rural and urban poor in developing countries. The aim of this research was to measure impact, reveal challenges, map distribution, and establish recommendations for moving forward in improved livestock distribution initiatives. The methods consisted of a hybrid model using both quantitative and qualitative modalities, especially focusing on personal interviews, focus group discussions, field observation, and GIS data capturing. GIS based comparisons could not be made because of a lack of available GIS demographic data for the area. The combined modalities approach (especially the in-depth interviews …

Power Sharing Among Multiple Solar Photovoltaic (Pv) Systems In A Radial Distribution Feeder, Brian K. Perera, Philip Ciufo Apr 2015

Power Sharing Among Multiple Solar Photovoltaic (Pv) Systems In A Radial Distribution Feeder, Brian K. Perera, Philip Ciufo

Dr Philip Ciufo

With an increasing penetration of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, power distribution grids are becoming more susceptible to network voltage rise. As per applicable standards for grid-integrated PV systems, a PV system must be automatically disconnected from the grid when the terminal voltage of the PV system exceeds a defined maximum voltage. With this directive, in certain situations, PV systems connected at nodes at which the voltage sensitivity is high, may be disconnected from the grid while PV systems connected at less sensitive nodes are continuing to operate. In such a situation, owners whose PV systems are connected at nodes at …

A Sensitivity Analysis Toolkit For The Simplification Of Mv Distribution Network Voltage Management, Fabian Tamp, Philip Ciufo Apr 2015

A Sensitivity Analysis Toolkit For The Simplification Of Mv Distribution Network Voltage Management, Fabian Tamp, Philip Ciufo

Dr Philip Ciufo

As distribution networks become increasingly variable and generation becomes increasingly decentralised, voltage standards are becoming more liable to violation. Accordingly, intelligent voltage management strategies are required to enable standards compliance without unduly increasing network maintenance or infrastructure costs. The relationship between network power and voltages, however, is complex, non-linear and interdependent, and thus is difficult to conceptualise and use for decision-making and control purposes. This paper introduces a software toolkit that simplifies the development of voltage management strategies by the application of sensitivity analysis. Sensitivity analysis reduces complex network relationships to simple linear equations, and thus enables easy and comprehensive …

Over-Voltage Mitigation Within Distribution Networks With A High Renewable Distributed Generation Penetration, Joel Kennedy, Philip Ciufo, Ashish Agalgaonkar Apr 2015

Over-Voltage Mitigation Within Distribution Networks With A High Renewable Distributed Generation Penetration, Joel Kennedy, Philip Ciufo, Ashish Agalgaonkar

Dr Philip Ciufo

The rapid growth of grid-connected distributed generation has increased the likelihood of over-voltage occurrences in distribution networks. In recent times, much research has taken place in order to develop a control strategy to mitigate the voltage rise problem. However, most of the published strategies require re-tuning when additional resources are connected, or have a strong dependence on network parameters, such as fault level. This paper proposes a novel over-voltage mitigation scheme that has many advantages not observed in literature. Firstly, the control scheme can integrate with an existing feeder in a plug-and-play fashion. No prior analysis is necessary to configure …

We use GEOS-Chem chemical transport model simulations of sulfate–ammonium aerosol data from the NASA ARCTAS and NOAA ARCPAC aircraft campaigns in the North American Arctic in April 2008, together with longer-term data from surface sites, to better understand aerosol sources in the Arctic in winter–spring and the implications for aerosol acidity. Arctic pollution is dominated by transport from mid-latitudes, and we test the relevant ammonia and sulfur dioxide emission inventories in the model by comparison with wet deposition flux data over the source continents. We find that a complicated mix of natural and anthropogenic sources with different vertical signatures is …

Updated Marine Mammal Distribution And Abundance Estimates In British Columbia, Benjamin D. Best, Caroline H. Fox, Rob Williams, Patrick H. Halpin, Paul C. Paquet Jan 2015

Updated Marine Mammal Distribution And Abundance Estimates In British Columbia, Benjamin D. Best, Caroline H. Fox, Rob Williams, Patrick H. Halpin, Paul C. Paquet

Population Distribution and Habitat Collection

Information relating to the distribution and abundance of species is critical for effective conservation and management. For many species, including cetacean species of conservation concern, abundance estimates are lacking, out of date and/or highly uncertain. Systematic, line-transect marine mammal surveys were conducted in British Columbia’s (BC) coastal waters over multiple years and seasons (summer 2004, 2005, 2008, and spring/autumn 2007). In total, 10,057km of transects were surveyed in an 83,547km2 study area. Abundance estimates were calculated using two different methods: Conventional Distance Sampling (CDS) and Density Surface Modelling (DSM). CDS generates a single density estimate for each stratum, whereas DSM …

Is The Nature Of The Demand Regime Relevant Over The Medium Run? Revisiting Distributional Issues In A Portfolio Framework Under Different Exchange Rate Regimes, Arslan Razmi Jan 2015

Is The Nature Of The Demand Regime Relevant Over The Medium Run? Revisiting Distributional Issues In A Portfolio Framework Under Different Exchange Rate Regimes, Arslan Razmi

Economics Department Working Paper Series

Is growth in capitalist economies wage-led or profit-led? Empirical studies have found conflicting results for different countries and periods. Possible reasons may include the endogeneity of distributional shares, differences in the monetary policy/exchange rate regimes across countries, and divergence between macro behavior in the short- and medium-runs. I theoretically explore these possibilities using a portfolio balance framework to keep track of asset stocks and wealth effects over time. With fixed exchange rates, the Central Bank’s need to intervene in the asset market via official reserve transactions results in assigning a crucial role to the current account in constraining accumulation and …

Simulink Model For Examining Dynamic Interactions Involving Electro-Mechanical Oscillations In Distribution Systems, Dothinka Ranamuka Rallage, Ashish P. Agalgaonkar, Kashem M. Muttaqi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In Australian medium voltage (MV) distribution networks, the majority of embedded local generation (LG) uses synchronous machine based technology. LG units with a synchronous generator can easily be dispatched and controlled to provide or absorb reactive power and thereby locally supporting the system voltage and increasing the voltage stability margin. The fast response from a synchronous machine based LG unit exciter will ensure fast voltage recovery. This will significantly improve the transient voltage stability. Also, the synchronous machine based LG units can provide inertial support to the system. Furthermore, some of these LG technologies work as standby power supplies all …

Application Of Saturated Core Fault Current Limiters To Interconnected Distribution Networks, Sasareka Gunawardana Mudalige, Sarath Perera, Jeffrey W. Moscrop Jan 2015

Application Of Saturated Core Fault Current Limiters To Interconnected Distribution Networks, Sasareka Gunawardana Mudalige, Sarath Perera, Jeffrey W. Moscrop

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

There is an increasing need for electricity utilities to limit fault levels in critical locations in power systems so that existing switchgear can continue to function as expected. This is particularly true in electrical distribution systems, where the increased penetration of renewable and decentralised generation is forcing the network to be highly interconnected in order to allow for higher integration capacity and reliable operation. Consequently, the short-circuit currents in distribution systems have increased significantly. In this background, application of fault current limiting devices is one of the solutions that is being considered by the Distribution Network Service Providers (DNSPs). A …

Attenuation And Propagation Of Voltage Unbalance In Radial Distribution Networks, Devinda Perera, Philip Ciufo, Lasantha G. Meegahapola, Sarath Perera Jan 2015

Attenuation And Propagation Of Voltage Unbalance In Radial Distribution Networks, Devinda Perera, Philip Ciufo, Lasantha G. Meegahapola, Sarath Perera

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Recently published International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC) technical reports IEC 61000-3-13 provides detailed methodologies for managing voltage unbalance (VU) in electric power systems. A key aspect in the VU emission allocation process is the estimation of VU propagation in different parts of the network. Although the VU propagation from upstream networks to downstream networks is adequately addressed, the attenuation of VU when propagating from downstream to upstream networks at the same voltage level has not been properly taken into account in the aforementioned methodologies. Furthermore, mains connected three-phase induction motors are known to attenuate VU, and there is no methodology currently …

Optimal Distribution Control Of Non‐Linear Tire Force Of Electric Vehicles With In‐Wheel Motors, Boyuan Li, Haiping Du, Weihua Li Jan 2015

Optimal Distribution Control Of Non‐Linear Tire Force Of Electric Vehicles With In‐Wheel Motors, Boyuan Li, Haiping Du, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

An over-actuated control system has the advantage of being able to use redundant actuators to reconfigure the control system and it can realize fault tolerant control. In order to achieve improved vehicle stability and handling performance for electric vehicles with in-wheel steering and driving motors, the control of the vehicle body slip angle and yaw rate is actually an over-actuated control problem. To obtain the optimal solution for this control problem, this study proposes a two-level tire force distribution control method, where the upper level controller calculates the desired lateral and longitudinal forces generated by friction on the tire of …

The Optimisation Of The Secondary Cooling Water Distribution With Improved Genetic Algorithm In Continuous Casting Of Steels, Yu-Chun Zhai, Ying Li, Beiyue Ma, C Yan, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

An improved genetic algorithm is presented for the water consumption of the secondary cooling zone based on the heat transfer model of the off-line bloom caster. This study is to control the existing cooling systems and the steel casting practises in order to produce steel with best possible quality. The fitness function of improved genetic algorithm is founded according to the metallurgical criteria. This algorithm coupled with heat transfer model and metallurgical criteria, added dynamic coding method and self-adapting mutation on the original genetic algorithm can increase water distribution adaptively and improve the process efficiency. The simulation results of T91 …

Why Is The Crowd Divided? Attribution For Dispersion In Online Word Of Mouth, Stephen He, Samuel Bond Jan 2015

Why Is The Crowd Divided? Attribution For Dispersion In Online Word Of Mouth, Stephen He, Samuel Bond

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The widespread availability of online word of mouth (WOM) enables modern consumers to assess not only the opinions of others about products and services, but also the extent to which those opinions are consistent or dispersive. Despite longstanding calls for greater understanding of mixed opinions, existing evidence is inconclusive regarding effects of WOM dispersion, and theoretical accounts have relied primarily on the notion of reference dependence. Extending prior work, this research proposes an attribution-based account, in which consumer interpretation of WOM dispersion depends on the extent to which tastes in a product domain are perceived to be dissimilar, so that …

Infrastructure, Production, And Archive: American And Japanese Video Art Production Of 1960s And 1970s, Ann Atsuko Adachi Oct 2014

Infrastructure, Production, And Archive: American And Japanese Video Art Production Of 1960s And 1970s, Ann Atsuko Adachi

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Focusing a study on the infrastructure of artistic production and maintenance opens a space in which to examine the relationship between artistic inspiration and knowledge making, the occurrences and the writing of its history. In the case of the comparative study of the emergence of Japanese and American video art, common artistic technique employed may indicate motivations derived from the technical possibility of the video medium, while the study of infrastructure demonstrates how large-scale funding, formation of archives, the establishment of systems of distribution and channels of education affect the emergence and development of video art as a genre. This …
