Relationships Among Patterns Of Criminal Thinking Styles And Recidivism In Non-Violent Offenders On Probation, Dr. Louise Mitsianis
Relationships Among Patterns Of Criminal Thinking Styles And Recidivism In Non-Violent Offenders On Probation, Dr. Louise Mitsianis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The 3-year rate of recidivism in the United States is around 43%, costing taxpayers millions of dollars every year. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between criminal thinking styles and self-reported recidivism, which included crimes committed that were not reported to authorities. According to Ellis' Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy theory, behavior is a direct result of cognitive activity. The research question asked what relationship existed between criminal thinking styles and recidivism for post-release non-violent offenders on probation. Using the Psychological Inventory of Criminal Thinking Styles, this study used a non-experimental survey approach, correlating scores from this measure …
Examining The Intersection Of Gender And Age In Victim Blaming, Jerin Lee
Examining The Intersection Of Gender And Age In Victim Blaming, Jerin Lee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Victim blaming refers to an attributional tendency in which some level of responsibility for a negative outcome is placed on victims (Maes, 1994). Many victims of crimes face stigmatization in the form of blame from friends, acquaintances, the criminal justice system, media, strangers, and even perpetrators of the crimes themselves (e.g., Cross, Parker, & Sansom, 2019; Gordon & Riger, 1991). Victim characteristics, type of crime, and observer characteristics all influence victim blaming tendencies. However, no studies to date have tested whether these factors in combination elicit differential reactions to victims of crimes. The present research tested how the intersection of …
Spotting A Criminal: Examining Perceived Racial Typicality In Violent And Nonviolent Crimes, Krystia Grembocki
Spotting A Criminal: Examining Perceived Racial Typicality In Violent And Nonviolent Crimes, Krystia Grembocki
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
As humans, we rely on our eyes to help us understand the world around us. While this seems like the ultimate asset, it is also detrimental because our eyes are often deceiving. Specifically, when we use visual information to draw conclusions about other people, our perceptions are shaped by what we see, and sometimes such information is misleading and inaccurate. The present study's purpose is to identify how visual information (i.e. race) influences our judgement of criminals who have committed violent and non-violent felony crimes. Participants were shown lineups containing headshots of four male criminals, which varied in race (i.e. …

A Study Of Old Dominion Student Opinions On Crimes Committed With Firearms By Convicted Felons, William Domebnick Euefueno
OTS Master's Level Projects & Papers
The problem of this study was to determine college student’s opinions regarding crimes committed by convicted felons with the use of firearms. This study was undertaken to determine if students support more aggressive legislation regarding the purchasing of firearms, specifically targeting convicted felons, to further prevent them obtaining weapons.
In identifying the methods to be used to obtain data for the study, the researcher reviewed the current laws pertaining to owning and possessing firearms, as well as national gun violence statistics for the past decade. This was broken down further by looking at criminal activity, and gun violence reported from …
Crime And Punishment And Education, Christopher R. Bollinger, Bethany L. Paris
Crime And Punishment And Education, Christopher R. Bollinger, Bethany L. Paris
Issue Brief on Topics Affecting Kentucky’s Economy
Crime impacts the lives of Kentuckians in myriad ways. It has direct costs to victims and indirect costs through property values and business activity. Citizens and policymakers alike desire to reduce and limit crime. In this brief, we investigate the link between crime rates in Kentucky’s counties and the aggregate level of education. Perhaps surprisingly, higher education, and specifically the percent of the population with a Bachelor’s degree, is associated with lower crime. We find that increasing educational attainment in Kentucky to the U.S. levels could reduce the costs of crime by over $3 million annually.
Motion Pictures As An Agent Of Socialization: A Comparative Content Analysis Of Demography Of Population On Indian Silver Screen And Reported Crime News In Pakistan (1976 To 2006), Erum Hafeez Aslam
Business Review
This study aims to examine and analyze role of motion pictures as an agent of socialization. It focuses the contribution of Indian movies to the increase of violent crimes and criminals in Pakistani society across the four decades (i.e. 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s) through favorable rather glamorized depiction of violence and perpetrators of violence. It is arbitrarily assumed that violence is often projected on silver screen as a quick and easy solution to social injustice and class discrimination in the blockbusters of Bollywood and Lollywood. Five top grossing Indian films selected through popularity charts and youth polls are thus …

The aim of this study is to identify the life conditions of adolescent subjects accused of having committed robbery and crimes against health, from a psychosocial perspective. A tally of 122 dossiers were studied, from which 50% were male and female adolescents accused of crimes against health, and the other 50%, for robbery. Seventy per cent of males and 68.2% of females had consumed a type of drugs, 66% of the total of the sample showed little tolerance to frustration, 60% had an inadequate handling of affectivity, with a significant difference when studied for every type of crime. Among the …

Gaza Weapons Use Prior to the January ceasefires, Amnesty International sent a team of independent observers into Gaza in order to investigate allegations of war crimes during the conflict on the part of Hamas and the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF). The Amnesty group were among the first independent observers to gain access to Gaza during the closing stages of the conflict. Their report, which has been seen by Dr. Tom Clonan contains disturbing evidence of the abuse of international law by all parties to the conflict.

Neighborhood Crime And Travel Behavior: An Investigation Of The Influence Of Neighborhood Crime Rates On Mode Choice, Mti Report 07-02, Christopher E. Ferrell, Shishir Mathur, Emilia Mendoza
Mineta Transportation Institute
While much attention has been given to the influence of urban form on travel behavior in recent years, little work has been done on how neighborhood crimes affect this dynamic. This research project studied seven San Francisco Bay Area cities, and found substantiation for the proposition that neighborhood crime rates have an influence on the propensity to choose non-automotive modes of transportation for home-based trips. Specifically, high vice and vagrancy crime rates were associated with a lowered probability of choosing transit in suburban cities for both work and non-work trips, high property crime rates were associated with a lower probability …
