A Situation Of The Crimeans Diocese Of The Orthodox Church Of Ukraine In Russian Occupied Crimea (2014-2022), Andrii Ivanets, Iryna Krasnodemska
A Situation Of The Crimeans Diocese Of The Orthodox Church Of Ukraine In Russian Occupied Crimea (2014-2022), Andrii Ivanets, Iryna Krasnodemska
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article is devoted to the situation regarding the Crimean Diocese of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine after the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation. It should be noted that Orthodoxy and Islam are the most common religions on the peninsula. The Crimean Diocese of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine is the largest and most prominent among the Crimean religious organizations. The authors highlight Russia's consistent discriminatory policy toward the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Kyiv Patriarchate/the Orthodox Church of Ukraine on the temporarily occupied peninsula, which is aimed at their gradual but rigorous expulsion from Crimea. The methods of its implementation …

Dysfunctional Warfare: The Russian Invasion Of Ukraine, Rob Johnson
Dysfunctional Warfare: The Russian Invasion Of Ukraine, Rob Johnson
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was based on false premises, faulty assumptions, and a weak strategy. As the conflict has unfolded, heavy losses have imposed a strain on available Russian manpower. The Russian army reached a culminating point outside Kyiv and has exhibited little sign of operational learning. By contrast, Ukrainians have fought an existential war, making good use of dispersed light infantry tactics with high motivation levels. Western support has allowed them to compensate for their deficiencies in armaments and munitions. This commentary also shows military and policy leaders how the political context continues to impose limitations on the Ukrainians.

How Hydrocarbon Resources And Vladimir Putin's Acquaintances Are Linked To Russia's Foreign Policy Decisions, Anttoni Asikainen
How Hydrocarbon Resources And Vladimir Putin's Acquaintances Are Linked To Russia's Foreign Policy Decisions, Anttoni Asikainen
Honors Theses
This thesis examines how Russia uses its hydrocarbon resources as a foreign policy tool. As one of the most significant gas and oil producers in the world, Russia has gained enormous political power in many nations. In short, for many years, Russia has been building asymmetrical economic relationships with multiple countries, including countries in the European Union. Many of these countries have become partially or entirely dependent on Russian energy. It is true that financially, Russia profits enormously from hydrocarbon exports, but scholars also agree that for Russia, gaining political power by selling hydrocarbon resources is just as important. Another …
The Consequences Of Annexation On Financial Markets, Kristina Khederlarian
The Consequences Of Annexation On Financial Markets, Kristina Khederlarian
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The objective of this study will be to understand the consequences of annexation through a lens that is political and financial. The scope of research will include the three prominent cases of annexation by major powers over the past twenty years. This lends itself to three case studies: Crimea, Kashmir and Hong Kong. We will be selecting these three cases, since those were three that involved annexation by a major power over the past twenty years. Although our study is reserved to those three cases, we will briefly review historic cases of annexation in the literature review section because it …
Crisis In Crimea: A Case Study In Geopolitics, Jesse Clarke
Crisis In Crimea: A Case Study In Geopolitics, Jesse Clarke
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This research project conducts an analysis of the current situation in Crimea and attempts to contribute to the literature around a possible solution. Done so with the help of geopolitical analysis, the history of the region of Crimea is examined in-depth in an attempt to shed light on strategies for a resolution and provide background information. Geopolitical analysis as a form of study is then briefly explained and its relevancy for looking at global events and predicting outcomes explained. Next, three possible strategies for a solution are then presented and their viability analyzed through a geopolitical lens. These three strategies …

State repressions of minority groups threaten human rights, undermining their development and survival. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, countless minority groups found themselves living in a new country as a result of annexation, redefined territorial boundaries and migration, with some suffering repression from the states in which they now resided. This thesis examines the interactions and conditions necessary for such repressions from the state to take place with the central research question: why and how might a state, having just acquired an ethnic or minority group, repress the said group following its acquisition. Through the combination of Benedict …

Modern Irredentism Or Cloaked Imperialism? Hidden Agendas And Hybrid Warfare In Reinstating The Russkiy Mir, Kayla L. Gruber
Politics, Philosophy, and Legal Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
The partition of post-Soviet Union territory ignited numerous border disputes, ethnicrelated human rights concerns, and security dilemmas; these issues have intensified in the last twenty years, provoked by Russia’s rising power in the international system. The argument is that, despite citing abuses on ethnic kin as the reason for invading the Crimean peninsula, the decision to invade Crimea was a systematic effort to settle post-USSR grievances and rebuild a stronger, hegemonic Russian Federation. By reviewing motivations for Russia’s annexation of the Crimean peninsula—and integrating subsequent action in the Middle East, the United States, the Balkans, and Israel—findings from this research …
The Beast To The East: Norway's Russia-Policy After Crimea - Status Quo Or A Shift In Policy?, Johannes Sandberg
The Beast To The East: Norway's Russia-Policy After Crimea - Status Quo Or A Shift In Policy?, Johannes Sandberg
Selected Full-Text Master Theses Collection 2018-
This research examines Norway’s Russia-policy following the Russian annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and the aggression in East Ukraine. The research identifies attributes of Norway’s Russia-policy before and after Crimea and applies realist and liberal international relations theory to the discussion on whether Norway’s policy doctrine has changed. The main conclusion is that there has been a shift in Norway’s Russia-policy in the aftermath of Crimea from a liberal approach to realist foreign policy doctrine, but that Norway retain some emphasis on preserving normalized bilateral relations and cooperation.
Nationalism, Soft Annexation And Hybrid Warfare: Putin's Recipe For Russian Resurgence, Brian E. Szlenk Straub
Nationalism, Soft Annexation And Hybrid Warfare: Putin's Recipe For Russian Resurgence, Brian E. Szlenk Straub
Dissertations and Theses
Over the last decades since the fall of the Soviet Union, The Russian Federation has struggled to reclaim its grasp over Eastern Europe and re-establish itself as a major player on the international scene. Increased NATO expansion towards its borders, and the “Westernization” of Eastern Europe has led to the country feeling it has been boxed into a corner. The feeling that the Russian nation has been encroached upon by the Western world has led to the rise of Vladimir Putin as President of Russia, and the marked rise in nationalism within the country. In this Master’s Thesis, I intend …
The Legality And Illegality Of Russian Hegemony In Ukraine, Benedikt Munzar
The Legality And Illegality Of Russian Hegemony In Ukraine, Benedikt Munzar
Global Tides
The recent Russian annexation of Ukraine and the Russian support of rebels in southeastern Ukraine has been met with fierce international condemnation. In light of its violation of multiple international laws and agreements, Russia has argued that it’s acting merely to support the interests of Russian minorities abroad. Given Russia’s intimate history with Ukraine and recent questionable actions from Ukraine towards its Russian minority, the facts leading up to this standoff may provide some justification for Russia’s stance as well as criticism towards Ukrainian policies and Western interference in the Ukrainian referendum. Despite this discrepancy, Russia is still liable for …

Genocide's Aftermath: Neostalinism In Contemporary Crimea, Greta Uehling
Genocide's Aftermath: Neostalinism In Contemporary Crimea, Greta Uehling
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
The Crimean Tatars’ genocide is one of the clearest, and yet least studied of twentieth-century genocides. This article explores that genocide’s aftermath, beginning with the Crimean Tatars’ attempts to reinscribe their presence in their historic homeland following the 1944 deportation. The ongoing contestations over the past are examined here as a historical habitus informing attitudes and behavior in the present. Drawing on unparalleled interview data with the Russian-speaking population in Crimea, I explore the durability and ontological resonance of constructions of Tatars as traitors both past and present. Ethnographic insight into the local understandings that feed exclusion, discrimination, and hatred …
A Double Dispossession: The Crimean Tatars After Russia’S Ukrainian War, Stephen Blank
A Double Dispossession: The Crimean Tatars After Russia’S Ukrainian War, Stephen Blank
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Genocide and genocidal political processes have been used by the Russian state for decades—if not centuries—as a technique of self-colonial rule intended to eliminate “dissident” ethnic identities. Within this context, the historical fate of the Crimean Tatars is surely a unique one. Despite Soviet obstructions, the Crimean Tatars eventually returned to their homeland in Crimea after suffering forced deportations and genocide at the hands of the Soviet government. Now, 70 years after their deportation and genocide by Stalin, the Crimean Tatars are still fighting for justice. Defined as an autonomous group in their own land under the Ukrainian government, the …
