Women Physicians And Medical Conferences: A Pilot Survey Study Of Participation Challenges And Options To Optimize Wellness And Work-Life Integration, Marah N. Kays, Ekas Singh Abrol, Ariela L. Marshall
Journal of Wellness
Introduction: Women physicians experience challenges in career advancement, work-life integration (WLI), and wellness. Participation (attending and speaking) at academic conferences is one way for women physicians to advance their careers, but barriers to physical participation (travel, WLI) pose challenges. Virtual participation options may enhance career advancement. In this pilot study, we explored women physicians’ conference participation patterns and preferences regarding virtual participation options.
Methods: In this cross-sectional pilot study of 70 women physicians from the Physician Women in Leadership (PWL) and Physician Moms Group (PMG) Facebook groups, we collected demographic, burnout, and WLI data, information on barriers to …

While grappling with gaining education and experience to enter into a career in music libraries, students may find attendance at an MLA meeting to be particularly beneficial. Going to an MLA meeting as a student is a fantastic experience that facilitates a better understanding of the profession and creates the opportunity to make connections that can lead to greater success when entering a career in music libraries. From plenary presentations to informal gatherings, there are numerous opportunities to immerse yourself and learn about salient topics in music library work while also meeting potential collaborators, mentors, and future colleagues. Discrimination Among College Football Head Coaches, Yusuke Fukuda
Discrimination Among College Football Head Coaches, Yusuke Fukuda
Honors Theses
Several major sports organizations have come under scrutiny in recent years for alleged discriminatory practices towards minority coaches. In this paper, I analyze whether minority college football head coaches are more likely to be fired and to earn a lower salary. I observe a sample of 300 head coaches from 132 Division-I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools between the years 2006 to 2021. After controlling for performance and experience variables and holding the time and school or conference variables fixed in a Cox hazard regression model, I find statistically significant evidence that minority coaches face a higher likelihood of being …

Going Beyond The Ir: Using Content-Specific Platforms And Targeted Outreach To Provide Integrated Access To A Medical School’S Education Scholarship, Brandon T. Pieczko, Hannah J. Craven
Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)
To increase local contributions to medical education scholarship, a medical school began hosting an annual school-wide conference in 2020. Two librarians worked proactively with conference organizers to preserve and provide access to presentation materials and session recordings. This targeted outreach became more effective in the second year as students and faculty were invited on the conference submission form to express interest in contributing materials to the university’s institutional repository. The librarians were able to use this list of interested participants to obtain permissions, additional information, and address potential questions rather than relying on a post-hoc solicitation of conference materials. Workflow …

Riding The Wave: Getting Faculty On Board With The Ir During The Pandemic, Jennifer M. Langford, Randall Watts
Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)
The emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic initially caused widespread academic conference cancellations, leaving many University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) faculty members without a means to present scholarship required for the annual review process. Faculty members concerned about meeting their scholarship requirements appealed to campus administration for assistance. UTHSC’s Health Sciences Library (HSL) was able to step in and offer the library-managed UTHSC Digital Commons repository as a solution to this dilemma. The urgency of faculty concerns, combined with positive messaging about Digital Commons coming from campus administration, increased campus interest in the repository. Ultimately, as conferences transitioned to …

Creating The Entrepreneurship & Libraries Conference 2020: A Collaboration Of Public, Special, And Academic Librarians, Vendors, And Economic Development Stakeholders, Morgan Ritchie-Baum, Sara M. Thynne, Steven M. Cramer
Collaborative Librarianship
Despite the increasing importance to libraries of supporting entrepreneurship and economic development, professional development opportunities on those topics have been rare. Also rare are opportunities for public, special, and academic librarians plus other types of professionals to collaborate on major professional development events like a multi-day conference. The authors and a diverse planning group worked to challenge that status quo by creating the Entrepreneurship & Libraries Conference (ELC) 2020. After making a COVID-19-mandated pivot to an online format, this conference featured speakers, networking hours, a discussion room hour, and a pitch competition with cash prizes for libraries proposing economic development …

It hardly needs to be said that 2020 was a difficult year for the world. COVID-19 has infected over 120 million people and killed over 2 million as of March 2021 (Johns Hopkins). At the same time, police violence against people of color continues, even as communities engage in long-overdue reckoning initiatives. Across the globe, researchers, governments, and communities needed quick, open, up-to-date information on testing for, treating, and preventing COVID-19. Our increased dependence on technology during lockdowns provided some with safety and continuity, while others experienced the widening of the digital divide. There is no greater urgency than the …

Indian And Chinese Oncologists’ Asco Conference-Based Derivative Articles: A Comparative Study, Jagdish Sharma Mr.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Introduction:
Conference-based derivative article is a welcome step in medical fraternity because it overcomes limited peer review, enhances validation of the results, avoids duplication and reduces publication bias to some extent. Further, such work helps in the furthering visibility, archival and accessibility issues of the content. With this background the scope of the present work is restricted to comparing oncology publication output of India and China in terms of derivative articles based on American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) conference papers.
Objectives:
The significance of the present study lies in the fact that it aims to compare the conversion rate …

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)
It's not easy to change career paths, but it is something that teachers often consider after working in one field for many years. This can mean a return to study, but as Adult Education experts have noted, older learners usually face some specific barriers in returning to school that younger learners do not, and sometimes these barriers prevent them from trying. And if you are a mother, like I am, even going to a conference can be difficult. This is my story of the challenges I faced in returning to study, and of the people who helped me to overcome …

Review Of The Rare Books And Manuscripts Section 2019 Conference, Elizabeth Hobart
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
The 2019 conference of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) took a broad look at climate change and special collections. Topics covered included climatological shifts, the environmental impacts of collecting and maintaining collections, and the roles archives have played in researching and documenting climate change. This conference succeeded in advancing crucial conversations about anthropogenic climate change and special collections, including strategies for mitigation, responding to climate disasters, and ensuring long-term availability of library materials.

Exploring The Questionable Academic Practice Of Conference Paper Double Dipping, Krista B. Lewellyn, William Q. Judge, Adam Smith
Exploring The Questionable Academic Practice Of Conference Paper Double Dipping, Krista B. Lewellyn, William Q. Judge, Adam Smith
Management Faculty Publications
We develop a conceptual framework and provide empirical evidence that helps to explain why management scholars submit the same paper to more than one scholarly conference, a practice referred to as "double dipping." Drawing from general strain theory,we find that certain features of the social and national institutional context in which these scholars are embedded provides motivation for and facilitates rationalization of engagement in the double-dipping practice. Specifically, our results show that the incidence of conference paper double dipping is greater for junior scholars and for those currently affiliated with research-intensive universities. We also find that authors who received their …

The JET Library kicked off 2017 with an always well-received event, our annual “Beat the Blahs” Party, sponsored by the Office of the President. This year, we featured a dessert table where members of the Molloy Community brought in their favorite desserts to share with everyone. We also held our first JET Bake-off, with Karen Cusumano, Executive Assistant in the President’s Office, being awarded a “Certificate in Excellence in Baking” with her “Classic Sour Cream Cheese Cake.” Requests have been received by the library asking if she will share her recipe! Although we definitely did enjoy a delicious feast, I …
