Journal of Public Management & Social Policy

This study examines the role of community-based nonprofit organizations in neighborhood revitalization/community development and their impact on the level of housing services. The neighborhoods in the study represent certain universalities of gentrification in older communities, and therefore selected for the study. By going beyond the profitability of gentrification, this study examines the social costs associated with gentrification through the lens of nonprofit organizations using quantitative data from Baltimore, Maryland and Houston, Texas. Taking into account nonprofit organizations as important actors in the gentrification field, this study contributes to the understanding of the social cost of gentrification and how community-based nonprofit …

Cost-A-Lot Of Evictions And Displacement: Meda's Role In Community Organizing And The Impacts Of The Costa-Hawkins And Ellis Acts, Henna Gandhi

Master's Theses

In February 1995, the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act (AB1164) was passed in California. Developed by two Democratic state policymakers, Senator Jim Costa and Assemblymember Phil Hawkins, the act encompassed both Senate Bill 1257 and Assembly Bill 1169 (Goldberg 2, 2018). The Costa-Hawkins Act was a vacancy decontrol legislation that overruled strict rent control measures in cities across California. In combination with rent control and Costa-Hawkins, the passage of the Ellis Act (1985) by state legislators further contributed to the affordable housing crisis. With the current affordable housing crisis, I turn to community- based organizations (CBOs) who provide housing solutions for …

Unearthing Leadership: A Leadership Development Curriculum To Equip Individuals For The Flourishing Of Vulnerable Communities, Eric C. Basye

Doctor of Leadership

Through the research process, the identified NPO was that vulnerable communities have the opportunity to flourish when individuals experience healthy, holistic relationships. The critical insights gained from the research process were that healthy relationships are essential for any individual or community to flourish, there is a notable element of hope and whole-life transformation when individuals from vulnerable communities experience healthy relationships, and those who have suffered trauma can overcome challenging circumstances and thrive. For over twenty years, I have lived and worked in low-income neighborhoods as a neighbor, church planter, and nonprofit leader to seek the flourishing of the community …

Rebuilding The Appalachian Economy From The Ground Up: Towards A Holistic Organizational Framework For Community And Economic Development In Rural Extractive Areas, Brandon M. Dennison Jan 2023

Rebuilding The Appalachian Economy From The Ground Up: Towards A Holistic Organizational Framework For Community And Economic Development In Rural Extractive Areas, Brandon M. Dennison

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Central Appalachia specifically and rural extractive areas more generally face some of the most challenging socio-economic realities in North America. Community-based organizations (CBOs) are an important tool for addressing these challenges. As governments intensify efforts to mitigate climate change, and as fossil-fuel industries contract, extracted communities are experiencing economic, cultural, and environmental upheaval. Many leaders call for a “just transition” away from fossil-fuels, which would make local extraction communities whole. However, achieving a truly just transition away from fossil fuels is extraordinarily challenging, and many extracted communities were never whole to begin with. I argue CBOs are the crucial vehicle …

Reconciling Conflicting Institutional Logics: Community Reinvestment Officers At The Intersection Of Public Policy And Market Forces, Meredith Mckee Adkins Aug 2022

Reconciling Conflicting Institutional Logics: Community Reinvestment Officers At The Intersection Of Public Policy And Market Forces, Meredith Mckee Adkins

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although the public policy literature has traditionally focused on public sector agencies’ roles in the policy implementation process, private sector managers who oversee regulatory mandates for their organizations are also policy actors. These actors operate between multiple conflicting field-level institutional logics that create demands that they must reconcile through their work. In the banking sector, the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), enacted in 1977, and its associated policies are monitored by the banking regulatory agencies and implemented by the senior managers responsible for these mandates at regulated financial institutions. Simultaneously with their responsibility for the policy mission of the CRA, CRA …

The Use Of Comprehensive Planning In Barre And Bennington Revitalization Projects, Erica Nicole Rumball-Petre Jul 2022

The Use Of Comprehensive Planning In Barre And Bennington Revitalization Projects, Erica Nicole Rumball-Petre

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to describe the economic, physical, social, and stakeholder engagement strategies used during revitalization projects in Barre and Bennington, Vermont. Revitalization projects are used to reinvigorate communities whose economies, infrastructure, and quality of life have deteriorated (Morckel, 2014). Revitalization projects differ significantly from community to community. However, the literature asserts that city planners and engaged citizens must address the same critical components if the revitalization project is to have a lasting impact (Morckel, 2014, Rupp et al., 2019). The use of economic, physical, social, and stakeholder engagement strategies is termed “comprehensive planning.” Planners …

The Journal of Extension

Extension is uniquely positioned to deliver data-driven solutions to complex community issues with University applied research, particularly through crises like COVID-19. Applying the Policy, Systems and Environmental (PSE) framework to community development is an effective, innovative approach in guiding Extension leaders to create, document, and share long-term transformative change on challenging issues with stakeholders. Beyond the public health sector, applying a PSE approach to community development provides leverage points for population-level benefits across sectors. This article describes current public health approaches, methodologies, and how the PSE framework translates to other programs with four examples of high-impact, systems level Extension projects.

Older Adults Home-Based Care In Cairo: Asset Mapping Towards Community Development, Yomna El-Taweel Apr 2022

Older Adults Home-Based Care In Cairo: Asset Mapping Towards Community Development, Yomna El-Taweel

Theses and Dissertations

The health and economic consequences of the rapid growth of the older adults’ population above 60 have led to new and more flexible forms of care, including home-based care. In Cairo, Egypt, there seems to be a high demand and preference for home-based care services over other care services like nursing homes. From a policy makers’ perspective, older adults’ needs are sometimes approached in a deficit-oriented way. This might contribute to the disempowerment of older adults and make them feel like people with needs that can only be met by external support. This mixed-method study aimed to contribute to the …

Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge and application gaps exist for women farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa who are key agricultural players for economic growth and food security. This study examined capacity development for Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) measures and empowerment of women farmers considering Rappaport (1984) and Zimmerman’s (1995, 2000) lenses of empowerment theory. The central research question was, how does capacity development for sanitary and phytosanitary measures empower women at the individual, organizational, and community levels in Sub-Saharan Africa? The study employed an embedded mixed methods design collecting data via an electronic survey from 23 Sub-Saharan women farmers; 22 from Ghana and one from …

Gentrification, Amie Thurber, Amy Krings Nov 2021

Gentrification, Amie Thurber, Amy Krings

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Gentrification can be understood as the process through which geographical areas become increasingly exclusive, which disproportionately harms people living in poverty and people of color, as well as the elderly, families, and youth. As such, this article argues that macro social work practitioners should view gentrification as a key concern. Thus, to help guide macro interventions, the article begins by first defining gentrification and describing ways to measure it, while emphasizing its difference from revitalization. Second, the article explores causes of gentrification, including its relationship to systemic racism. Third, the article explores the consequences of gentrification on individuals’ and communities’ …

Creating A Culture Change: Sector Trainings For Dementia Friendly Communities For East Central Illinois Area Agency On Aging, Genesis Marie Buendia Aug 2021

Creating A Culture Change: Sector Trainings For Dementia Friendly Communities For East Central Illinois Area Agency On Aging, Genesis Marie Buendia

Stevenson Center for Community and Economic Development—Student Research

Regarding dementia, the public usually does not have a clear understanding of what it is and what it entails. People use it interchangeably with Alzheimer’s, which is not the same; and people fear it as it is part of the aging process, which is understandable but not true. Both of these misconceptions and more can be countered by implementing a dementia-friendly community (DFC). DFCs are cities that bring together different sectors (banks, hospitals, libraries, etc.) to create a cohesive network of resources, with their employees trained to interact with and bring awareness to persons with dementia (PWDs). During my practicum …

Perceptions Of Future Community And Individual Well-Being In Rural Nebraska, Amanda L. Kowalewski Aug 2021

Perceptions Of Future Community And Individual Well-Being In Rural Nebraska, Amanda L. Kowalewski

Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Populations of rural areas continue to decline, yet some communities are more vibrant than ever. While past research has studied current satisfaction or well-being, few have examined future well-being. Using an ordinal logistic regression and combining primary and secondary data sources, this study investigates the predictors of rural Nebraskan’s sense of future well-being, both at the community and individual levels. The model indicates that resilience may be more important in well-being than social capital. Additionally, certain satisfaction indicators are more important than others. Factor analysis was employed to re-index variables, and findings were similar. Social capital, resilience, and quality of …

Neoliberalism, Civic Identity, And Resistance: An Ethnographic Case Study Of A Community Development Organization, Erin Layne Elliott

Dissertations and Theses

Research on the marketization of the nonprofit sector and how it has come to operate in more business-like ways has been well documented in recent years. This research has largely focused on how marketization has pervaded the nonprofit sector, yet little research has been done on how business-like values and modes of acting are manifesting in nonprofits. Even less understood are the impacts marketization may have on foundational civic values in the nonprofit sector. As marketized discourses proliferate, concerns have been raised about threats to nonprofit autonomy and the sector's important civic role. This dissertation aims to fill this gap …

Environmental Justice Organizing In A Gentrifying Community: Navigating Dilemmas Of Representation, Issue Selection, And Recruitment, Amy Krings, Colette Copic Nov 2020

Environmental Justice Organizing In A Gentrifying Community: Navigating Dilemmas Of Representation, Issue Selection, And Recruitment, Amy Krings, Colette Copic

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Environmental justice organizations aim to secure an equitable distribution of environmental resources through the participation and self-determination of affected people, particularly communities of color. Yet organizing in a market economy is complicated: As communities become greener, gentrification can follow, thereby inadvertently displacing low-income communities of color and reproducing environmental injustices. This study informs antiracist community practice methods by examining strategic and ethical dilemmas embedded within an environmental justice organization that is located in a gentrifying Mexican American neighborhood in Chicago. Drawing from interviews, we examine members’ perceptions relating to representation, recruitment, and issue selection. We reveal key considerations for community …

The Development And Validation Of A Personal Agency Scale Based In The Community Capitals Framework, Abigail Borron, Kevan W. Lamm, Keith Atkins

Journal of International Agricultural and Extension Education

Used in a variety of community contexts and needs, the Community Capitals Framework (CCF) is an analytical tool to holistically examine the complex and unique characteristics that exist at the local level. While CCF—which focuses on social, human, cultural, political, natural, financial, and built capitals—has been used to collect community information to identify and assess suitable programming efforts, a gap currently exists in the literature providing agricultural and extension educators with the tools necessary to examine CCF characteristics, both at the community and individual levels. Designed as a pilot study targeting six counties in [STATE], this research developed a personal …
