Extensive polydrug use puts nightclub attendees at high risk for health problems, including HIV/ STI; mental distress; and drug dependence.
There is pervasive resistance to participation in formal interventions. Club scene participants tend to be suspicious of or disinterested in drug use and sexual risk prevention messages delivered by governmental or health authorities.
Efficacious interventions to reduce sexual risk, drug use, and related consequences for this population are not apparent in the literature.

Adolescent males are at relatively high risk of developing mental health disorders and show low rates of help seeking when mental health disorders arise. Parents are the primary source of support for adolescents and therefore have an important role in mental health promotion and prevention of mental health disorders. The aim of this study was to examine the perceptions of adolescent males' parents on the potential role of community sport clubs in adolescent mental health promotion. This work examines a type of war club unique to South America and to the area of the three Guianas. The so-called block war club of the Guianas, often noted in the memoirs of explorers and soldiers in the New World, has received little academic attention. Mining firsthand accounts and what little academic attention has been focused on the clubs, this paper examines a set of clubs from the Heye Foundation Collection now housed in the National Museum of the American Indian.
