Development Of A Qgis Plugin To Dasymetric Mapping, Nelson Mileu, Margarida Queirós
Development Of A Qgis Plugin To Dasymetric Mapping, Nelson Mileu, Margarida Queirós
Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) Conference Proceedings
Demographic data is usually represented by choropleth map, where the statistical data is aggregated to areal units. This type of representation has several limitations associated with spatial analysis and distribution. A common alternative to display statistical data in meaningful spatial zones is the dasymetric mapping technique. Though dasymetric mapping has existed for many decades, the open source GIS tools to explore dasymetric mapping methods are scarce. In this paper, a Geographical Information System (GIS) open source application was developed in QGIS software that applies the dasymetric mapping method to the Portuguese Guimarães municipality 2011 Census block-group populations and using Corine …
The Homeless Of Massachusetts: An Analysis Of The 1990 U.S. Census S-Night Data, Christopher G. Hudson
The Homeless Of Massachusetts: An Analysis Of The 1990 U.S. Census S-Night Data, Christopher G. Hudson
Christopher Hudson
This article, which examines epidemiological and policy correlates of homeless populations in 351 Massachusetts towns and cities, is based on an analysis of data from the 1990 U.S. census. It reviews the reliability of the most recent census data, reports findings on the distribution and characteristics of homeless persons in Massachusetts, and presents preliminary correlational findings on the impact of key demographic conditions and policies.
The report includes a meta-analysis of several studies that monitored the Census Bureaus street counts. It is estimated that 42.6 percent of the homeless on the streets in selected urban areas were counted by the …

Sprague Library Scholarship and Creative Works
The purpose of this poster is to demonstrate the ways that current and historical data from the Educational Attainment in the United States: 2015 report may be used to project trends in demographics and social characteristics of adults to focus recruitment efforts on students who are more likely to graduate.

Introduction To Gis Using Open Source Software, 7th Ed, Frank Donnelly
Open Educational Resources
This tutorial was created to accompany the GIS Practicum, a day-long workshop offered by the Newman Library at Baruch College CUNY that introduces participants to geographic information systems (GIS) using the open source software QGIS. The practicum introduces GIS as a concept for envisioning information and as a tool for conducting geographic analyses and creating maps. Participants learn how to navigate a GIS interface, how to prepare layers and conduct a basic geographic analysis, and how to create thematic maps. This tutorial was written using QGIS version 2.14 "Essen", a cross-platform (Windows, Mac, Linux) desktop GIS software package.
Demographic Data Relating To Deprivation And Inclusion For The Eight Cypsc Regions In Kerry, Denise O'Leary
Demographic Data Relating To Deprivation And Inclusion For The Eight Cypsc Regions In Kerry, Denise O'Leary
Reports / Surveys
This document provides population and household data relating to deprivation for the eight CYPSC areas in Kerry. All data are from the 2011 Census, which means that the figures are not current. However these data were chosen because their availability at appropriate geographic level (District Electoral Division), allowing aggregation into Children and Young People Services Committee regions as other, more recent, data is not available at this level of geographical detail. The data can be updated in approximately 18 months using figures from the 2016 census.1 The following information is provided in the report for each of the eight CYPSC …

Introduction And Background - Poverty In Metropolitan Richmond, John V. Moeser
Poverty in Metropolitan Richmond
For almost ten years, Dr. John Moeser, Senior Fellow of the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement, has been analyzing U.S. Census data to track poverty trends among the localities of metropolitan Richmond. He started this project to inform the public about the growth of impoverishment and its effect on every aspect of urban life. As word began to circulate about the study, Dr. Moeser was invited by public officials, business executives, heads of non-profit organizations, leaders in the faith community, and neighborhood-based associations to speak and lead discussions about poverty including the history associated with the concentration of poverty and …

A Model For Identifying Gentrification In East Nashville, Tennessee, William Jordan Miller
A Model For Identifying Gentrification In East Nashville, Tennessee, William Jordan Miller
Theses and Dissertations--Geography
Gentrification methodologies rarely intersect. Analysis of the process has been cornered to incorporate either in-depth, neighborhood case studies or large-scale empirical investigations. Understanding the timing and extent of gentrification has been limited by this dichotomy. This research attempts to fuse quantitative and qualitative methods to discern the impact of gentrification between census tracts in East Nashville, Tennessee. By employing archival research, field surveys, and census data analysis this project attempts to comprehend the conditions suitable for gentrification to occur and its subsequent effect on residents and the built environment. A model was generated to determine the relationship between a-priori knowledge …
Dissemination And Geovisualization Of Territorial Entities' History, Christine Plumejeaud, Eric Grosso, Benjamin Parent
Dissemination And Geovisualization Of Territorial Entities' History, Christine Plumejeaud, Eric Grosso, Benjamin Parent
Journal of Spatial Information Science
This paper describes an innovative solution for geovisualization of the demographic and administrative history of French municipalities named "communes" in French. This solution allows for the open dissemination of such data. The challenge is to provide a web interface for unskilled users in order to help them understand complex information about the demographic evolution of French territories. Our approach combines interactive thematic spatial and temporal views. We describe our architecture based on open-source technologies and the organization of this imperfect geo-historical information in our spatiotemporal database. Our second contribution concerns the concept of an acquaintance graph that has been used …
