An archaeological survey was conducted of power line routes near Uvalde and Blewett in Uvalde and Kinney Counties, Texas, for the Rio Grande Electric Cooperative, Inc. Four prehistoric sites were found; however, only two sites (41 KY 22 and 41 KY 24) are recommended for testing to determine eligibility for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. The survey was conducted during January 1983, in accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, and Executive Order 11593.

In early 1983, an archaeological crew from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted a survey and testing program at site 41 OM 65 on the Valenzuela Ranch in Dimmit County, Texas. The results of the field work, analysis of artifacts recovered during restoration of a stone house on the site, and archival research in Dimmit, Webb, and Bexar Counties are reported. Conclusions are drawn as to the ranch's original and subsequent ownership, the approximate date of construction of the house, and its various uses through the years.

In June 1982, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio (CAR-UTSA), conducted an archaeological survey with subsurface testing at the proposed Dos Rios Wastewater Treatment Plant (previously called the Confluence site) located in Bexar County, Texas. The survey was performed for the City of San Antonio and was conducted under the administration of a joint venture of consulting engineers, acting as the city's representatives. Two archaeological sites (41 BX 124 and 41 BX 567) were examined. No further work is recommended for 41 BX 124. However, 41 BX 567 needs further investigation to determine eligibility …

This season included further architectural testing and stratigraphic excavations in a large trash pit located during season one, July 1980. An analysis of the 1982 field season activities at Rancho de las Cabras (41 WN 30) is presented in this report. Additional data concerning structural details and construction activities at the site are presented. The results of further archival research provide additional information concerning the history of the Rancho de las Cabras site, its relationship to Mission Espada, and the adjacent landowners. An expanded genealogy is presented of the Calvillo and Delgado families, both intimately connected to Rancho de las Cabras. Recommendations are made for further work at the site.

Cultural resources assessment and archaeological testing was conducted on the proposed Midland North Loop by the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) during the period October 4 through October 7, 1983, by a member of the SDHPT cultural resources staff and local SDHPT assistants. Construction activities during the replacement and upgrading of the State Highway 21 bridge over the Brazos River in Burleson County uncovered a previously unknown portion of archaeological Site 41BU16, the Reading Site, within the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) right-of-way.

Efforts by local concerned citizens resulted in the salvaging of one partially intact burial and the notification of the SDHPT cultural resources staff.

Evidence recovered during SDHPT testing indicates that the area was occupied over an extensive period of time from the Archaic Period to the Late Prehistoric Period. Also indicated is a late nineteenth and early …

Site 41CD56 is an aboriginal site located on Crier Creek in northwestern Colorado County, Texas. Testing in October, 1983, revealed that moderate amounts of thermally altered chert/quartzite and lithic debitage were contained in sandy deposits varying from 20 to 110 cm in depth. Two burned rock accumulations, possibly disturbed hearths, were discovered; but no diagnostic tools or indicators of cultural affiliation were found.

Four prehistoric sites occurring within a one mile stretch of FM 153, ten miles northwest of LaGrange, Texas, were investigated in November, 1983. These sites were evidenced by light scatters of burned rock and lithic debris on the surface. Excavation revealed shallow sandy loam deposits containing very small amounts of cultural material. The portion of these sites within the FM 153 right-of-way have no potential for further work.

Testing was undertaken in November 1982 of two sites on State Highway 6 between Hearne and Bryan in order to determine site depth, cultural context, and archaeological significance. Archaeological Site 41RT128 was typified by numerous bone fragments of Bos species, and Site 41RT129 was evidenced by a lithic scatter on a sandy hilltop on the south bank of Pin Oak Creek.

Testing indicated that Site 41RT128 was a late nineteenth century farm site and Site 41RT129 was a prehistoric lithic manufacturing site and possible campsite. Because of the depth and nature of these sites it was determined that no further …

Site 41KT32 is an open prehistoric campsite located on the Salt Fork of the Brazos River in Kent County, Texas. Test excavations revealed that the site is primarily outside of the proposed bridge replacement project area. Scattered burned rock was noted, and artifacts recovered indicate site habitation during the Late Archaic Period.

On the basis of the site's limited extent within the project and the lack of direct impact by the project on the primary portion of the site, no further investigation is being recommended.

Testing was to determine site depth, cultural context, and archaeological significance. Archaeological Site 41KR210 was typified by shallow deposits of cultural material which included lithic material and scattered burned rock.

Results of the test indicate that Site 41KR210 is of Archaic age and represents a limited manifestation of a lithic manufacturing station and campsite. The limited depth and nature of the site indicate that the site …

Because the area in the vicinity of the project is considered environmentally sensitive, very special construction specifications will be enforced during total implementation of the project. These specifications are designed to prohibit disruption of the natural environmental setting to the greatest degree possible. The Reading Site, 41BU16, is a prehistoric and historic site located in Burleson County, Texas, on the south terrace of the Brazos River at the crossing of State Highway 21. The site was first reported in 1972 but was not known to extend into the right-of-way of SH 21 until the clearing of heavy brush in the right-of-way in 1979 revealed its presence. Since that time the site has been known by local collectors, but the archaeology section of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) was not notified until August 25, 1983.

Excavations, in summer 1976, have provided new data on the ancient human occupations at Baker Cave, Val Verde County, Texas. One objective of the research program was to obtain further information on habitation at the site during Late Paleo-Indian times. Radiocarbon dates of 7000 B.C. can be linked to this period and are attributed to the Golondrina complex. This cultural pattern is represented by a deposit containing chipped stone artifacts and other cultural materials. The most important discovery was a cooking pit that yielded an abundance of faunal and floral remains. Interpretation of the paleoenvironmental data suggests a climatic regime …

In 1977-1978 excavations were conducted at 41 LK 67 in Live Oak County, south Texas, by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio. The investigation of this prehistoric archaeological site was part of an extensive program of reconnaissance and excavation necessitated by the construction of the Choke Canyon Reservoir on the Frio River by the Bureau of Reclamation.

The site is situated in shallow colluvial deposits capping an old terrace remnant of the Frio River. The excavations involved 193 m2 in three separate areas and revealed Late Prehistoric and Late Archaic components. Recognizably older artifacts …

The Eagle Hill II site (16SA50) is located in a rolling upland area of western Louisiana known as Peason Ridge. Because of its location in a saddle, the locale accumulated colluvial sediments during certain intervals of the late Quaternary; in addition, it served as a habitation area for prehistoric groups. Sediments were preserved from the early and late Holocene, apparently reflecting the relatively cooler and moister conditions of those periods that were conducive to erosion-preventing vegetation.
