During April 1990, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, under contract with the City of Uvalde, Texas, conducted a 100% pedestrian archaeological survey at the Uvalde Memorial Park. The area is located adjacent to the Leona River between East Nopal Street and the city golf course. U.S. Highway 90 West runs through the survey area.

In the Memorial Park area south of Highway 90, no cultural materials were observed on the surface. The survey area along the banks of the Leona River north of Highway 90 yielded a thin lithic scatter of prehistoric material. …

Site 41FB191 is a camp site dating to the Late Archaic/Early Ceramic time period northwest of Oyster Creek in Fort Bend County. The site was found by a member of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) cultural resources staff during a routine archaeological survey for the proposed Segment "D" of SH 99 (Grand Parkway). When it was first located, the site had just been plowed and a number of flakes and a biface tip were found on the surface. Archaeological testing of Site 41TT87 was performed during May and June of 1989 by the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT). These investigations were prompted by plans by Titus County and the SDHPT to replace three wooden bridges and reconstruct the County Road 211 roadway which crosses While Oak Creek bottom. Five 1 meter square test units were excavaled which produced a number of prehistoric ceramic sherds, chert flakes, and bifacial tools of which the Gary dart point type is dominant. No prehistoric features were found and the areas available for study all exhibited prior disturbance. Historic artifacts …

The Jodie Bender Site, 41HS11, is a prehistoric Caddoan settlement on Little Cypress Bayou in Harrison County, Texas. Personnel from the Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) tested the site in March and September 1989 as part of a bridge replacement project. The site is on a high terrace away from the bridge location, but the project includes cutting the terrace in order to meet current roadway specifications and will have a direct impact on site 41HS11.

Site 41KF118 was discovered during construction of improvements to SH 34 in Kaufman County and was tested in April 1990, to determine its eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Materials recovered as a result of test excavations suggest a Late Archaic occupation for that portion of the site within the right-of-way. Most of the site lies southeast of the highway right-of-way. Tests also showed the cultural deposits to be sparse and badly disturbed by previous land clearing operations and cultivation. No additional work is recommended at this site.

In May 1989, a team of archaeologist and volunteers from the Center for Archaeological Research performed a 100% survey and selective shovel testing on a tract of land intended for an expansion of Mission County Park. The survey and testing revealed that the area was either old river channel or under extensive spoil from the rechannelization of the San Antonio River. No archaeological or historical cultural resources were encountered.

No archaeological sites were identified during the project, and it is recommended that no further archaeological investigations are needed.

In March 1989, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted a subsurface testing program at two localities proposed for well drilling by the Edwards Underground Water District in New Braunfels, Texas. The testing was done to locate and evaluate any archaeological remains which might be affected by well drilling. Prehistoric archaeological remains were encountered at Well Locality 1, but Well Locality 2 was devoid of any cultural materials. On September 23, 1988, a cultural resources survey was conducted within the proposed boundaries of, Bandera City Park, Bandera County, Texas. The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, and the Texas Antiquities Code. As a result of a systematic pedestrian survey of the planned ISO-acre park, one prehistoric site (41 BN 94) was identified. Because of the extensive natural disturbance to the locale, no further work is recommended at site 41 BN 94. It is not considered potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places or as …

During August 1988, a cultural resources pedestrian survey was conducted within the West Salado Creek Outfall pipeline easement (two-mile long by 50-foot wide) in southeastern Bexar County, Texas. As a result of surface examination and limited subsurface shovel tests, one prehistoric site (41 BX 785) was recorded. Although some lithic debit age and burned rock fragments were found in the shovel tests at the prehistoric site, there was not enough information from the limited tests to determine if the site is intact. In July 1988, personnel from the Center for Archaeological Research at The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted monitoring of the construction of hand-dug trenches for installation of an air conditioning system in the church of Mission Concepcion. During the trenching for installation of electric lines one wall of the first convento was crossed. A small collection of artifacts taken from the backdirt of the trench is described, and the more unusual ones are illustrated.

In February 1988, the Center for Archaeological Research at The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted an archaeological survey and archival and historical research for the Stinson Municipal Airport in south Bexar County, Texas, under contract with TransPlan. No prehistoric or historic archaeological sites were found. However, a historic cemetery on the grounds of the airport was surveyed, and its approximate visible limits were recorded. It is recommended that further work be done to completely delineate the cemetery's boundaries before expansion of the airport is planned.

During October and November 1988, subsurface testing (Phase II) was conducted at prehistoric site 41 BX 785, found in the West Salado Creek Outfall pipeline easement during a pedestrian survey (Phase I) of the project area. The Phase II limited testing determined that the subsurface portion of the prehistoric site is essentially intact, and at least two stratified occupation levels were identified. Although the tests did not produce diagnostic (datable) cultural materials, there is a notable amount of stone tool debit age in the central area, some unidentified biface fragments and burned rock which probably represents displaced hearth stones. Test excavations were conducted in November 1987 by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio at the site of a planned relocation of the eastbound lanes of Martin Street in downtown San Antonio. The lots in question were located on the north side of the early town site, and were known to have contained the residence of Thaddeus Smith, the county clerk for Bexar County in the last half of the 19th century. The Mission Road Realignment Project proposes to relocate the current position of Mission Road, which transects the original Mission Concepcion quadrangle, farther west and in the vicinity of the road's 18th-century location. Archaeological testing conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research sought to determine if significant cultural resources would be adversely impacted by the road relocation project. Intensive testing established that no significant remains were located within or adjacent to the proposed right-of-way.

The Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) will replace the bridge on CR 439 (signed "County Road 129") over Brushy Creek in the south-central part of the county at Norman's Crossing (Figures 1 and 2). The new bridge will be built just east of the present bridge. The present bridge will continue to be used until the new bridge is completed, which eliminates the need for a temporary detour easement. Additional right-of-way will be obtained east of the county road in order to construct the new bridge and approaches.

Anthropological Studies

Traditional research into the Late Archaic period in the Southeastern United States has focused on matters related to subsistence and procurement, carried out under such paradigms as Cultural Ecology, Optimal Foraging Theory, and settlement/subsistence studies. The Landscape Archaeology approach is able to unify a number of these traditionally separate avenues of research into a holistic approach, while incorporating recent revisionist models such as Social Territories, Boundary/Center studies, and the dialectic between the physical/cultural landscape and individual perceptions of it. When the Landscape Archaeology approach is operationalized through Geographic Information Systems methodology, a truly powerful theory and method may be applied …

These investigations were sponsored by the Colorado River Municipal Water District in compliance with federal requirements for a construction permit from the Corps of Engineers. Approximately 1,690 acres were surveyed. and five previously unrecorded sites were discovered and documented.
