Household Archaeology And Reconstructing Social Organization In Ancient Complex Societies: A Consideration Of Models And Concepts Based On Study Of The Prehispanic Maya, Julia A. Hendon
Anthropology Faculty Publications
Studies of the settlement pattern in the Copan Valley, Honduras, indicate that a House society model provides the best way to understand the social organization of the Late Classic period Maya. The House society model, based on Levi-Strauss's original work but since modified by anthropologists and archaeologists, does not replace household archaeology. Instead, the model allows archaeologists to discuss the continuation of social identity over time.

Exploring 1670 Charles Towne: 38ch1a/B, Final Archaeology Report, Michael J. Stoner, Stanley South
Research Manuscript Series
The Charles Towne Archaeological Project of 2000/2001 was designed to discover evidence for the remains of the 1670 Charles Towne settlement. The investigation first used a sampling method called shovel testing to locate concentrations of seventeenth-century artifacts in the northernmost portion of the fortified area of the settlement. Once located, the project began to open a larger block of excavation in the vicinity of this concentration. This, the first of two excavation blocks, ultimately included 65 ten-foot squares and the excavation of hundreds of features. This strategy led to the discovery of an earthfast "lodging", which was bordered by a …

Radiocarbon Dating Of Architectural Mortar: A Case Study In The Maya Region, Quintana Roo, Mexico, Jennifer P. Mathews
Radiocarbon Dating Of Architectural Mortar: A Case Study In The Maya Region, Quintana Roo, Mexico, Jennifer P. Mathews
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research
The use of radiocarbon dating to analyze mortar and charcoal inclusions within mortar or plaster is a useful way to date the construction of architecture, particularly when options for other chronometric methods are limited. In the Yalahau region of northern Quintana Roo, Mexico, members of the Yalahau Regional Human Ecology Project have faced challenges in dating buildings made of large blocks of stone in the Megalithic architectural style. The Megalithic style poses serious problems for any analysis, as excavating into structures with stones weighing several tons can be dangerous, expensive, and time consuming. Additionally, there are no associated sculptures, texts …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The authors put on record archeological data obtained by Mr. Walters' late uncle Sam Whiteside from the Bryan Hardy site (41SM55) in Smith County, Texas. Mr. Whiteside was an active avocational archeologist in East Texas during the late 1950s and early 1960s, and he recorded numerous prehistoric sites on Prairie Creek and Ray Creek in Smith County, and the Jamestown (41SM54) and Boxed Springs (41UR30) mound sites on the Sabine River. An abrupt illness in mid-life prevented him from publishing his findings, and we hope that the publication of his investigations at the Bryan Hardy site will allow his work …

The Frequency Of Fire In East Texas Forests, David H. Jurney, John Ippolito, Velicia Bergstrom
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The debate over the use of fire by Native Americans has been a lively one for many years. Did they or did they not set fires? If they did, how frequently and for what purpose? If not, did they take advantage of naturally occurring fires for the same purposes? If so, how frequently and to what intensity did those natural fires occur? These seem like relatively simple questions that should elicit focused, directed research that would, in tum, produce straightforward answers. In some parts of North America, this has indeed been the case. Ethnographic documentation, corroborated by archaeological research, has …
